Episode 18 - Nevada State Museum, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe
Northwestern Nevada is beautiful and there is a lot of history in the area. The Nevada State Museum in Carson City is an interesting museum with lots of exhibits from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. We drove up route 431 to Lake Tahoe which is very scenic. Stop by the Galena Creek Visitor’s Center is a partnership of Washoe County, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Great Basin Institute. They has very good information on the area and an amazing exhibit of stuffed birds out together by the Nevada Audubon Society.

100 Years of Nevada History - Part 2
The Story of the Nevada Historical Society
For the past 100 years, the Nevada Historical Society in Reno has been working hard to preserve the history of our state. Now, the Society is celebrating its Centennial Year with a special exhibition and tribute to the woman responsible for saving much of Nevadas history.
With Museum Director Peter Bandurraga as your guide, youll meet founding director Jeanne Elizabeth Wier, whose vision inspired the creation of the Society in 1904, and whose dogged determination moved the dream forward. Youll share her joys and heartaches as the dream became reality and took a firm hold.
Youll see many of the important artifacts and special treasures collected over the past century, as well as a wealth of historic photographs and archival material. The video also includes interviews conducted by Series Host Gwen Clancy with a range of visitors at the opening exhibit, to find out the relevance each finds at the Nevada Historical Society today.
The Nevada Historical Society, the states oldest museum, is located at 1650 N. Virginia Street in Reno, on the University of Nevada campus. Programs include an active exhibition schedule, lectures, docent-guided tours for students, and volunteer opportunities. The research room is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday. The Main Gallery and Museum Store are open Monday through Saturday.

300-acre Wild West ghost town is sold for $1.4million - 247 news
300-acre Wild West ghost town is sold for $1.4million - 247 news
California,ghost,town,tourist,hotspot,changes,hands,1,4million
A California ghost town from the 19th century will become a tourist hotspot with a music studio and observation deck after it sold for half a million dollars more than expected.Cerro Gordo, a long-abandoned mining town 200 miles north of Los Angeles, had been listed for $925,000 but has changed hands for $1.4million. The buyers are hospitality entrepreneur Brent Underwood and public relations chief Jon Bier, who purchased it from family owners who supported the duo's plans to transform the 300-acre Lone Pine property into a destination for tourists. The site has 22 buildings remaining including a well-preserved church which doubles as a theater, a hotel, a bunkhouse, and a superintendent's house.Co-owner Mr Underwood plans to move to the former mining town in August to oversee the transformation which will a further $1million or more, the New York Times reported. Mr Underwood, the founder of hostel HK Austin said: 'We might get quite a bit more done because there's not too many distractions when you're up miles away from anybody else. You very much feel like you're back in time. He told CNN: 'It isn't often you're entrusted to maintain such an interesting part of American history. The town is so rich in history and has impacted so many lives.' His business partner Mr Bier, the head of Jack Taylor PR, posted on Instagram to say: 'Apparently people like a good ghost story...or a bad one.' Share this article Share According to the town's website, smelters arrived to the site in 1869 and 'ultimately turned it into the largest producer of silver and lead in California.' Held by the same family for decades and only recently put on the market, the property expands over 300 acres of patented mining claims.Jake Rasmuson, of Bishop Real Estate, speaking prior to the sale, said: 'The site has been extremely well protected from diggers, artifact looters and Mother Nature herself.'Restoration has been undertaken on most of the buildings and the rest are in a state of protected arrested decay.'The site is historic as the first major mining camp south of the Sierra Nevada. Cerro Gordo is a privately-owned Mining Town located in the Owens Valley near Lone Pine, California. 'The town was the silver thread to Los Angeles, being partially responsible for its growth and economic development. For those looking to acquire a piece of American West, Cerro Gordo is for you.'

NEW TAHOE MARITIME MUSEUMS DOORS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
(May 27, 2008) After years of planning, fundraising, and recently, construction, the brand new Tahoe Maritime Museum opened its doors to the public over Memorial Day Weekend.
Follow completion of a four million dollar capital campaign established to build a new facility, the new Tahoe Maritime Museum in Homewood, CA. opened its doors to the public Saturday, May 24.
Hundreds of boating enthusiasts, contributors, donors and community members were on hand for a special preview of the museum Friday night, as well as for the official ribbon cutting and grand opening to the public on Saturday.
Celebrating the rich history of Tahoe and appealing to a wide variety of audiences, the Museum's new building includes interactive exhibits, a community gathering space and a children's activities area. Visitors can experience the interesting history of the Tahoe region, gain deeper insights into the historical uses of the lake over time and have fun socializing in the sun lit spaces of the two-story, 5,800 square foot building featuring high ceilings and an open floor plan.
Exhibits
The new Museum boasts an unsurpassed display of maritime artifacts including vessels with significant ties to Lake Tahoe, racing trophies, displays dedicated to classic Gar Woods and Chris Crafts as well as miniature toy engines and eye-catching photos. The first boat in the Museum's permanent collection, Shanghai, was actually rescued from the bottom of the Lake after more than 50 years of being submerged and is suspended from the second floor balcony. Impeccably restored classic wooden boats on display include Vent d'ete, the only sailboat in the Museum's collection; Godfather, a 1922 Chris Craft awarded Antique Boat of the Year at the Antique and Classic Boat Show in Clayton, NY in 1994; Miss Tessa, a 1930 Dodge that some may have seen at the 2007 Concours d'Elegance in Carnelian Bay; Ta Gah Yin Ga, a 1941 Chris Craft barrel back runabout; and Bobcat, a classic wooden boat common on Lake Tahoe in the 1950s. A sample of the Museum's extensive outboard motor collection is also on display and includes Eltos, Johnsons and a rare Indian motor, among others. A historic wood working bench and restoration display showcase Tahoe's rich tradition and craftsmanship. The Museum serves as a looking glass into the past by evoking images of Tahoe at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as visitors connect to Tahoe's unique and fascinating maritime history.
About the Museum
The Tahoe Maritime Museum's mission is to stimulate interest in and preserve watercraft and marine artifacts significant in Lake Tahoe's maritime history. Founded in 1987, the Museum is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that combines the best elements of heritage and history museums to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the community. The Museum is located at 5205 West Lake Blvd. in Homewood, CA. Summer hours of operation are 11am -- 5pm Thursday through Tuesday (the Museum is closed on Wednesdays). Admission is free for members and children under 12 years of age and $5 for others. For more information, call (530) 525-9253 or visit the Museum's remodeled website at
Native basket event at the Nevada Museum of Art
RENO, Nev. - In celebration of the blockbuster exhibition TAHOE: A Visual History, and to honor Nevada Day, the E. L. Wiegand Foundation presents a day of free activities at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery. Friday, October 30, 2015, visitors to the Museum will be treated to free admission all day from 10 am 6 pm. That afternoon, from noon until 4 pm, the public is invited to bring their Native American baskets to the Museum for analysis by a panel of basket experts.
As part of the exhibition, TAHOE: A Visual History, the Nevada Museum of Art has gathered the largest collection of Washoe baskets ever assembled in one place. This part of our region's history reveals that at the turn of the twentieth century a basket craze swept the West. As a result many people throughout the community possess a Washoe or other Native American basket for which they may be uncertain of the history. In celebration of Nevada's Native American culture, people are encouraged to bring their Native basket to the Museum, where a panel of prominent basket experts will help identify and describe the object's origins. Panelists include Brian Bibby, Marvin Cohodas, Catherine Fowler, Gene Hattori, and SueAnn Monteleone. Visitors are encouraged to bring as many baskets as they like. This free event takes place October 30, 2015, from noon until 4 pm.
Throughout the entire Friday, October 30, Nevada Day holiday, the Nevada Museum of Art offers free admission for all visitors. The Museum is open 10 am to 6 pm that day.
The Nevada Museum of Art has organized the first major art historical survey exhibition of one of America's most beloved landscapes. TAHOE: A Visual History spans over two centuries of cultural and creative production related to the second largest freshwater alpine lake in the United States and features more than 400 artworks by 175 painters, photographers, architects, basket weavers, and sculptors. A 488-page book by the same name, co-published with Skira Rizzoli and distributed by Random House, accompanies the exhibition.
TAHOE: A Visual History is organized by the Nevada Museum of Art and curated by Ann M. Wolfe. It is on view through January 10, 2016 exclusively at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery located at 160 West Liberty Street in downtown Reno, Nev.
E. L. Wiegand Foundation Presents Nevada Day Free Admission and Bring Your Native Baskets to the Museum is exclusively sponsored by the E. L. Wiegand Foundation.

Driving through Beatty, Nevada
Beatty (pronounced BAY-dee) is an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP) along the Amargosa River in Nye County in the U.S. state of Nevada. U.S. Route 95 runs through the CDP, which lies between Tonopah, about 90 miles (140 km) to the north, and Las Vegas, about 120 miles (190 km) to the southeast. State Route 374 connects Beatty to Death Valley National Park, about 8 miles (13 km) to the west.
Before the arrival of non-indigenous people in the 19th century, the region was home to groups of Western Shoshone. Established in 1905, the community was named after Montillus (Montillion) Murray Old Man Beatty, who settled on a ranch in the Oasis Valley in 1896 and became Beatty's first postmaster. With the arrival of the Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad in 1905, the CDP became a railway center for the Bullfrog Mining District, including mining towns such as nearby Rhyolite.[2] Starting in the 1940s, Nellis Air Force Base and other federal installations contributed to the town's economy as did tourism related to Death Valley National Park and the rise of Las Vegas as an entertainment center.
Beatty is home to the Beatty Museum and Historical Society and to businesses catering to tourist travel. The ghost town of Rhyolite and the Goldwell Open Air Museum (a sculpture park), are both about 4 miles (6 km) to the west, and Yucca Mountain and the Nevada Test Site are about 18 miles (29 km) to the east.

Disability History Video Exhibit Timeline
The Disability History Exhibit was created by Advocating Change Together as a museum quality display. Twenty three beautifully crafted panels bring viewers through an illustrated timeline showing society’s attitudes and how they affect the lives of people with disabilities. Video versions of each panel were created by Portland Community College Disability Services in partnership with our Multimedia Program. The videos feature the voices of our students and are all captioned. Note that an accessible html version of the exhibit is also available online.
