History of Gramdaivat Kasba Ganpati
HauteBook speaks with Mrs. Sangita Thakar, one of the trustees of Gram Daivat Shree Kasba Ganpati Mandal, as a part of our venture of 125th Ganeshotsav coverage. This centuries old temple is considered as the first Manacha Ganpati and Gram Daivat of Pune.
In 1630 AD, the idol was found near the house of Astrologist Vinayak Thakar, who used to reside close to the residence of Shivaji Maharaj. When Jijabai was told about this idol, she promptly built a temple, which is today known as the famous Shri Kasba Ganpati Temple. Since then, the Thakar family has been looking after the temple with sincerity and devotion.

Pune, once the seat of power of the Marathas, is a city located on the confluence of the rivers, Mula and Mutha.
The history of the growth of Pune from a small village, Punawadi, to the fastest growing metropolis in India, is highly impressive. The landscape used to be dotted with temples adorned with beautiful sculptures, built at various points of time. Most of these temples were destroyed in the battles that ensued.
In the year 1630 AD, the queen Jijabai Bhosale arrived in Pune with her son Shivaji. Young Shivaji, who was only aged 12, was disturbed by the pathetic plight of the mavals. Shivaji vowed to liberate the mavals from the Mughals. At the same time, an idol of Lord Ganesh was found near the house of Vinayak Thakar, who used to reside close to the residence of the queen, Jijabai Bhosle. Jijabai perceived this as an auspicious moment and promptly built a temple, which is today known as the famous Shri Kasba Ganpati Mandir. Young Shivaji started building the empire of ‘Swarajya’ after this auspicious moment.
Since then, Pune is also known as the city of Lord Ganesh and witnessed the cultural development. Lord Ganesh is the Lord of knowledge and the destroyer of obstacles. Therefore, Lord Ganesh is worshipped on every auspicious occasion. The Peshwas were ardent followers of Lord Ganesh. During the regime of the Peshwas, Shaniwarwada--the house of the Peshwas witnessed the grand celebrations for Lord Ganesh.

Pune Ganpati vlog | 5 Most Famous Ganpati Mandal that you must visit in Pune
So , I visited the 5 most famous Ganpati mandals in Pune!
Video shot on 6th September 2019 with @oneplus
One of the biggest festivals for Hindus, Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated in a grand way in various parts of India. It marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, and the celebrations go on for 11 days till the visarjan.
The whole city takes on a festive look during these 10 days with the lanes and temples decorated and music blaring in every street. Although the idols in Pune are not as humongous as the idols in Mumbai which stand at 30-40 feet, the celebrations in Pune are more about tradition. Tradition is so important that the Ganpati mandals have a priority list when the idols are taken for immersion.
Shri Kasba Ganpati Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal
Established in 1893, this idol holds the status of presiding deity among all Ganesh Mandals in Pune. The Kasba Ganpati is the first one to be immersed and is fittingly called the “Manacha Pahila Ganpati” or the most revered Ganpati. The festivities at this Mandal is a must-watch.
Where: 159, Kasba Peth, Pune
Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati
This Mandal is one of the most popular mandals among the devotees. Established in 1893, this mandal is visited by celebrities as well as locals. Dagduseth Halwai pandal plays an important role in identifying Pune’s cultural significance. This Mandal also holds the crown of the richest Ganpati in Pune.
Where: Babu Genu Chowk, Pune
Hutatma Babu Genu Ganesh Mandal Trust
This Mandal was established in 1970 and is named after a famous freedom fighter. It is believed to fulfill all your wishes and also has a wishing pond, ‘Iccha Poorti Kund‘ where devotees throw coins and make a wish.
Where: Kelkar Road, Narayan Peth
Tulshibaug Ganpati
Tulshibaug Ganpati is the largest Ganpati idol in Pune and stands at 15 feet tall. The mandal pays respect to the women of the Tulshi Baug market who help to bring in the revenue at his market. Tulshibaug Ganpati has a unique theme every year but they don’t spend much on being lavish. A good part of the donations goes for various social causes.
Where: Tulshibaug, Budhwar Peth, Pune
Guruji Talim Ganpati
This mandal has a unique history of being started by one Hindu and one Muslim family in 1887. Guruji Talim Ganpati is said to be the oldest mandal in Pune which started even before Lokmanya Tilak revived the Ganpati festival. This mandal plays a crucial role in spreading communal harmony since it started. It is given the third preference in the immersion procession.

Sarasbaug & Shaniwar Wada- Pune
The Sarasbaug temple houses the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak. A sacred ground of faith for millions of devotees in Pune and around the world, on an average the Sarasbaug temple receives ten thousand visitors a day and this figure goes up to eighty thousand devotees per day on Ganesha Chaturthi and other special occasions. Various dignitaries and luminaries throughout India have made it a point to visit this sacred temple to seek the
blessings of Shri Siddivinayak.
Brief history
In the 18th century, soon after completion of Shree Devdeveshwar Temple on Parvati hill, Shrimant Balaji Baji Rao turned his attention towards the development and beautification of environs of Parvati hills. He decided to construct a lake at the foothills of Parvati. An island of about 25,000 sq.ft. (2,370 m2) area was retained in the middle of this lake. Later on, a beautiful garden was created on this island. Shrimant Nanasaheb Peshwa gave it a poetic name, “Sarasbaug”.
In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built a small temple in Sarasbaug and installed the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak Gajanan, the God he worshiped. Sarasbaug has now become a place of worship for people from all over the world and also a popular hang-out for Punekars.
Shaniwarwada is an 18th-century fortification in the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India. Built in 1732, it was the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire until 1818, when the Peshwas lost control to the East India Company after the Third Anglo-Maratha War. Following the rise of the Maratha Empire, the palace became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century.
The fort itself was largely destroyed in 1828 by an unexplained fire, but the surviving structures are now maintained as a tourist site.
Peshwa Baji Rao I, prime minister to Chattrapati Shahu, laid the ceremonial foundation of his own residence on Saturday, January 10, 1730. It was named Shaniwarwada from the Marathi words Shaniwar (Saturday) and Wada (a general term for any residence complex). Teak was imported from the jungles of Junnar, stone was brought from the nearby quarries of Chinchwad, and Lime (mineral) was brought from the lime-belts of Jejuri. Shaniwarwada was completed in 1732, at a total cost of Rs. 16,110, a very large sum at the time.
The opening ceremony was performed according to Hindu religious customs, on January 22, 1732, another Saturday chosen for being a particularly auspicious day.
Later the Peshwas made several additions, including the fortification walls, with bastions and gates; court halls and other buildings; fountains and reservoirs. Currently, the perimeter fortification wall has five gateways and nine bastion towers, enclosing a garden complex with the foundations of the original buildings. It is situated near the Mula-Mutha River, in Kasba Peth.

Ganesha Festival Of Pune | पुणे गणेश उत्सव | मानाचे पहिले 5 गणपती | Full HD Video
It was in Pune in 1894 that Bal Gangadhar Tilak initiated the concept of the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav — the collective communal celebration of the festival of Lord Ganesha.
#PuneGanpati #GanpatiBappaMorya
During the month of August or September each year, the city celebrates the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Almost every neighborhood puts up a pandal with an idol of Lord Ganesha, often amidst a mythological setting, complete with decorative lights and festive music. The 10-day festival culminates in a carnival-like procession along the busy thoroughfares of the city, with every pandal leading the idol on a float to finally immerse (visarjan) it in the local rivers. This is one of the most important yearly events in the city. There are many pandals set up in important places of the city. The city has the five Maanache Ganpati- The respected Ganpati- at different places. They are the Kasba Ganpati at Kasba Peth, Tambdi Jogeshwari Ganpati at Appa Balwant Chowk, Guruji Talim at Laxmi Road, Tulshibaugh Ganpati at Tulshibaugh and Kesariwada Ganpati at Kesariwada, the ancestral home of the Tilaks. Every year, the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati trust creates a pandal which is a replica of famous monuments and temples in India.
