FUKUOKA - Fukuoka City Public Library
The facilities of Fukuoka city public library were more than expected. They had a well-organized reading rooms with all kind of periodicals. It was 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and I could see people ranging from kids to senior citizens. They also had a small cafe in the library.
And after all of those, the interior and exterior design which combines 19th century catholic church and museum, was the ultimate beauty that signified the old city of urban serenity.

Nagasaki Sports Center.mp4
This video can only be of interest to English-speaking crazy skaters like myself who enjoy skating at different rinks around the country and the world. Each rink has its own facilities, atmosphere, and characters (skaters/coaches). And these, of course, shift with different times of the day, days of the week, and seasons. My brief visits only can provide a glimpse of each venue.
In March of 2010, I skated at 7 different rinks in 6 Japanese cities from Northern Honshu to Western Kyushu. These trips were enabled by my Japan Rail Pass and allowed me to combine my interests of trains and skating. This video reports on my visit to Nagasaki Sports Center - the third stop in my series.
The night before, I arrived in Nagasaki and stayed overnight in a business hotel called Toyoko Inn (a chain, see toyoko-inn.com). A single room was only about $55 (small, but clean). They are very close to the Nagasaki JR Station. As the rink wouldn't open until 10am, my plan was to wake up early, take a practice walk from the hotel to the rink to be sure I knew its location, and then go over to the Atomic Bomb Museum which opens at 8:30am. Then I'd head back to the rink for some skating. Unfortunately, that plan didnt work out. I wanted to try to find the rink based on a map from the Internet. I couldn't identify key landmarks on the map and lost a lot of time walking back and forth looking for them. Finally, I gave up on the map and took out my GPS. I did walk to the rink and back, but it was much further than I had anticipated (and up quite a hill): about 43 minutes walk from the station and 35 minutes from the hotel. I'd recommend a bus to/from the station if you can get help finding the right one.
When I arrived at 10am, there was a sole speed skater on the ice. The ice surface was smooth enough, but as I skated around the ice would occasionally sound like it was experiencing major cracks. I envisioned dropping through to the third floor! I state in the video that the ice surface was listed as Olympic size on the Internet (it was obviously quite a bit smaller), but I was wrong. I later found it was actually listed at 1040 sq meters (Olympic size is about 1800 sq m).
As time passed, more student-aged skaters appeared. It was a Wednesday morning, but also during a school break period. I saw no one jumping or spinning during my visit, perhaps they would show up after normal school hours.
The price of skating here was ¥1500 for adults and ¥1300 and down for kids. Not sure of the skate rental fees. Hours were 10am to 8pm, and the rink was to close for the season on 3/31 (opens again next October). Phone number is 095-821-1231. The rink is found at the back of a bowling alley on the 4th floor of a pink building near the top of a local hill. The building has a sign (in Japanese only) that says Nagasaki Sports Center (長崎スポーツセンター).

CAMEROON Bounty - Bushfella at home
Centrally located in Africa, Cameroon enjoys the BLESSINGS of abundance of fruits and food. Yet even with this, we still import food, especially rice. I have to get Cameroon rice from my wif'e's village but not in the market where we live, in the South West region. Around our house, we enjoy the coming and goings of a variety of birds and small animals which we protect from humans and let them have our fruits. WE ARE BLESSED!!
