Snorkeling Peanut Island | Palm Beach Shores 2019
Peanut Island is a 79-acre (0.32 km2) island at the mouth of the Lake Worth Inlet in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The island was created by dredging-related projects in 1918 which also created the inlet and the Port of Palm Beach.
Originally named Inlet Island, the island was renamed Peanut Island for a planned peanut oil-shipping operation which failed in 1946. A $13 million USD renovation on the island in 2005 resulted in Peanut Island Park including camp sites, a pier, and a man-made reef. It measures well maintained paths that encircle the island, along with lovely gardens and picnic sites.
The island also was the location of a blast shelter built in secret for President John F. Kennedy shortly after his 1960 election. Kennedy often spent winters in nearby Palm Beach, Florida. The shelter, Detachment Hotel, was open for tours for several years, but was closed in October 2017.

Discover Riviera Beach, Florida | Singer Island |The Palm Beaches
Riviera Beach, Florida is known as the Gateway to the Caribbean. Discover what makes Riviera Beach and Singer Island so unique in The Palm Beaches | Palm Beach County.
The beautiful beaches on Singer Island and bustling Port of Palm Beach make this city more than unique.
It’s a spectacular sight driving east over the Blue Heron Bridge on Singer Island. Straight ahead is the deep-blue Atlantic Ocean. This is where you can enjoy a variety of eateries, all facing the lengthy Municipal Beach. Make sure to look for parasailers gliding above the ocean.
On your right is Peanut Island, usually surrounded by all kinds of boats, along with cruise ships passing by on their way out to sea from the Port of Palm Beach. On the left are beachfront buildings, and then off in the distance is the wondrous John MacArthur Beach State Park. Best of all – right underneath the bridge, believe it or not – is one of the most famed diving and snorkeling locales in the world. Watch as colorful sea life make their way through the nearby Palm Beach Inlet.
Back over the bridge, Rivera Beach Marina Village offers the boater in you a place to dock or charter your next deep-sea fishing trip. In the Village, also find restaurants and a weekly year-round Green & Artisan Market in the Marina’s Event Center. Right next to the Port is Manatee Lagoon – An FPL Eco-Discovery Center, a dedicated viewing are for the famous “sea cows.”

Snorkeling In The Palm Beaches
If putting on the whole diving apparatus isn’t really your thing, no worries. Because when you go snorkeling in The Palm Beaches, our panoramic underwater scene is clear as can be.
With 47 miles of beachfront, any day out on the water means it’s snorkeling time. Put on that mask to check out remarkable snorkel sites close to shore. Keep in mind you can go snorkeling at all our beaches, but we’ve created a list of 10 Beautiful Places to start exploring. Splash down into the waves right from the sand or take a boat tour and drop in.
Doing the Snorkeling Trail, Selfie Trail, Peanut & Singer Island
When it comes to snorkeling, the star of the show is Phil Foster Park in Rivera Beach. An 800-foot long tract of artificial reef made with 600 tons of rock boulders. It’s all part of The Palm Beaches’ Snorkeling Trail, directly under Blue Heron Bridge where the water is unbelievably clear. Now, once in the water, make stop on our Selfie Trail, and tag it with #thepalmbeaches.
Look up from the water to see Peanut Island. It’s across from Phil Foster Park. It has an incredible history, from crazy Cold-War presidential bunkers and a long-time Coast Guard base. Nowadays, you’ll find a surprising snorkeling lagoon. Ah, don’t be alarmed if a sea cow goes by you, a manatee that is. These easy-going giants are attracted to warm water during winter months, quite a few can be seen from viewing spots at Manatee Lagoon.
Ocean Reef Park sits on Singer Island. Its beach is well-known for having first-rate water conditions, so the snorkeling is excellent. A little further up on A1A, exploring John D. MacArthur Beach State Park is a must. With big rock outcroppings forming a reef right at the water’s edge, find great sights without needing a boat or long swim. Also from MacArthur, make time to canoe or kayak Lake Worth Lagoon – it’s amazing.
See Natural and Artificial Reefs . . . then a Shipwreck
The South Inlet Park in Boca Raton has a superb natural reef about 175 feet off the beach. The reef starts in and around the park’s jetty, but be careful of passing boats. Just up the road from South Inlet, is the Red Reef Park. The park has an artificial reef resting close to shore. It’s a fine opportunity for beginners and kids alike. Ocean Inlet Park, near the mouth of the Boynton Beach Inlet, presents excellent snorkeling around various rock piles.
When it comes to wrecks, with one about 500 feet off Delray Beach Municipal Beach. The S.S. Inchulva went down a storm back in 1903, the nearly 400-foot freighter rest only about 20 feet down.
Secluded Snorkeling
Two local beaches are a little more off the beaten path, Coral Cove Park in Jupiter and Gulfstream Park in the town of Gulf Stream. Both offer you smaller crowds and time to scout the tremendous rocks and reefs.

Army Corp of Engineers survey the inlet of the Port of Palm Beach
This video is of the Army Corp of Engineers surveying the inlet channel of the Port of Palm Beach. I met with some members of the Army Corp of Engineers on 10/20/2014. This was in response to an emergency call from the Port District on 10/17/2014 concerning shoaling in the channel of our sea port.
At that time the concern was both environmental, and commercial.
Environmental, from the perspective that sand washes from north to south along our sea shore while the Gulf Stream travels from south to north. This southward movement of sand along our sea coast threatens both to close our channel, which, in essence would put this International Sea Port out of business, and with the closure of the inlet, the sea grasses and marine life as we know it, would be threatened due to the drop of the salinity of the lake water, and because of the backup of the run-off from the common elements of an industrialized population of an agricultural community.
In addition to these problems, our power plant may not be able to sustain the cooling of its generators which may cause electrical shortages within our growing population if our vintage sand pump does not continue to work. In this video you will note the sand pumping dredge, the servicing ships to carry equipment for the sand pumping and dredging operation, and the divers surveying the inlet channel of our international sea port.
I have written these documentations because if we do not keep up with the future we will be left in the past. Quite frankly, our sand pump and Sea Port is becoming structurally obsolete. Our channel is also becoming functionally obsolete compared to today’s standards. We have been dredging on a regular basis for the last couple of years. Our sand pumping equipment has been patched in two, three, or more areas since the Hurricanes of 2004 and 2005.
Eventually things wear out, and if we become unable to support the expected growth of Tropical Shipping, Florida Crystal, and other business concerns of the Port District, and the continental growth of the United States that ship through our Sea Port we will lose our business, our jobs, and wellbeing to Port St. Lucie, Port Miami, or Port Everglades.
Therefore it seems essential to me to renew our sand pump, deepen our channel, and turning basin, and build the prospected Inland Port for the future, our people, and our Country.
The last time our channel was deepened was in 1963 taking the mean water depth to 33. Since then our improvements have kept up with the times, but have not prepared for the future. The proposed new depth which I also proposed when I ran for Commissioner of the Port of Palm Beach is 39 feet, and with a proposed width increase of 50 feet. I also proposed to connect I-95 to Martin Luther King Jr. St. also known as the Purple Heart Highway, and Beeline Highway. These improvements along with the construction of the Inland Port also proposed by both Commissioner Wayne Richards, and myself should insure the continued existence of the shores of Palm Beach, the sea life of Lake Worth, more jobs in the Port’s district, plus a bright future for Palm Beach County.
George Black Jr. (editor/staff writer of the Port of Palm Beach Post, Politician, business man.)
The information for this report was obtained primarily from documents of the Port of Palm Beach, and also sources such as the Army Corp of Engineers, whether data, marine studies, economic studies, etc.

Hands Across the Sand Aerial Video - Lake Worth Public Beach : 2/13/2010
In Florida on Saturday, February 13, 2010, a statewide gathering against offshore oil drilling occurred. Thousands of Floridians representing 60 towns and cities and over 90 beaches joined hands to protest the efforts by the Florida Legislature and the US Congress to lift the ban on oil drilling in the near and off shores of Florida. Florida's Hands Across The Sand event was the largest gathering in the history of Florida united against oil drilling. Thousands joined hands from Jacksonville to Miami Beach and Key West to Pensacola Beach, each against oil drilling in Florida's waters. Surfrider Foundation Palm Beach County Chapter hosted the event at the Lake Worth Public Beach with a turnout of 350+ people including representatives from several environmental organizations, and numerous politicians from local, county, and state offices.

South Side of Jetty at Port of Palm Beach
After kayaking out to the inlet at the Port of Palm Beach we beached our kayaks on the protected beach that is on the south side of the and snorkeled along the jetty. Only a few easily to avoid Moon jellyfish so we were able to finally able to snorkel without wearing our rash guards.
