12 Places to Visit in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam | Vlog #32
Hey, guys. What is goood?
These are the 12 Places I've visited in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. These are also my highly recommended ones to visit. Though I haven't been to Landmark 81 - tallest building in Vietnam, I suggest you go there too, along with the Bitexco Tower. You can also have a Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels Day Tour from Ho Chi Minh City and they are pretty affordable too.
I enjoyed my stay in Ho Chi Minh City and I will definitely be back.

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 6.232.940 (2008) [1], is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, with a few brief interruptions, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85Coordinates: 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85, 1760 km (1094 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon.
On May 29 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay province, Vinh Phuc's Me Linh district and 4 communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1 2008[2]. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions[3] with the new population being 6,232,940[3]. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vietnamese: Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020[4]. October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city.
As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved.[10]
Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples.[11]
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.
Some others prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1070; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900 year old citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Dinh square. [12]
A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang) in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are small boats for hire and a floating restaurant.
Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street), The Grand Opera House, The State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), The Presidential Palace (formerly Place of The Governor-General of French Indochina), the cathédrale St-Joseph, and historic hotel Sofitel Metropole.

Hoan Kiem District 9/25/2016
Hanoi, Vietnam
September 25, 2016
The Hoan Kiem District is the city’s major commercial hub and a main tourist destination. Also known as Hanoi’s Old Quarter, it the oldest neighborhood in the city. The shop-houses lining its ancient commercial streets were constructed over a century ago in colonial architecture. Visitors can find plenty of cafés, bars, restaurants, bakeries, boutique shops and art galleries in this popular historical area.
It is located near Hoan Kiem Lake and the streets are packed with motor riders, sidewalk vendors and strollers out for a feel of the rich old Vietnamese customs and traditions.

VIETNAM: CLINTON ARRIVES IN HANOI FOR VISIT
English/Nat
President Clinton on Thursday became the first U-S president to visit Hanoi, capital of the communist country that America could not defeat 25 years ago.
Although the official welcoming ceremony would not occur until Friday, thousands of Vietnamese gathered on the road from the airport and thousands more convened in front of his hotel to get a glimpse of their American guest.
People in the crowd - most seemed to be under 30 - waved and applauded as Clinton's limousine passed just before midnight.
At the airport, about a dozen military officials lined a fringed red carpet to greet Clinton.
With his wife already in the city, Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea, were each handed a bouquet by a woman in a traditional tunic and pants outfit called an ao dai.
The president chatted with Pete Peterson, a former POW who is America's ambassador to Vietnam, and his wife, Vietnam native Vi Le.
Clinton was accompanied on his three-day trip by scores of American business executives eager to open plants and sell goods to this country of 78 (M) million.
He also was welcomed by Vietnam's foreign minister Nguyen Dy Nien and trade minister Vu Khoan.
During his stay, Clinton planned to discuss the Vietnamese-aided effort to recover the remains of Americans missing in action, the improvement of human rights in Vietnam, and U-S investment projects.
Talk of trade would be mixed with memories of the Vietnam War.
As a young man, Clinton believed the war was wrong and he demonstrated against it, writing in 1969 that it was a conflict he opposed and despised.
He avoided the draft, although he ultimately accepted it and drew a lottery number that spared him induction.
The war itself ended with America's withdrawal in 1973, followed two years later by the collapse of the South Vietnamese government the United States had sought to preserve.
En route to Vietnam, Clinton said the best way to honour the Americans and Vietnamese who died in the war is to find a way to build a better future and that's what we're trying to do.
Clinton is the third U-S president to visit Vietnam, and the first since the fall of the South and reunification under communist rule.
Lyndon B. Johnson went to Vietnam twice as president and Richard M. Nixon once, in 1969.
First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton had arrived in Vietnam earlier in the day from Israel, where she delivered a eulogy at the funeral of Leah Rabin, widow of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
She toured an art gallery and went shopping on Hang Gai street, famed for a string of shops offering everything from souvenirs to high-quality silk products.
On Friday and Saturday, she planned to meet with women's groups in and around Hanoi and to deliver an address in Ho Chi Minh City in the south, formerly known as Saigon.
President Clinton arrived from the sultanate of Brunei.
He spent Thursday in conferences with Pacific Rim leaders, who closed out the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum by calling for a new round of global trade talks.
He also held separate, private meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori and Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

A Vietnamese Painter Remembers
Vietnam has come a long way since the US bombings of Hanoi in the late 196o's nearly shattered the entire infrastructure.
Today the country, though still under one party rule, is an economic powerhouse in Southeast Asia. Painter Maj Trang, daughter of the official portrait painter of leader Ho Chi Minh was a teenager in Hanoi living in fear, as the bombs fell daily for five long years. In 1990 Mai Trang left her homeland and began a new life in Sweden....a painter, like her father. and brothers.
Ric Wasserman has the story
Water Puppet Show at Museum of Vietnamese History in Saigon
The Vietnamese History Museum is housed in a building sited in the large park and zoo located at the end of Le Duan Street. The galleries are all on a single floor, although the levels change some between one hall and another through the circular plan.
Each gallery focuses on a different era of Vietnamese history, starting with the stone age and proceeding up through the French colonial period as you move clockwise through the building. Of particular interest are some sandstone sculptures from the seventh and eighth centuries, Roman coins from the second century and a collection of cannons from Hue in the nineteenth century.
The museum also hosts special exhibits. When I visited, the rotunda hosted a collection of wooden imperial furniture. There's also a small water puppet theater that puts on short shows, but nothing like the national water puppets theater in Hanoi.

14 Ton That Dam - Trading Places
In today's Saigon, apartments are just not a place to live. Beneath their weather-beaten facades is often a unique ecosystem of homes, shops, whimsical cafes, art galleries, hip hangouts and more.
In the face of frequent rumors about the imminent demise of these decades-old Saigon relics, we felt the need to tell their stories before it's too late, starting with District 1's iconic 42 Nguyen Hue and 14 Ton That Dam.
A series by Saigoneer and RICE.
