Kuala Lumpur is a large city in the tropics near the equator in South East Asia. It receives high amounts of precipitation (rainfall) that can lead to flash flooding within the city, which river engineering schemes attempt to minimise. Pollution of the rivers is also a problem with debris from the dumping of rubbish into the rivers and discharge of sewage and surface waters directly in to the river. Pollution can lead to eutrophication and the city planning authorities have used various schemes to oxygenate the river water, such as the building of cascades to help mix oxygen into the water.

The Klang River winds through Malaysia’s capital city of Kuala Lumpur and flows through the most densely populated area of the Southeast Asian country. Over the years and in the wake of rapid development in the city, the river became increasingly polluted and experienced intensified flooding during storm seasons. It became the backdoor of development and a dumping ground that is disconnected from people’s daily lives.
To reconnect the city, the river and her people, Kuala Lumpur City Hall launched the River of Life project in 2012 and AECOM was chosen as a delivery partner through an international design competition. River of Life is one of Malaysia government’s Economic Transformation Programs, an initiative which combines high-impact projects and programs to elevate the country to developed nation status.
Divided into three main components – river cleaning, river master-planning and beautification – the USD1.3-billion River of Life project covers the confluences of three city rivers, with a total area of 781 hectares and 63 hectares of water bodies. The project is set to bring the community ‘back’ to the river through a 100 per cent transformation into a vibrant waterfront with high economic and commercial value, rejuvenating the city’s river and re-connecting it to the surrounding urban fabric.
AECOM is delivering the river master planning and beautification component of the project, and has also provided a strategic framework for urban and landscape design guidelines. The guidelines ensure designs are constructed on a common baseline while promoting cohesive developments in the Klang Valley region.

River Of Life - Transforming Kuala Lumpur's Landscape
In 2009, when Datuk Seri Najib took over the administration, one of his visions is to see the full potential of Kuala Lumpur, through the various transformation programmes.
The river of life is one of the government's efforts under his wing to transform the Klang and Gombak rivers into vibrant and bustling waterfronts which simultaneously, will transform Kuala Lumpur's landscape into one that is high livability offering a quality of life to the city dwellers.
Launched in 2011, it is a pioneer project under the greater Kuala Lumpur-Klang Valley initiative with full completion expected in 2020.
The first phase of the river beautification project which covered the river stretch around the Masjid Jamek to Daya Bumi area, has been completed.
There are three major components to the RM4.4 billion project namely river cleaning, beautification and land development.
Of the number, RM3.4 billion is to clean up the river and the rest, for landscaping.
To date, clean-up efforts are being conducted along a 110 kilometre-network of eight rivers which include Sungai Gombak, Sungai Ampang, Sungai Klang and Sungai Keroyong.
It was reported that when the project was first launched, the water quality was classified as class three or four -- which was unsafe for body contact.
This, however, will change in 2020 when it gets rehabilitated to class two-b which is defined as safe for recreation and body contact.
When completed, the project will deliver affordable housing for over 35,000 new residents, one million square metres of commercial space and over 27,000 new employment opportunities.
It will also raise public transportation usage within the master plan area from 15% to 60% and reduce traffic demand by 15% by 2020.
The Interceptor: Giant ‘vacuum’ cleaning up Klang River
The severely polluted Klang River is set to get a new lease of life with the help of a Dutch foundation devoted to fighting plastic pollution in the world's oceans.
The Ocean Cleanup Foundation’s contraption called 'The Interceptor' has the ability and capacity to clear up at least 100,000 kg of garbage daily from the river.
The “big cleanup” is part of the Selangor Maritime Gateway (SMG) initiative under the Menteri Besar Inc.

A giant solar-powered barge has been deployed in Malaysia’s Klang River, one of the world’s most polluted waterways. The River Of Life (ROL) here has been named one of the top 10 waterfront districts in the world by the United Kingdom's Independent news portal.
This colourful chunk of the city centre sits on the banks of the Klang River,which is the focus of the River Of Life,a regeneration project described as one of most expensive urban river restoration projects ever undertaken.
But,it has paid off..Today,there are riverside cafes,hi-tech fountains,bicyle paths and night time light shows which turn the water into stunning cobalt blue,it said.
According to Bernama,the ROL project was initiated as a way of reviving the converging Klang and Gombak rivers in the city centre,and transforming the banks into bulit-up waterfront areas with economic and commercial value through river cleaning,beautification and land development.
The first phase of the ongoing initiative involves Precint 7,which incorporates such historic attractions as Dataran Merdeka and Central Market.
Aside from the ROL,four other waterfront districts in Asia,including Singapore's Clark Quay,also made the cut.

Masjid India is a beautiful masjid near Jalan Medan Bunus, about half km from Jamek Masjid and one km from Dataran Merdeca. Then we took a walk to Masjid Jamek. Jamek Mosque or Masjid Jamek of Kuala Lumpur is an important colorful mosque. Women have to wear a head scarf to go inside. They provide head scarfs at the entrance for a donation of 10 Ringit. The Mosque is not as big as National Mosque, but still quite popular with fantastic views around. Non-muslims are allowed to visit inside. On this day it was closed and hence we visited again later.
Our next destination was Dataran Merdeca which was about half km. From Jamek Masjid we took a walk towards Dataran Merdeca. On the way we first saw Panggung Bandaraya, a big historical building (Pejabat Ukur FMS Lama) and then saw the Gombuk River crossing the road. As I checked the map Gombuk river is merging with Klang River right here just behind Jamek Masjid. Later I read that the City of Kuala Lumpur was developed at this confluence of Gombuk river and Klang river and named after this. Kuala Lumpur means “muddy estuary”. Klang river is a big river about 120 kms long.
Just by the roadside we saw huge flea market and went inside. It was called Bazar Ramadhan KL located very near to Dataran Merdeca. There were two stretches of the markets with thousands of shops inside. You can see the beautiful shops in the video. Thereafter we went to Dataran Merdeca which I will show you in the next video.

Kuala Lumpur Malaysia holiday 2017. While we were vacationing in Kuala Lumpur in November 2017 it was great to see the new project that the Malaysian government had started to revitalize the Klang river. The Klang river runs through the city of Kuala Lumpur from one side to the other and was once a very important part of the city’s infrastructure. If you know anything of the history of Kuala Lumpur you’ll know that it’s name means muddy confluence; kuala is the point where two rivers join together or an estuary, and lumpur means mud. Unfortunately in recent years the city’s river had been living up to it’s name had become a place where not only mud flowed but junk and rubbish was often disposed of.
Now the government wants to give new life to it’s “River of Life” and so a project has begun to improve the quality of the water while also improving the surrounding environment adding green areas, walkways and creating a vibrant riverfront reminiscent of cities such as Vancouver, Melbourne, Geneva and Seoul.
Although this vlog only represents a small portion of the entire plan, it’s gives you a good sense of what the completed project will look like and how it will bring a huge improvement to an important area of downtown Kuala Lumpur.
I can’t wait to return again to the place that has now become my favorite city and to see the whole project once it’s completed. See you soon Kuala Lumpur. ????????❤
