(Molemmat olivat lomamatkoja - itse asiassa Murmans oli ensimmäinen varsinaisen lomamatkani kohde vuonna 2005 - tein siis elämäni ensimmäisen varsinaisen ulkomaanmatkan Pohjoismaiden (Tukhoma) ulkopuolelle Murmanskiin - monet tekevät sen esim. Kanarian saarille....:-)

Artists create elaborate ice sculptures in Russia
Russia's seasonal Snow Village in the northern town of Kirovsk has once again sprung up ahead of its official opening on December 25th.
This year's icy architectural wonder consists of igloo-like exhibition halls featuring the work of twenty artists.
Organisers have refused to give away the theme of the 2016 event, but some of the work already in place, such as a bear playing the balalaika, appear to suggest that 'Russia in the eye of the foreigner' may be a unifying concept.…

Murmansk (Russian: Му́рманск; Kildin Sami: Мурман ланнҍ; Northern Sami: Murmánska; Skolt Sami: Muurman) is a port city and the administrative center of Murmansk Oblast, Russia, located in the extreme northwest part of Russia, on the Kola Bay, an inlet of the Barents Sea on the northern shore of the Kola Peninsula, close to the Russia's borders with Norway and Finland.
Despite its extreme northern location above the Arctic Circle, Murmansk tends to be nearly the same as any other Russian city of its size, featuring highway and railway access to the rest of Europe, a railway station, and a trolleybus system, in fact, the northernmost on Earth.

The Dawns Here Are Quiet (Episode 1) (1972) movie
The film is set in Karelia (near Finland) in 1942 during World War II and was filmed near Ruskeala. Senior Sergeant Vaskov is stationed with a group of young female anti-aircraft gunners in a railway station far from the front line. Vaskov is not used to these gunners' active, playful personalities and therefore clashes with them over daily issues. But Vaskov, being the only man in the village, has to accommodate them in many cases.
One day, two German paratroopers appear in the forest nearby. Thinking that they may sabotage military facilities, Vaskov and five of the women embark on a reconnaissance mission to attempt to stop them.

The Siege of Leningrad (Блокада Ленинграда) was a prolonged military blockade undertaken from the south by the Army Group North of Nazi Germany against the Russian city of Leningrad (St. Petersburg) on the Eastern Front in World War II. The Finnish army invaded from the north, co-operating with the Germans until they had recaptured territory lost in the recent Winter War, but refused to make further approaches to the city.
The siege started on 8 September 1941, when the last road to the city was severed. Although the Soviet forces managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, the siege was not lifted until 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history, and possibly the costliest in casualties suffered. Some historians classify it as genocide.
