The 16th Century Jewish Synagogue and Ghetto, Split Croatia
The amount of Jewish history in the Balkans fascinated us. The Jewish community of Croatia dates back to at least the 3rd century A.D. Jews came to Split in the 7th century, welcomed by Emperor Diocletian. (He was probably too busy feeding Christians to the lions to notice.)
The Split Synagogue was built during the early 16th century by combining the second floors of two houses in the one-time Jewish Ghetto.
The woman who led us around is not Jewish but considers herself a professional Jew. We sped through the Synagogue tour because she had places to go, people to see. Nonetheless, thanks for taking her time.

Welcome to Split! We've heard so much about this little coastal town in Croatia that we knew we'd have to travel here soon. Fortunately grabbing a bus or train is easy via so we had a cheap and easy bus ride!
Split is definitely a beautiful place, the old streets have a lot of charm but it's got that coastal Croatian feel that you just can't avoid! Hopefully that comes across in this travel vlog anyway, it was Sep 2018 we visited.
Travel to Split seems really straight forward because of it's popularity and there is always a bus or boat coming and going! Getting in and out of the city is definitely straight forward and for the most part our journey from Zagreb To Split was painless.

When considering where to travel in Croatia it's natural that Split features on the list - its coastal, central and home for a lot of boats and tours... oh and its obviously beautiful. What about Trogir? Ever heard of it?
Trogir is a UNESCO World Heritage site and small town thats a great alternative to Split. It's a lot more chilled than Split, a small island only and has a distinctive old town feel to it.
Trogir cathedral, Fortress Kamerlengo Castle and the old town are the highlights - but the town has a small town feel with a big time charm. If you're considering where to go after Split or want some where to escape the pace for a little while definitely add Trogir to your list.

Dubrovnik Jewish Synagogue and Former Ghetto, Croatia
Dubrovnik has a Synagogue and Jewish Museum on Zudioska Street. (It's easy to find the little side street -- just look for stands selling Jewish magnets outside!)
This tiny Sephardic synagogue was built in 1342 and is the second oldest in Europe after Prague. Most of the Jews arrived in the 1500's after the expulsion from Portugal and Spain. Perhaps 45 Jews now live in Dubrovnik and 2,000 in all of Croatia.
The surrounding houses were was part of the Jewish Ghetto where Jews would be locked in like cattle in the evening.

Split is quite a crazy, mad, buzzing city that doesn’t quite sleep coz the party is on at all times out here. But having said that, this is definitely a destination that cannot be missed while you are in Croatia.
The old town of Split is spectacular with narrow alleys and Roman architecture, much of which is courtesy of the Roman Emperor Diocletian who built a massive palace out here at the turn of the fourth century, the ruins of which today make up the core of Split.
During the summer months, Split can be overcrowded and super hot but the geographical location of this city allows ample opportunity to escape to some fantastic beaches (some of them even have some very cool and hip lounge bars) for a much needed break.

Hvar island in Croatia has a lot more to it than just the bars, winery spots, clubs and restaurants found in the main cruise port. In this vlog we explore Stari Grad, one of/if not the oldest town in Croatia. It's full of tiny streets, but not full of people!
Wine in Croatia is amazing. Trust us. While in Stari Grad we got the chance to taste a lot more Croatian wines at a local winery - an excursion as part of our Sail Croatia trip.
If you're considering visiting Hvar we highly recommend you also consider seeing Stari Grad, it may be small, but it definitely feels a lot more local and Croatian than it's older party brother.
Sail Croatia is known for it's Navigator cruise, it's more tailored towards the party vibe and younger crowds. We were so pleased to hear they also offer multiple other cruises and the Explorer cruise was right up our alley! See here for more details:

Split In Your Pocket - Marjan Peninsula & Telegrin
Split In Your Pocket editor Kristina Kovač climbs up Telegrin hill on Marjan peninsula. When ready to escape the hustle and bustle of Croatia's second city, visitors can take a pleasant, ten-minute walk through Veli Varoš up to the wooded heights of the Marjan peninsula, a safe-haven of paved paths (suitable for walking or biking), fragrant forests and beaches. An afternoon of sightseeing, swimming or walking should be started just like the locals would, with a drink at Café Vidilica, which overlooks the port. The peninsula is home to several points of interest, including the remains of a 16th-century Jewish cemetery, hermitages and chapels from the 13th and 14th centuries. Eventually, a set of steps leads up to Telegrin which, at 178m, is the highest point on the peninsula. The islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta can be seen and, on particularly clear days, you can see as far as the island of Vis.

Walking Through The Roman Ruins of Diocletians Palace in Split
The Split Tourist Office hands out a FREE Discover Split newspaper that includes a walking map through Diocletian's Palace, built for his retirement. I found the map invaluable and set off today to look for what we thought were the most interesting parts.
Diocletian's Palace is not only one of the most imposing Roman ruins in existence but also served as a fortress. The Palace itself was begun around 298 A.D., took 10 years to complete with four gates. Enter through either the Silver Gate, Brass Gate, Gold Gate, or Iron Gate.

An Introductory Walk Around Fabulous Split, Croatia
Happy to be in Split, ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and Travels With Sheila set off on the short two-block walk to where the Riva begins. A wide, pedestrian only area that fronts the sea with cafes, ice cream parlors, fast food, along the walls of Emperor Diocletian's Palace. (298 A.D.)
Impossible to walk anywhere in Split without passing a historical monument with signs telling about it in several languages. Past the tsotski market, Republic Square with stalls selling household goods, Marmontova Street with upscale shops, twisting and turning until dinner choice for tonight....
Konoba Marul. A moderate-expensive, recommended restaurant with an extensive menu. So yummy!

We met a local Croatian man who was a political refugee many years ago. He worked in las Vegas for nearly 30 years. Now he lives in Croatia again and heard us speaking english and took us on multiple tours around Split.

We enjoyed ourselves in Split, Croatia on the Dalamatian coast. Split is a very interesting city and was once an important place in the Roman empire. You can see the influences of Rome, Venetian empire and then the slavic heritage.
Split (pronounced [splît]) is the largest Dalmatian city, the second-largest urban centre in Croatia, and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County with population of 227,456 citizens (2007). The city is located on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, spreading over a central peninsula and its surroundings, with its metropolitan area including the many surrounding seaside towns as well. An intraregional transport hub, the city is a link to the numerous surrounding Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula, as well as a popular tourist destination.
Split is also one of the oldest cities in the area, and is traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old, while archaeological research relating to the ancient Greek colony of Aspálathos (6th century BC) establishes the city as being several hundred years older.

The Balkans: A multicultural corner of Europe which is both Muslim, Christian – and Jewish. Jews have been living here since the expulsion from Spain. And it’s a heritage they kept for centuries with Sephardic traditions and Ladino.
