Arles 2015. Exposition Vincent Ferrané Bienvenue. Commanderie Sainte Luce. N°20
Bienvenue
A woman in a blue shirt, sweet-faced, brown-haired, moves about the city of Angers, its centre and its outskirts. She passes through these territories, perhaps she strays a bit, becoming the solitary narrator of an enigmatic and silent voyage. Thus, the action of Bienvenue takes place over a single sunny day, but in many places: urban or suburban; gardens, bridge, roads; a shopping centre’s immense parking garages, shops, supermarkets, escalators, and cafeterias. Through the gaze of this woman the spectator enters these spaces; the photographer follows in her footsteps. The city and its surroundings become a palimpsest, a tangle of intersections and encounters. Vincent Ferrané refers to what the anthropologist Marc Augé calls the ‘non-places’ of ‘supermodernity’: highways, airports, supermarkets, the places we go to for the needs of transport or consumption. But what is a non-place? A place on the margin, a place that doesn’t exist?
That is the question posed here, in every image. One thing seems certain: territories like this, offered to our modern world, are the very opposite of intimacy, the world embodied by the personage of Armelle, she who opens the way to a dreamy and Rousseau-inspired questioning. For in these non-places there reigns the anonymity of the crowd. And against that crowd-background, the photographer gives us a subjective point of reference which is a visual focal point: this personage, Armelle. It is she who reminds us that there is something else, somewhere else, places where, with intimacy recaptured, singularity would be possible and reflection have a meaning.
Armelle has no goal and allows herself to drift, in the style of the Situationists. We must, like her, make this experiment, slow ourselves down. What would happen then? Let us say that a story, any story, would become possible, opening new paths cutting across the old, new scrolls of circulation. In this undetermined wandering, one theme attracts our attention, at once a warning and the invitation to a poetic world: the Tapestry of the Apocalypse. Does this tapestry subtly allow the photographer to prophesise the end of a world, or to glimpse a summons to appeasement through art? In any event, there must be reintroduced, into our relationship with our environment, an existential and fecund dimension.
Through the technique used here, a dilation of time is effected: these are not fixed images, but photograms, caught up from within a sequential and fluid order. They are charged with a potentiality for fiction inherent in their latent duration and their appeal to the imagination, equally apparent in short video sequences like sections of time in motion. From this we can divine the image of a being slipping through the passages of time, like a visit to the museum where Armelle is seen side by side with a statue, symbol of time fixed for eternity.
