West Tisbury Massachusetts (MA) Real Estate Tour
Tour West Tisbury, MA neighborhoods, condominium developments, subdivisions, schools, landmarks, recreational areas, and town offices.
West Tisbury, Massachusetts sits on beautiful Martha's Vineyard, the world-renowned island and vacation spot off the coast of Massachusetts. West Tisbury has all the hallmarks of a classic New England village, with a white church, general store, post office, old mill, rustic countryside farms and sparkling ponds.
It was the rushing streams of the area that originally attracted settlers to West Tisbury, as there was no stream in nearby Edgartown strong enough to dam for a water wheel. The early grist mills gave way in 1847 to the manufacture of satinet, a heavy fabric for whalemen's jackets made from island wool.
The Congregational church on State Road is always open to visitors. Solid and settled as it now looks, even this structure did not escape the Islanders' penchant for moving buildings around. The original churchyard, where the first settlers of the town are buried, is about a quarter of a mile down the road. Near the church is the Dukes County Academy building, now West Tisbury's Town Hall. Next to that is the famous old Agricultural Hall, site of the Farmer's Market and other events in the summer.
Several of West Tisbury's antique homes were originally built as inns, back when a trip from the down-island ports to Gay Head or Chilmark was a long haul over sandy roads. Across the little pond from the old inn is a house built by the son of Miles Standish in 1668. Captains owned the largest houses in town, and some of the finest are still occupied by their descendants. Several captains' houses can be found on Music Street, given its name after a number of its families purchased pianos with new whaling money.
The Lambert's Cove settlement has its share of fine homes and a charming white church. The cove was once a place of anchorage for the town of West Tisbury. The area housed clay works, salt works (needed for the herring which were exported), and extensive trap fishing operations. All this has since vanished. Even the road to the harbor is gone. A woodland path leads to the beach, which is now set aside for year-round and summer residents of West Tisbury.
Other points of interest include the Cedar Tree Neck Nature Preserve and the Christiantown Memorial to the Praying Indians. Cedar Tree Neck may be reached from the Indian Hill Road. It is a matchless piece of unspoiled Vineyard woods with a freshwater pond and brooks, bounded by North Shore Beach. Picnics, fishing, and bathing are not permitted here, but there are marked trails for those who appreciate the opportunity to watch birds, follow woodland paths, and walk along a quiet shore. The Memorial is located off Christiantown Road. Here one may see a tiny chapel, a pulpit rock where services were held for the Wampanoag Indians in the 17th century, and the rough small burial stones of these first converts. The Martha's Vineyard Garden Club has planted a wildflower garden nearby. For other town tours visit . For towns in MA visit . For MA relocation information go to . For a MA MLS map search visit .

West Tisbury, Massachusetts on the island of Martha's Vineyard
FOR MORE INFORMATION: - Time slips away easily in West Tisbury. The clock in the church tower is hand-wound, and strikes the hour by day and night. Music Street, in the heart of the village, got its name from the sound of the pianos brought back by the whaling captains and heard through open windows 150 years ago. The tiny police station by the Mill Pond is just as described in the mystery books of 13th generation town resident Cynthia Riggs. Across the street, an old country store, long since closed, collapses in on itself. In the town cemetery, visitors leave small toy birds on the grave of 19th century poet Nancy Luce, who kept chickens as household pets.
You can definitely get away from it all in West Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard's traditional farming community. The porch at Alley's General Store, in the heart of the village, is the place to watch the day go by. Pick up a copy of the Broadside, for one thin dime, and find out what the locals are talking about the single sheet, front-and-back paper is a distinctive blend of news and speculation, and is put out by a West Tisbury couple who seem to know and hear everything.

- Where time stood still - A farm with farm house, guesthouse, barn and other out-building that has been captured in a time capsule representing the Vineyard as it was generations ago. The buildings and surrounding farm land have been passionately restored, enjoyed and maintained. The original site of Norton Farm in West Tisbury, the farmhouse, barn, and two additional buildings were originally built around 1800 when it was part of the natural landscape of the Island. The farm was then purchased by the current owner, who despite the deteriorated condition of the buildings, became totally enchanted by the setting and landscape. In the 1990's the restoration process started and was being managed by a craftsman who had restored buildings in Gettysburg. Driving along Indian Hill with its rolling fields, stables and stone walls is a treat in itself. As you follow the winding road and take the last turn you are facing a vista of rolling hills, a stand of cedar trees that look like the original site of an Andrew Wyeth painting. The buildings are perfectly located on the landscape; the tree shadows continually move as the day extends and at the back of the barn is a perfect small pond where peepers sound off in the evening. A variety of birds and other wildlife are your neighbors. A path that starts along the side of the barn leads you to the shore of Vineyard Sound. This is an exceptional property that will speak for itself and to you when you visit.

Video of 56 Boghouse Way | West Tisbury | Martha's Vineyard, Massachsuetts real estate & homes
- Coming to the Vineyard is a luxurious experience. Coming to 56 Boghouse Way on the Vineyard makes it even more magical. The winding drive from Lambert's Cove Road through oaks, cedars and historic stone walls brings you to this oasis where R&R are the only option. Four plus bedrooms with good separation provide room for all and an open common area with fireplace and direct access to an extensive deck for daily gatherings. The Upper Lambert's Cove area contains hilly ranges which are in stark contrast to the relatively flat land of the Vineyard which was scraped by glacial activity that separated Martha's Vineyard from the mainland some 10,000 years ago. Boghouse Way has been cleared with great sensitivity exposing the swales and hollows of the contour typical of this distinctive area. And then there is the best part, the walk to the water's edge to the sweeping views of the Sound and Elizabeth Islands. A special property for special owners. It is difficult to capture this property in prose and pictures. Only a visit will demonstrate how special it is.

Driving East Chop Drive, Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard (Wampanoag: Noepe, /mɑːr.ðəz.viːnjʊd/, often called just the Vineyard) is an island located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts that is known for being an affluent summer colony. It includes the smaller Chappaquiddick Island which is usually connected to the Vineyard, though storms and hurricanes have been known to separate the two. The last such separation of the islands was in 2007 and the two islands are again connected as of April 2, 2015.
It is the 58th largest island in the United States, with a land area of 100 square miles (260 km2), and the third largest on the East Coast of the United States, after Long Island and Mount Desert Island. The island constitutes the bulk of Dukes County, Massachusetts, which also includes the Elizabeth Islands and the island of Nomans Land.
The Vineyard was home to one of the earliest known deaf communities in the United States; consequently, a special sign language developed on the island called Martha's Vineyard Sign Language (MVSL).
The 2010 census reported a year-round population of 16,535 residents, although the summer population can swell to more than 100,000 people. About 56% of the Vineyard's 14,621 homes are seasonally occupied.
Martha's Vineyard is primarily known as a summer colony, and it is only accessible by boat and air. However, its year-round population has considerably increased since the 1960s. The island's year-round population increased about a third each decade from 1970 to 2000, for a total of 145% or about 3 to 4% per year (46%, 30%, and 29% in each respective decade). The population of the Vineyard was 14,901 in the 2000 Census and was estimated at 15,582 in 2004. (Dukes County was 14,987 in 2000 and 15,669 in 2004). Dukes County includes the six towns on Martha's Vineyard and Gosnold; it increased by more than 10 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to Census data released in 2011, gaining nearly 1,548 residents. The Island's population increased from 14,987 to 16,535.
A study by the Martha's Vineyard Commission found that the cost of living on the island is 60% higher than the national average, and housing prices are 96% higher.[7] A study of housing needs by the Commission found that the average weekly wage on Martha's Vineyard was 71% of the state average, the median home price was 54% above the state's and the median rent exceeded the state's by 17%.
