Last day in HOKKAIDO!!! We drive around the NATIONAL PARK KUSHIRO SHITSUGEN and observe the wetlands from various viewpoints and observatories, meet a cute but dead baby of Red-Crowned Cranes, a bunch of Ezo Deers, then observe the lotus ice phenomenon on the meandering KUSHIRO River and a lovely sunset at a farm hoping Cranes would fly over. But there's so much more to see in Hokkaido!! I already can't wait to go again!!

Very dangerous to enter the Marshlands by yourself as you may fall through the surface in a deep waterhole so we went with a very knowledgeable local guide, the owner of Hotel Taito in Tsurui Village. Similar to an African Safari guide, Mr. Wada knows all plants and the poisonous ones and the spurs left by wild animals on the trail, he knows who ate whom there the night before by just observing the surroundings. It was so cool to hear his stories and advices and to take pictures of this amazing environment. The area is frequented by brown ???? bears so we were advised how to deal with one should it come in our path ????????
Kushiro-shitsugen National Park
Located near Kushiro is the beautiful Shitsugen. This national park is best known for its wetlands ecosystems.
The marshland covers an area of 268 square kilometres and holds an abundance of flora and fauna including red-crowned cranes, foxes and deer.

Our new travel starts now and we are going to the cold northern island of Japan, HOKKAIDO! In order to get a bucket list check for the infamous Red-Crowned CRANE (Tancho) that you are supposed to see and photograph in winter with snow, preferably before February when it gets crowded with tourists coming to celebrate here their New Year. Many famous photographers come here, it is a dream destination!! So let's see how to get from Tokyo to TSURUI VILLAGE!! And yes, although I always wanted to come here, this trip was partially inspired by Starbucks, with the new mug that I like so much and sent to all my girlfriends ????

If you're thinking about visiting Japan, consider Hokkaido. It is the largest and northernmost prefecture of Japan and the country's leading producer of wheat, potatoes, beans, sugar beet, vegetables, and dairy products. Nature lovers should set their sights on East Hokkaido, which counts among its attractions Kushiro Shitsugen National Park, Lake Akan, Lake Mashu, and Shiretoko National Park. Winter lasts for almost half a year in East Hokkaido, from November to April. In February, drift ice from Russia arrives in its shores through the Sea of Okhotsk, bringing the temperature in nearby areas down to -10 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, for a few days in May, tiny phlox flowers reach full bloom, carpeting entire parks in pink. Hokkaido, Kushiro 釧路湿原
Kushiro, located in East Hokkaido, boasts of the largest wetlands in Japan. There are a few observatories in the area, well maintained wooden walkways, paved roads, a slow train line, and canoe tours where you can enjoy viewing various wild animals, and these huge grasslands.
We went there in early autumn, and saw white-tailed eagles, cranes, deer, and other creatures.
北海道の東岸に位置する釧路には、日本最大の湿原、釧路湿原があります。野性の生物を観察し、広大な草原を見渡すことのできる展望台や、木道、遊歩道などが整備されており、ゆったりと走るJR釧網線(ノロッコ号)、またはカヌーツアーなどで、湿原の自然を楽しむことができます。
私たちは初秋に訪れましたが、オジロワシ、タンチョウ、エゾシカなどを見ることができました。
