Kourtaliotiko Gorge near Plakias, Crete, Greece
Along the way from Rethymno to Plakias, Kourtaliotiko Gorge between the 984-meter Kouroupas Mountain and 573-meter Koules Mountain was dry and arid, except for the running stream at the bottom. It was also very warm and apparently there had not been much rain on Crete in almost a month, so it was drier than usual. The Kourtaliotiko Gorge has a couple of small chapels built into the rocks, still used for special religious occasions.

Plakias is surrounded by mountains to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south. The name in Greek means flat but the approach and coastline are quite mountainous and dramatic.
Small hotels and many beachfront restaurants & cafes. The large crescent bay of sandy beach and the harbour provide a varied and yet not too busy destination.
Triopetra is located about 52km south of Rethymno and 13km southeast of the village Akoumia, at the foot of the mountain Siderotas and next to dense green olive groves. It can be accessed by car, through the paved roads that start from Akoumia or Sachtouria. It is the central part of the vast beachfront, called Akoumiani Gialia, i..e Akoumian Beach. This is named like this because the wider area of Triopetra was once the winter “refuges” of Akoumia village residents, who had built small cottages to spend the night near their lands. Today, the lucky Akoumians have repaired the cottages near the stunning beach.

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge, also known as the Asomatos Gorge, is a gorge on the southern side of the western part of the island of Crete. It is situated where the Kourtaliotiko River flows south between the mountains of Kouroupa and Xiron. The village of Koxare is at the northern end of the gorge. A road runs north to south through the gorge joining Koxare to Asomatos. A small church (Agios Nikolaos) sits within the gorge. There is also a 40 metre high waterfall. There is a specific point on the gorge, about 20 meters from the northern entrance, where you can hear some claps, like hands coming together. These claps are the kourtala, that give the name to the gorge. They are the consequence of the wind being funneled through the high caves of the gorge and breaking the sound barrier. The point near the northern entrance is the main point to hear that sound.

Το φαράγγι του Κουρταλιώτη ή Κουρταλιώτικο βρίσκεται στα νότια του νομού Ρεθύμνου, 22χλμ από την πόλη του Ρεθύμνου και έχει μήκος 3χλμ. Είναι ένα από τα εντυπωσιακότερα φυσικά αξιοθέατα του νομού Ρεθύμνου. Οι τεράστιες βραχώδεις πλαγιές του φαραγγιού φθάνουν τα 600 μέτρα και είναι γεμάτες ανοίγματα και σπηλιές, όπου ζουν σημαντικά είδη ορνιθοπανίδας. Από μέσα περνάει ο Κουρταλιώτης Ποταμός που πηγάζει από τον κάμπου του Αγίου Βασιλείου, διασχίζει το φαράγγι και εκβάλει στο διάσημο Φοινικόδασος του Πρέβελη, αφού πριν ενωθεί με το φαράγγι Φρατί. Στο τελευταίο του κομμάτι ονομάζεται και Μεγάλος Ποταμός.
The Gorge of Kourtaliotis is located 22km south of Rethymno and has a length of 3km. It is one of the most spectacular natural attractions of Rethymnon. The huge cliffs of the canyon reach a height of 600 meters and are full of openings and caves, where significant fauna species live. The canyon is crossed by the Kourtaliotis River which flows up to Lake Preveli, after merging with Frati Gorge. In its latest part it is called Big River.

The Kourtaliotiko Gorge (Greek: Κουρταλιώτικο Φαράγγι), also known as the Asomatos Gorge (Greek: Φαράγγι Ασώματου), is a gorge on the southern side of the western part of the island of Crete. It is situated where the Kourtaliotiko River flows southwards between the mountains of Kouroupa and Xiron.

A small ruined church (Agios Nikolaos) sits within the gorge. There is also a 40 metre high waterfall.
The cliffs on the side of the gorge provide a roosting site for the Lammergeier vulture.[1]

Activities on Crete Greece: Perhaps you have never been to Crete in Greece and you have no idea how versatile the island is. There is something nice to do for every age and interest; from interesting sights on Crete to lazing on the beach and from beautiful nature walks to snorkelling in the Mediterranean. Nobody needs to get bored. Because there is a lot to do on the Greek island, we create every week a program with activities on Crete for our guests. We take into account that not everyone loves the same things to do and therefore we provide the necessary variety.
The Mesonas gorge, walking at Kavoussi Crete: On Monday we will walk in the Mesonas gorge in East Crete. It is quite a tough hike that starts at the village of Kavoussi and passes along the archaeological settlements Vrontas, Azoria and Kastro. During the hike there are often gorgeous views over the Bay of Mirabello. Large parts of the hike are on a kalderimi, the ancient connection roads or actually the donkey trails on Crete. At many spots in this beautiful area you are reminded of the rich history of Crete.
Walking to Kainourgio Horio Crete: Not far from our accommodation in Kokkini Hani are several traditional villages where hardly any tourists come. On Tuesday we walk with some of our guests through the mountainous landscape to Kainourgio Chorio. The way back is via Anopoli where another part of our guests follows a cooking workshop in an olive grove. Here, enough delicious Greek dishes are prepared so that hungry hikers can also join for lunch.
Snorkelling at Preveli South Crete: In most good travel guides of Crete is written about the palm forest at Preveli on the south coast. From the Kourtaliotiko gorge a river flows with refreshing water to the famous beach of Preveli and ends in the Libyan Sea. Cretan palm trees (phoenix theophrasti) and oleander bushes grow along the river, giving the area a tropical feel. After a walk in this beautiful area on Wednesday, we take some time for snorkelling.
A surprising walk on Crete: On Thursday we will walk in the beautiful nature of Crete. On the island there are endless options for a walk in nature; there are many gorges that we can walk in June, but a mountain hike on Crete is also worth doing at this time of the year. Where we go on Thursday, we will not comment on yet. We have many guests who return every year. Maybe they can recognize from the photos where we are.
Boat excursion Crete: If the weather allows it, there is a boat trip on Friday with the Zorbas boat to the bay of Agios Georgios in Hersonissos. We sail along the north coast of Crete and moor in the bay. In the bay you can snorkel to the cave in the water, swim, or laze on the deck of the boat. Spending a day on the water is written for many people on their wish list with activities on Crete.
