John Heinz at Tinicum National Wildlife Refuge / Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
John Heinz at Tinicum National Wildlife Refuge is in Philadelphia, just across Interstate 95 from the airport. Kevin Tran, a young Philly resident who has been a Student Conservation Association intern for several years, explains why the refuge is important to him and to his city.
America's Wildest Places - John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, Pennsylvania
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum is a green respite nestled within the urban setting of the city of Philadelphia. Refuge lands are a thriving sanctuary teeming with a rich diversity of fish, wildlife, and plants native to the Delaware Estuary. Healthy and productive expanses of freshwater tidal marsh, open waters, mudflats, and forests support the hundreds of species that breed, rear their young, rest during migration, and call the refuge home year-round.
With partners' support, the refuge leads by example in the restoration and conservation of freshwater tidal marsh within the Delaware Estuary. Also, given its accessibility and visibility to over 35 million Americans living within a 2-hour drive, the refuge serves as a prominent ambassador of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Its high-quality programs promote natural and cultural resource stewardship, demonstrate the conservation of urban wildlife habitat, encourage compatible outdoor public use, and serve as a living classroom to connect people with nature and local history. Those who visit John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge are inspired to take action to improve the quality of life for themselves and those around them.
WILDLIFE & HABITAT
The refuge protects a variety of habitats for birds in the highly urbanized landscape of greater Philadelphia. It has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. While most of the 300 plus avian species identified at the refuge utilize it as a migratory stopover, more than 80 species have been recorded nesting on the refuge over the years. Several species are also state listed as either threatened or endangered species or species of state or national management concern.
The refuge is home to the northern river otter and the marsh rice rat. There are eight turtle, three snake, and eight frog and toad species known to inhabit the refuge.
John Heinz NWR protects the largest remnant of freshwater tidal marsh, roughly 285 acres (one-third square mile) that remains in this part of the State. A marsh is a type of wetland that is dominated by herbaceous rather than woody plant species.
TRAVEL & TOURISM
With over 10 miles of trails and several wildlife observation platforms, the refuge provides many areas for visitors to observe wildlife. There is also much to discover, study and photograph.
Canoeing is one of the most popular activities at John Heinz refuge. Paddle the 4.5 mile segment of Darby Creek to wind through the largest freshwater marsh in Pennsylvania.
Recreational fishing is a priority use of the National Wildlife Refuge System and there are many locations to fish throughout John Heinz refuge.
Refuge trails are open every day of the year from sunrise to sunset, free of charge. The main entrance to the Refuge at 86th Street and Lindbergh Boulevard in Southwest Philadelphia provides access to the Visitor Center, foot trails, fishing, and wildlife observation platform.

Exploring a New Spot at the John Heinz Wildlife Refugee (Tinicum, PA)
Make sure to READ the description for MORE DETAILS:
UPLOADS EVERY 2 DAYS :)
June 1st, 2016 -- I went exploring a new spot at the John Heinz Wildlife Refugee in Tinicum with two subscribers -- Neil and David D.. The initial goal for the day was to help them catch their first ever Northern Snakehead!
We did see some Snakeheads and Neil even missed one (spit the hook); but we were unable to catch them. There were also plenty of Common Carp around, but they were extremely finicky to eat. In the end, we all landed a few Sunnies and a few small Bass.
It wasn't the best day of fishing ever; however, we did learn of a new and productive spot in Philly! Sadly, that was Neil's last fishing session in PA, since he has moved down to SC.
Coming up in 2 days: Sunfish Superfecta at the Pennypack Creek! Watch me micro-fish and land the most 4 common Species of Sunfish all in one body of water, in one fishing session. :)

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge Winter Walk
John Heinz NWR at Tinicum is a terrific place to visit any time of the year. It was established to protect the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania and provides 10 miles of trails with extensive bird watching opportunities. Its the most urban refuge in the country, next to Philadelphia International Airport.
Rep. Miccarelli Comments at RAAED PaRAAED April 30, 2011
Residents Against Airport Expansion in Delco held a parade to voice their dissatisfaction with the flawed FAA plans to further expand the Philadelphia International Airport into Tinicum Twp., Delaware County, Pa.
The current plan would see the leveling of houses and businesses in the Lester section of Tinicum Twp and cost many residents their homes and jobs and creating a loss of tax revenue to the township, school district and county.

Kayaking Darby Creek in John Heinz Wildlife Refuge
Spent a warm summer morning kayaking on Darby Creek that flows through John Heinz Wildlife Refuge. The lagoon-like freshwater creek opens up into a wide marsh channel before meeting the Delaware River.
This is easy kayaking conditions, apart from a tide that drains the creek dry. You do not want to find yourself stranded on a mud flat at low tide for a good couple of hours.
The Refuge is America's first Urban Refuge established in 1972 for the purpose of preserving a natural area known as Tinicum marsh. The refuge is bordered by Philadelphia International Airport, Interstate highway and housing communities, but once you walk the refuge paths or kayak Darby Creek the grinding sounds of urban life disappear. It is a precious oasis of modern living and a crucial sanctuary for fish, wildlife and plants.
With this video I tried to capture the serenity that can be found kayaking in the marshland and also highlight the impact of discarded trash within the Refuge.
