Legend Rock State Petroglyph Site
No one knows which prehistoric peoples drew the petroglyphs on the sides of these sandstone cliffs, but some are estimated to be 5,200 to 6,000 years old. Others may be as recent as the early 19th century. Thought to be associated with ritual healing, they are similar to those found in the Great Basin, the Columbia Plateau, the American southwest and eastern California. The 283 drawings include images of elk, deer, bison and other animals as well as human forms. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the Legend Rock Site is one of the most fragile in the state parks system. Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is celebrating its' 75th Anniversary. wyoparks.org.

Exploring Wyoming - White Mountain Indian Petroglyph Hand Formations
These petroglyphs are at White Mountain just north east of Rock Springs Wyoming. Very well preserved, it's a neat walk back in time! These particular indentations in the rock are handprints from Indians. I understand that they use to bring the women who were in labor here to birth their babies. These were the hand holds on the rock when they were giving birth.

Wyoming's Historic State Bath House and Hot Springs State Park - Thermopolis, Wyoming
This area was such a fun overnight destination. The day we arrived we parked near the entrance of the Wyoming State Historic Bath House. There is a huge public park, hot springs fountain, beautiful rock formations and a walking path in the area. After reading about the history of the TeePee Fountain, we explored the colorful terraces along the Big Horn River. Here water from the mineral hot springs flows into the free public bath house at a constant 135 degrees. Choose from an indoor or outdoor pool and enjoy a free 20 minute soak. One word of advice - wear a swimming suit that you don't mind having smell like sulfur! If you'd rather splash in the river, there was a boat dock and shallow water entry on the Big Horn River by the terraces.

White Mt. Petroglyphs - WY Cultural Geology
Evidence of native people, who inhabited the Green River Basin about 1,000 to 1,500 years ago, can be seen in the soft sandstone of the Wasatch Formation. The White Mountain Petroglyph site, near Rock Springs, Wyoming, contains rock art depicting hundreds of animals and people. From bison and bear, to horses and warriors. These petroglyphys have a deep cultural and spiritual significance to the early peoples who created them. This rock art serves as a museum on the sandstone cliff, and for us to appreciate our past cultures and how people used the natural landscape to depict their cultural beliefs and inspirations.

The pool is pretty deep, maybe 12 feet or so. However, there is a huge hole just under the dive that has a natural look about it. I'm not really sure how deep it goes!

Wyoming Petroglyphs
This site is called the White Mountain Petroglyphs. Located in SW Wyoming, in the deserts of Sweetwater County. Some of these images date back 1000 years, when the Plains and Great Basin Indians hunted buffalo and elk, in this area. One of the caves still has soot from torches, covering the ceiling. Just past that cave, notice the carving of the Indian, in full head dress, running on a horse! The audio is mostly non-existent..unless you like the WIND! This Petroglyph feature is on federal land (BLM), which is why the fence protects it. Otherwise, your in the middle of nowhere.
