La Verkin Creek Trail
Full Blog with Photos:
The Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park receives far fewer visitors than the main Zion Canyon, but it is a stunning area full of red rock cliffs. The La Verkin Creek Trail travels through these canyons following Timber Creek down to La Verkin Creek. It then follows up the creek into the canyons taking you past the Kolob Arch, the second largest free-standing arch in the world. A great place to turn around is up to a wonderful slot canyon called Bear Trap Canyon that ends in a waterfall.
Zion National Park - Return to Hop Valley
Located off exit 40 on Interstate 15 in Utah, the La Verkin Creek Trail is the main through trail of the Kolob Canyons section of Zion. Starting at Lee Pass along the Kolob Canyons Road, this trail runs almost 11 miles in length, looping south around the Finger Canyons, then turning east to join up with La Verkin Creek. The Hop Valley Trail is a 6.5-mile stretch of trail that connects the Hop Valley Trailhead with the La Verkin Creek Trail and is part of the Trans-Zion Hike that allows backpackers to hike from the Kolob section all the way down to Angels Landing and into the main canyon.

THE KOLOB ARCH TRAIL.
Exit I-15 on exit 40 and go east on the Kolob Canyon Road, after the visitor center drive for 3.7 miles to the Lee Pass Trailhead. Park and jump on the La Verkin Creek Trail. The trail is mostly downhill for the next 7 miles. When you come the sign that says Kolob Arch to the left go to the left. The hike up the small canyon that leads to Kolob Arch is the most rugged part of the trail. The path is usually well marked, but a couple scramble points are marked with cairns. Keep in mind once you get to Kolob Arch your hike is only half way done (if you are going in and out). Returning to your car is the hard part of the trail, because now it’s all basically uphill.
Kolob Arch is not a good trail to get into hiking with. It is a great trail if you’re accustomed to long trails and varying conditions (stone, sand, inclines, declines, and stream crossing). It does offer great solitude. The views are not great until you get into Hop Valley, which is about 5.5 miles in on the hike. There are some great backpacking locations as you get deeper into the backcountry of Kolob Canyon and you can even connect over to the main section of Zion National Park. Make sure you got your permits!

Zion National Park Kolob Arch Trail Hike Zion National Park Kolob Arch Trail
Zion National Park Kolob Arch Trail Kolob Arch Trail is great but you need to be smart about it. There are campsites here for a reason. I drank
the water along trail but I do that most places. I doubt most people can carry enough water in the summer to hike this trail without at least filtering. The trails on this side of Zion are better for Joe Everyman, meaning the trail is not all up, flat, then all down. Less
people here is another big plus.

Hop Valley - Zion National Park
The trail begins from the Kolob Terrace Road and wanders through the open fields with wide open views of the surrounding rock formations. As you near Hop Valley, the trail starts its descent. The valley floor of Hop Valley is breathtaking with its flat sandy bottom and vertical walls rising on both sides. The trail is very sandy and well worn. The campsites are at the far end of the valley before the steep descent into La Verkin Creek. This trail is best in the spring, summer and fall. The trail typically has snow in the winter that can remain until early spring. Camping is permitted in designated sites only.
Kolob Canyons
Recorded June 2, 2019
The Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park is located 17 miles south of Cedar City. A five-mile scenic drive along the Kolob Canyons Road allows visitors to view the crimson canyons and gain access to various trails and scenic viewpoints. Here in the northwest corner of the park, narrow parallel box canyons are cut into the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, forming majestic peaks and 2,000 foot cliff walls.

Taylor Creek Hike in Kolob Canyons - Zion, Utah
Taylor Creek is located in the northern Kolab Canyons section of Zion National Park.
The trail up the Middle Fork of Taylor Creek takes you to the Double Arch Alcove, which are huge caverns within the massive rock cliff faces that line the canyon.
It is far less crowded than the Virgin River area of Zion, and therefore much more peaceful and serene
Most people stop at the arches where the established trail ends, but there is a scramble that continues another mile until the canyon ends at a huge seasonal waterfall.

Taylor Creek Trail to Double Arch Alcove - Zion National Park.
Double Arch Alcove is located 2.6 miles from Taylor Creek Trailhead in the Kolob Canyon section of Zion National Park. The Taylor Creek Trail follows Middle Fork through a narrow, high-walled canyon to a large grotto topped by a sandstone arch.
The Taylor Creek Trail features a lush riparian corridor framed by colorful rock formations all along its path. This lightly used trail is best in late May and early October when spring blooms and autumn colors peak.
Perennial water and higher elevations make Taylor Creek a good choice during busy summer months when temperatures soar and crowds swell in Zion Canyon:
The trail winds down from the parking area into the stream bed and turns right (east) up the south bank. Cottonwood, maple, oak, pinyon, juniper and ponderosa form a loose canopy over the trail. In .2 miles you'll be led over the creek, the first of many crossings up to the Larsen Cabin and North Fork - Middle Fork confluence (1.1 miles : 5,626'). Continue east along the Middle Fork.
In 1.5 miles the crimson walls of Tucupit Point (north - 7,698') and Paria Point (south - 7802') rise dramatically over the trail. The peak behind Tucupit is Horse Ranch Mountain (8,726'), the highest point in Zion National Park.
Travel intensifies through heavier brush, a good place to find signs of deer, turkey, skunk, coyote and mountain lion. Be particularly mindful of rattlesnakes in these cluttered sections.
Just past Fife Cabin (2.1 miles : 5,810') the trail drops into the creek and travels upstream a short distance. Entry-exit points to the creek are subtly marked but intuitively found.
Once back on the trail it soon fades and spills into a wide berth confined by tall canyon walls and boulders at the base of Double Arch Alcove (2.7 miles : 5,975').
While the alcove is immediately obvious, the arch above it is not; scramble back north in this atrium-like setting for a better look at both features.
The grotto is coated with striking colors drawn from minerals in the rock. Snow melt and seeping waters from above trickle over the grotto's ledge, forming mist and conditions that support hanging gardens. A very beautiful experience.

Kolob Canyons Utah: Zion National Park's Hidden Gem
The popular main section of Zion National Park is surely a thrill, but there are other areas of the park that are often overlooked by visitors. Kolob Canyons to the north of the main park is an example, and that's too bad. Driving the park's winding red (from embedded sandstone) road, is a thrill a minute as wide vistas of shockingly red cliffs, bold green trees, and bright blue skies (at least on the day we were there) combine to create unsurpassed natural masterpieces. There are challenging hiking trails, too. Larry Richardson created this video for RichardsonArtPhotographyStore.com using an Apple iPhone 7 and iMovie.

Kolab Canyon
Hoop Journal Diary #5
This is at the Double Arch Alcove in Kolab Canyon, Zion National Park. It was a bit of a hike in and 104 degrees outside, but inside the alcove it was about 20 degrees lower and laying on the rocks cooled us down completely. The depth of the canyon is impossible to capture in photos, and even being there in person, it was hard to really see how deep the cavern is.
Hooping here I was surrounded by sandstone rock walls from every direction, they were various shades of red and the skylight only could be seen by looking up. I focused on using the hoop as a lens, a way to connect with my surroundings, to focus in all the beauty as well as help me remember the details of my surroundings.
music by modest mouse- so much beauty in dirt
