Narrow gauge railroad at Kenosha Pass, Colorado
This is part of the old narrow gauge railroad line that has been partially reconstructed at Kenosha Pass, Colorado. The original line was built in 1879 and traversed the pass to provide a rail linke between Denver and South Park mining communities like Fairplay.
The tracks were finally removed in 1938 but were originally constructed by the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad.

On the way home, we visited the Hoosier Pass and the real South Park town
The year was 1859. Gold was discovered in South Park and the rush was on! Hordes of gold-seekers spilled into the Park, and within a few short months the mountains were dotted with mining camps sporting names like Tarryall, Leavick, Eureka and Buckskin Joe. These camps grew to become boom towns, thriving communities on the edge of the frontier. Gradually the mining dried up and the people moved on, leaving their towns and camps to the elements, until all that remained were decaying ghost towns.
South Park City is a remarkable restoration of these early towns, preserving the history of our nation's frontier while it educates and entertains the present. Located in Fairplay, Colorado, the museum is an accurate representation of a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Forty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. Seven of the buildings are on their original sites; the others have been moved from abandoned camps and ghost towns in South Park, a 900 square mile basin surrounded by Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains. The restored buildings contain period room settings and exhibits illustrating the professions, trades and industries that contributed to life in a nineteenth century Colorado mining town.

Tarryall Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River, approximately 25 miles (40 km) long, in Park County in central Colorado in the United States. It drains a rural portion of north and central South Park, an intermontane grassland in the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver. It rises in the high Rockies in several forks along the continental divide in the Pike National Forest southwest of Boreas Pass. It descends to the southwest through a short canyon, emerging into South Park near Como, Colorado. It crosses U.S. Highway 285 east of Red Hill Pass northeast of Fairplay, then meanders towards the southeast, joining the South Platte from the east in the southeastern corner of South Park.
The creek was one of the most active locations for the prospecting of gold during the Colorado Gold Rush in 1859. The Tarryall diggings and other nearby sites on the west side of South Park attracted thousands of prospectors over Ute Pass and Kenosha Pass, and the towns of Tarryall and Hamilton, both now completely vanished, were soon founded along the creek. There are no towns on the upper creek today.
Park County is the 17th most extensive of the 64 counties of the State of Colorado of the United States. The county was named after the large geographic region known as South Park, which was named by early fur traders and trappers in the area. The geographic center of the State of Colorado is located in Park County. The county population was 14,523 at U.S. Census 2000. The county seat is Fairplay. (wikipedia)
Tarryall was a former town in northern Park County, Colorado in the United States, and still exists as an unincorporated town of cabins and old buildings.
The town is located on Tarryall Creek in the eastern edge of the South Park, between Lake George and Jefferson. The town was founded in 1859 during the Colorado Gold Rush after the discovery of placer gold in Tarryall Creek. The Tarryall Diggings, as well as other discoveries, prompted a flood of prospectors over Kenosha Pass.
Most newly arriving miners found that all available land for mining along the Tarryall Creek had been completely claimed by earlier arrivals, and much resentment ensued. It was thought that the earlier miners had claimed much more land than a man could reasonably work. Another mining town, founded not far away on the Middle Fork of the South Platte River, was named Fairplay as a dig at Tarryall.
At its height, Tarryall had a population of several thousand. A marker along U.S. Highway 285 near Como where it crosses Tarryall Creek many miles upstream commemorates the Tarryall Diggings and the former town. (tripwolf)
