PORTUGAL: Statue Christ the King - viewpoint Almada /Lisbon
The Sanctuary of Christ the King (Portuguese: Santuário de Cristo Rei) is a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in the city of Almada, Portugal.
It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The project was inaugurated on 17 May 1959, while Portugal was ruled by António de Oliveira Salazar who gave his final permission for the project. The giant statue in cement was erected to express gratitude that the Portuguese were spared the horrors and destruction of World War II.
In 1941 the land which was used to construct the monument was acquired. The construction project began in 1949 and took ten years to complete. But it was only in 1952 that the first construction started.
The first inauguration of the complex officially was on 17 May 1959. On the 25th anniversary of the Shrine in 1984, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. A new plan was approved to recondition the grounds of the Shrine and also to build a Sanctuary, which included a rectory, a chapel, administration and meeting halls and exhibition galleries.
In order to support pilgrimage to the site, in June 2004 new spaces in the Sanctuary building were inaugurated, including a dining room for 150 people and two segregated dormitories. This was followed on 17 May 2005, with the inauguration of a 150-person dining area and 80-person meeting hall, in addition to two segregated dormitories, dining room and kitchen.
Improvements to the monument and sanctuary of Christ the King began in 2006. By 17 May of that year, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was inaugurated. In the following year (17 May 2007), the Pope John XXIII hall was opened, containing eight oil paintings.
________________________
The monument was erected on an isolated clifftop 133 m above the sea, overlooking the Tagus River left bank.
It is the highest point in Almada, on a plateau dominated by the 25 de Abril Bridge, and close to the Estação Elevatória e Reservatório do Pragal.
It is accessible from Lisbon by car (over the 25 de Abril Bridge east of the crossing), by train through station in Pragal and by ferry over the Tagus, through the port of Cacilhas in Almada.
The monument consists of a trapezoidal pedestal of 82 metres (269 ft) height, formed by four arches and a flat platform, supporting the 28 metres (92 ft) image of Christ.
Its base was designed by architect António Lino in the form of a gate, while the statue of Christ the King was designed by sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa.
The four arches of the pedestal are oriented in the directions of the compass rose. The figure of Christ, comparable to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, forms a cross, with its arms extended out facing the city of Lisbon, as if to embrace the city. Due to issues of security and safety, the monument was sufficiently distanced from the cliffs on which it predominates.
At the base of the statue is the observation deck, at 82 metres (269 ft), which enables panoramic views of the city of Lisbon, the Tagus River and the 25 de Abril Bridge.
Under the statue, occupying a fifth of the pedestal's height, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz) with an entrance from the northern facade. This space is distinctly different with its masonry stone, the northern facade surmounted by cross and the other facades containing narrow doors.
Inside two of the pillars is an elevator system with access to the terrace; the statue is 79.30 metres high, and overlooks the Tagus (192 metres above the river).
To the south of the monument is the Sanctuary building, comprising a rectangular body of three wings, with facades covered with masonry brick.

LISBON: Baixa Pombalina - downtown district (2/5) Portugal
The Pombaline Lower Town (Portuguese: Baixa Pombalina) is an elegant district in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It takes its name from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who took the lead in ordering the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on rebuilding the city, and the current grid pattern strongly differs from the organic streetplan that characterised the district before the earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa is one of the first examples of earthquake-resistant construction. Architectural models were tested by having troops march around them to simulate an earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa consists of the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.
________________________
The Praça do Comércio (English: Commerce Square) is located in Lisbon, near the Tagus river. The square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown.
Arco da Rua Augusta (English: Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, triumphal arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction on the Praça do Comércio (square). It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Because of the top cornice's great height (over 100 feet/30 m), the figures above it had to be made colossal. From 9th of August 2013 it is possible to reach the viewpoint oat the top of the arch, using a lift and two flights of steep stairs.
Praça do Rossio (English: Rossio Square) is the popular name of the Praça de D. Pedro IV. It has been one of its main squares since the Middle Ages. It has been the setting of popular revolts and celebrations, bullfights and executions, and is now a preferred meeting place of Lisbon natives and tourists alike.
The Praça da Figueira (English: Square of the Fig Tree) is a large square in the centre of Lisbon. It is part of the Baixa Pombalina, the area of the city reurbanised after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In 1971 a bronze equestrian statue representing King John I (1357-1433) was inaugurated in the square. In 1999/2000, during the last renovation of the square, the statue was relocated from the middle to a corner of the square, in order to make it visible from the Praça do Comércio.
Praça dos Restauradores (English: Restauradores Square) is a public square in Lisbon, surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings. It is located at the southeast end of Avenida da Liberdade, near Rossio square. The square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, inaugurated in 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War, in 1640.

LISBON: Belém Tower (Portugal)
Torre de Belém is a fortified tower that was part of a defensive system to protect access to the Tagus estuary from pirates and enemy attacks.
Belém Tower was constructed on the rocky outcropping/island along the northern margin of the Tagus River. It is located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon/Lisboa, Portugal.
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and a 30-metre (98.4 ft), four-storey tower.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery) because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defence system at the mouth of the Tagus river and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
It has incorrectly been stated that the tower was built in the middle of the Tagus and now sits near the shore because the river was redirected after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In fact, the tower was built on a small island in the Tagus River near the Lisbon shore.
The tower is about 12 metres (39 ft) wide and 30 metres (98 ft) tall.

Things to do when in Lisbon (Like us on facebook and voyagelight.com)
Walk streets of Alfama
Get lost in countless narrow streets of the oldest district of Lisbon - Alfama. Go up and down the hilly lanes and take your time to admire buildings covered in painted ceramic tilework called Azulejo. Not only these tiles fulfil their decorative function, but also serve as temperature controlling element. These small pieces are responsible for the magical atmosphere. Tiles can be found everywhere - outside, inside, covering churches’ walls, museums, bridges or regular houses. A signature artwork of Portugal has plenty variations of colours and patterns, often creating a bigger picture. Just wander around and grasp the artistic feel of the place. You will come across many graffiti too.
Reach the castle
St. George’s Castle is located on the hill and is surrounded by the Citadel.
This is the place not to be missed due to amazing views and the historical values of Medieval Moorish Castle. From the citadel you can see the whole city, the Tagus River and the 25 April Bridge.
Checkout the city from different viewpoints
Lisbon is definitely one of the cities which are pleasant to watch from a higher point. Its hilly terrain gives plenty of options from where you can grasp as much as possible for the eyes. Viewpoints, in Portuguese - Miraduoros, are located in any upper part of the city, so patience in incline walking is necessary, but one’s efforts will be rewarded. Miraduoro da Graca (Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen) is definitely worth recommendation, among many others: Miraduoro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, São Pedro de Alcântara, Miraduoro de Santa Luiza or Miraduoro de Santo Estevao.
Spend time in Bairro Alto and Chiado
As normally expected of the central area of any city, in Bairro Alto and Chiado walks, squares, architectonic attractions are accumulated. Everything a tourist is looking for can be found. If you would like to buy something, eat a local dish or just wander around busy streets - this is the place to be. One can observe the city’s flow during the day and enjoy partying at night.
Raise above the rooftops using Santa Justa Elevator
Located centrally and a landmark of Lisbon, the lift gives the opportunity to admire the city form a much more different perspective. One can see the vivid rooftops and the castle hill from here. Although this is lower than some of the viewpoints, it allows to understand the levels of terrain and buildings arrangement.
Visit the main square and the Triumphal Arch
Enter Praca do Comercio through the Triumphal Arch and see its greatness. Climb to the top of the arch to see the main square from the bird’s flight view. Get to the river bank, marvel at the Red Bridge. Feel the vibe of the place and enjoy it. Listen to men playing instruments, see tourists taking pictures. Be a part of this historically, politically and strategically important spot on Lisbon’s map where once crucial decisions for the city have been made.
See famous Lisbon trams
Another hallmark of Lisbon are the old-styled (most frequently yellow) trams. Walking around, one can see them passing by or actually take tram number 28 which goes through the most popular sights. Another possibility is to seat down comfortably by one of the streets along the tramline and watch them, in the meanwhile having something to eat and drink. That’s an alternative for those who hate packed trams.
Cross the Red Bridge and see the statue of Jesus
Sanctuary of Christ the King is in Almada district. To get there you either need to go through the 25 de Abril Bridge or get a ferry. The other side of the river is more modern – this is a good opportunity to see the discrepancy between new and old Lisbon. Monument of Christ was and inspiration taken from the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. The 110 meters high monument is dedicated to Jesus Christ’s heart. Under the Statue there is a Chapel of Our Lady of Peace (Nossa Senhora da Paz).
Find Torre de Belem and Monastry De Jeronimo
This 12 meters x 30 meters tower was a part of a defence from 16th century. Right now it stands at the bank of Tagus river, but previously (before the river flow change) was on a small island serving as support for the defence fortress. Close by is the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style Monastery. If around there, it’s worth seeing due to exceptional architectonical style and details. Both, Tower and the Monastery are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The steep streets of Alfama, one of Lisbon’s oldest areas, are lined with shops selling traditional crafts and cafes. Passengers pack the historic no. 28 tram, which winds through Alfama on its way up to 11th-century São Jorge Castle. Views from Miradouro da Graça terrace stretch over the city to the River Tagus. In the evening, melancholy Fado music can be heard in some of the area's long-running restaurants.
The Alfama is the oldest district of Lisbon, spreading on the slope between the São Jorge Castle and the Tejo river. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma (الحَمّة), meaning hot fountains or baths. It contains many important historical attractions, as well as an abundance of Fado bars and restaurants.
Graça Convent is one of the oldest convents in Lisbon. According the legend, in 1362 the statue of Our Lady of Grace appeared in the network of a fisherman. The convent part is nowadays used by the army and is not open for visits, but the church is still in use. Most of the original Graça Church collapsed in the earthquake of 1755, so what you see today is an 18th century baroque monument. Inside it is partly decorated in 16th and 17th century tiles, while outside is Sophia de Mello Belvedere (famous Portuguese poet ) which is one of the city's most popular viewpoints.

Originally a church, in the 20th century it was converted into the National Pantheon, in which important Portuguese personalities are buried. Take a tour of Batalha Monastery in Batalha, Portugal -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Located in Portugal's District of Leiria, is Batalha Monastery, an ornate Gothic and medieval Portuguese style convent.
Construction drudged on from the late fourteenth century until the early sixteenth century, making the building period over 130 years.
The convent was built by King Joao after the Portuguese army beat the Castilians in 1385, resulting in independence of Portugal from Spanish rule.
The interior contains Manueline style decor, such as the elaborate 15th and 16th century stained glass windows.
The limestone exterior displays rows of stone sculptures along with ribbons and borders of delicately etched stonework.
Though the once gray exterior has yellowed through time, the convent is well preserved and contains lavish historical treasures.

Silves Castle, Silves, Algarve, Portugal, Europe
The Castle of Silves is a castle in the civil parish of Silves in the municipality of Silves in the Portuguese Algarve. Built between the 8th and 13th century, the castle is one of the best preserved of the Moorish fortifications in Portugal, the most important Moorish fortification resulting in its classification as a National Monument in 1910. From archaeological excavations, it is assumed that the first fortress on this site consisted of a Lusitanian castro. It is believed that Phoenicans, Greeks and Carthaginians traversed the site at one time, but that around 201 B.C. the Romans conquered Silves, transforming it into a citadel of their occupation, and commercial center that prospered for the next five centuries. Around 716, the Visigothic citadel was conquered by the Umayyad Caliphate who reinforced the existing fortifications with a new series of walls. This new period resulted in a great period of development, under the Moorish occupiers, that include the extensive walls in the west. In 1160, it was sacked by Ferdinand I of León and Castile, but remained only for a short time in the hand of the Christians: it was quickly recaptured by the Moors. King Sancho I of Portugal, supported by the powerful Crusader army, conquered the city, after a prolong encirclement in 1189. But, a grande army, under orders from Amir al-Mu'minin, in 1191, retook the city. The buildings of the Taifa kingdoms of the 11th century, which includes the Palace of Balconies (where Al-Mutamid, lived as the poet Ibn Amarhe) progressed in the 11th century. The walls and towers that today represent the Castle of Silves came from these campaigns and public works by Almoravides and Almohads in the 12th and 13th centuries. The castles internal water catchment, and large rain fed underground cistern were used to provide freshwater for the surrounding dwellings (to as late as the 1920s). It would only be in the 13th century, during the reign of Afonso III of Portugal, that forces under the command of D. Paio Peres Correia, would definitively take the fortress. A foral was issued in 1266 by King Afonso III of Portugal. In order to expand the influence of Portuguese control, this foral was then supported by residential concessions from King Denis (in 1305), that were later repeated in 1380, under King Fernando I of Portugal. But, even naming Prince Henry the Navigator alcalde for Silves (in 1457), and new concessions in 1487, under King John II, little development occurred in the territory. On 1 November 1755, the castle was damaged by the Lisbon earthquake, resulting in the ...loss of its cathedral, tower, castle and walls..., as identified by Moreira de Mendonça (1758). Sometime during the 18th century, the dungeons were reconstructed, following the earthquake, and the ceilings repainted. During the Liberal Wars the walls were repaired by the population, under Remexido, who ignored the foundations of the original castle. In excavations beginning on 13 August 2005 and lasting into 2006, archaeologists Rosa and Mário Varela Gomes brought light onto the vestiges of the Muslim ruins, and in particular the 11th century governors palace, occupied by Al-Mutamid (from designs of polychromatic stucco). During the construction of the tea house, vestiges of another building, that was occupied by the Infante Henry, along the southwest of the military square, near the walls. In March 2005, a risk assessment map for the zone was completed for the principal entrance-way by the DGEMN. This resulted in a proposal by the IPPAR and Direção Regional de Cultura de Faro to expand the zone of protection to include the walls and Almedina Gate, on 12 June 2008, and approved on 1 October 2008 by the IGESPAR. The DGEMN made its first intervention in the decade of 1940, demolishing the buildings annexed to the walls of the castle, an construction to lower the soil surfaces near the entrance to the castle and in the military square. At the same time, the rooftops of the guardhouse was re-tiled; the reconstruction of one of the towers in a degraded state of ruin; recuperation of various walls; consolidation of the keep tower and restoration of the parapets; reconstruction of the battlements; recuperation of the gates; re-plastering in the guardhouse; and the general cleaning of the cistern in the military square. Two decades later (1965) the walls were repaired following the removal a shed along its flanks, which involved of the repair of the axis. In 1967, work began on a municipal museum within the towers of the castle, resulting in the ornamentation of the towers in regional tile; retouches and reconstruction of spaces; and the installation of electricity.
JWTT: Visits Belem Tower in Lisbon, Portugal Oct 2014
Belém Tower or the Tower of St Vincent is a fortified tower located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus river and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon.
The tower was built in the early 16th century and is a prominent example of the Portuguese Manueline style, but it also incorporates hints of other architectural styles. The structure was built from lioz limestone and is composed of a bastion and a 30 m (100 foot), four storey tower.
