History In Lowell The Labor Movement in Lawrence MA
This episode of History in Lowell was produced at LTC in January 2018. A conversation between Maritza Grooms of Girls, Inc. and Prof. Robert Forrant from UMass Lowell about the history of the labor movement in nearby city, Lawrence.
Bread & Roses, Then & Now; Lawrence & the 1912 Strike
The Bread & Roses strike of 1912 in Lawrence was one of the largest and most important labor events in history, but few people today can relate with it physically. I made this film back in 2011 as part of a UMass Lowell course in conjunction with the Lawrence Centennial Committee and the Lawrence Heritage Museum, with the idea that it might be possible to connect people to the strike through the city itself; Lawrence is only eight square miles, and every square foot is soaked in history.
After combing through archives and locating original photographs from the strike, I researched where they were originally taken (not easy when many shots lacked captions and entire streets had changed shape), and then I did my best to recapture each image from the same spot, almost exactly 100 years later.
This video is currently being used by the Lawrence Public Library for educational and research purposes; the Heritage Museum has a copy as well. This video was one of two that I produced on a DVD; the other is Spanish-language, given the large Hispanic population of Lawrence today. The other video can be found on my YouTube channel.
Since the production of this film in 2011, I have been informed that the Franco Belgian Hall was turned into a nightclub; I have not had a chance to verify this and the owner has not responded to my queries.
A note about the sound/quality: For some reason, the quality got a bit fuzzy when I uploaded this, not much I can do about that. I suggest any video size except full-screen, as some of the text can be difficult to read. Also, the sound for the final third of the film is now very loud; you have been warned...

Origins of the Military-Industrial Complex
Daniel Else explored the results of his year-long inquiry into the organizational underpinnings of that military technological revolution of the 1940s and 1950s. By mining the Library's resources, Else traced the evolving relationship between science and the federal government leading to the creation of the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD) in 1941. A temporary wartime agency, OSRD mobilized the nation's academic and industrial technological resources in support of the war effort, and in so doing profoundly altered the linkages between science and engineering, industry, and government. Else explored those wartime changes and outline their impact, still seen and felt today more than seven decades after V-J Day.
Speaker Biography: Daniel Else was a specialist in national defense in the Congressional Research Service in the Library of Congress and the 2016 Kluge Staff Fellow at the Library's John W. Kluge Center.
