Discover Amsterdam wetland by canoe
Here is an idea for a excursion outside of Amsterdam by the water, in fields away from canals, birds, flowers and cows.
What if, to better understand and appreciate Amsterdam, you had to leave town, take a bus up North and stop in the middle of the countryside to browse by canoe?
Majel from Wetland Safari takes you on a beautiful trip in the wetlands, 10 minutes away from the central Station of Amsterdam.
It starts in Watergang, a village with 83 houses and 217 residents. A cafe, a map introducing you to the area, and there you are, with a red life jacket on your back ready for an adventure.
The stroll is chilled. The area is chilled. Majel is chilled. All is good.
You will leave the picturesque canals of the village behind for the fields. Majel will talk to you about water, polders and dams, and the vegetation which makes the irrigation system possible.
The Dutch are the best in the world when it comes to water management and the creation of land out of inundated areas. A proverb says that God created the Earth and Dutch people created the Netherlands. Global warming, the rising of the oceans and droughts present new challenges. The increasing salanity of the water levels, dam soundness on the sea side and on the polder side… Dams must remain damp on the inside. If they dry up, they become brittle and they collapse.
Wetlands is a nesting or passage area for many migrating birds. Black-tailed godwit, ruff, purple heron, harrier, and other passerines. The best period to enjoy the birds’ presence is from spring to autumn. By then, most of the birds would have left for Africa or Asia.
You may come across cows surprised to see you there. They are taken from pasture to pasture on a barge.
Flora is surprising here too. The landscape may be dominated by reeds and rushes but you can see merciless carnivore plants, elegant meadowsweets, water mint, stunning water lilies, demure forget-me-nots or water irises.
If this landscape inspired Flemish painters, Rembrandt coming first to mind, it rather reminds you of Nympheas by Monet or to Manet when you enjoy a picnic amongst the flowers in the summer.
Back to the village, we made a dip in a shallow but refreshing lake, and at the end we have a drink all together to share our impressions. In our group, there were a Spanish couple splitting their time between England and the Netherlands and some Canadian women living in the US.
The trip takes half a day and it is a really unique and lovely experience.

Canoeing in The Netherlands | Better Together Travels
Per a recommendation from Rick Steves, we discovered Wetlands Safari in Amsterdam. An alternative to the touristy canal tour in the city, this canoe trip brought us to the polderland and closer to the Holland that Van Gogh once lived.

A 4.5 hour canoe trip through Amsterdam.
We left while misty and came home under a clear sky and autumn sun. Seeing our home town from water gives a total different perspective. No rush hour, no traffic, the city seems to be empty.
Just a beautiful Sunday afternoon in a canoe does the trick...

Wetlands Safari Canoe Tour Amsterdam
New Amsterdam Travel Video- Great tip: Looking for a nice half day trip outside of the city, that is both easy and totally represents the Holland experience? Then you should try the Wetlands Safari Canoe Tour. In this vid, follow Sander and Jessica on this fun expedition, which starts just 15 minutes north of Amsterdam by bus and takes you through the Dutch waterlands. Navigate through marsh and meadow islands with cows, windmills & bird life and float through quaint, picturesque villages with storybook houses, under wooden bridges and by swans & baby ducks. The canoeing is relatively easy and doing it as a group makes it a friendly and communal experience. Owner/leader Majel is both fun & knowledgeable, giving you Dutch anecdotes about the area along the way. Halfway, enjoy a wine & cheese picnic next to black & white bovines that go mooo! Special thanks to our group mates from India, Ohio & Minnesota who let us put our camera in their faces.

Fun Friday - Canoeing and the speeleiland Amsterdamse Bos
On Fridays in August I've enjoyed organizing events for the youth that are not away on holiday and call them Fun Fridays. It's a great time to do something different, getting people out having fun, and getting to know each other better. Finding community is important for young people, especially among the internationals and expats.
This Fun Friday included taking the kids to the Amsterdamse Bos for some canoeing and playing around on the speeleiland. We had a blast. Charlotte and Kelly kept fussing at me for filming and not paddling. Although my few paddles would make up for their dozen and actually sent us toward some bushes. haha.
Like and subscribe for more fun games, youth stuff, living abroad, and random videos.
If you're looking for something fun to do in Amsterdam, check out Kanoverhuur Amsterdamse Bos. We've used them many a times with the youth. Great place, good boats, they're patient with the kids, and have tasty ice cream stuff. Just be sure to bring cash. Check out their website and go enjoy the lovely Amsterdamse Bos by water. There's also the fun play island next to it that's free and great for all ages.
Check out my Patreon page if you'd like to help me in my work with multicultural youth and families in Amsterdam. Many of the youth we work with are looking for a place to belong and meet other kids who understand what it's like to be living in a foreign place.
If live in the Amsterdam or North Holland region and you'd like me to organize events for your organization or group, let me know. Would love to help you plan a fun and exciting party.
Also, if you've relocated to the North Holland region, I'd love to help you and your family adjust and get connected in the area. Check out my website to get a better idea of what I do.
