Come along with us as we take a scenic drive through the Wind River Canyon in Wyoming on U.S. Highway 20. We’re just southeast of Yellowstone on the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway.
As we wind through the canyon, you can see the spectacular rock walls rising 2,500 vertical feet on either side of us. These are some of the oldest rock formations in the world, dating back to the Precambrian period, more than 2.9 billion years ago!

This Stretch of road is located between Thermopolis and Shoshoni in the heart of Wyoming.

It is located to Yellowstone National Park, between the towns of Shoshoni and Thermopolis. On US Hwy 20, on 16 miles, along Bighorn River and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad line.

The hightway travel through the canyon, at times level with the canyon floor.
The southern mouth of the canyon is near the Boysen Dam in Boysen State Park.
From south to north, the canyon crosses an area of complex faulting, then narrows as it descends into Precambrian rocks at three road tunnels.

March 7th 2015, I took my son and his friend from Casper, WY to Thermopolis, WY to swim in the Hot Spring swimming pool called the Star Plunge. We drove through the Wind River Canyon and I created this video for everyone to enjoy.

Bighorn River at Thermopolis, WY
We had a road trip to Laramie, WY. On the way back, first we drove toward Thermopolis, WY. Along the way, we passed Boysen Reservoir, Wind River Canyon, and Wedding of Water - all the upper sources of Bighorn River in MT. Then at Thermopolis, we stopped by Hot Spring State Park. This feature is as impressive as Mammoth Hot Springs system in Yellowstone National Park. Then we spotted a huge flock of trout, including some big ones!!, just by the base, where a little stream from the hot spring also merges into the river.
We bet the river temperature remains in a colder side and trout would find this spot comfortable. We don't know the fishing regulations for this particular spot but we don't really see any signs of active fishing (foot prints, abandoned bobber, etc). We didn't carry our fishing gears anyway so we didn't worry of getting ticketed ;-)

Wind River Canyon - Wyoming
A drive through Wind River Canyon near Thermopolis, Wyoming. The drive is northbound on US Hwy 20 from Boysen Reservoir to Thermopolis in August 2019.
Wind River Canyon is a scenic Wyoming canyon on the Wind River. It is located between the towns of Shoshoni and Thermopolis and is a popular stop for visitors to Yellowstone National Park. It is accessible by U.S. Highway 20 and Wyoming Highway 789. It was designated as a Wyoming Scenic Byway in 2005.
U.S. 20/Wyo 789 travel through the canyon, at times level with the canyon floor. The scenic route offers views of the canyon and landmark natural structures like the Chimney Rock. The canyon is at times as much as 2,500 feet deep. The change in elevation between the Bighorn Basin and the Wind River Basin is about 300 feet (91 m).
The southern mouth of the canyon is near the Boysen Dam in Boysen State Park several miles north of, and about half a mile east of, the state park's borders with the Wind River Indian Reservation. The canyon includes a number of homes along the highway and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad line. The north end of the canyon is at the Wedding of the Waters, where the Wind becomes the Bighorn River. The Scenic Byway continues for several miles through Thermopolis and ends at T Hill on the north end of that town in Hot Springs State Park.
The Wind and Big Horn flow north out of Boysen Reservoir, through the canyon, into Thermopolis, and onward to points north.

Drive through Wind River Canyon in Wyoming
Drive through Wind River Canyon in Wyoming from Thermopolis to Shoshoni Wyoming. This is a wonderful vacation location or just a scenic drive. Drive slowly and if it’s raining watch for falling rocks. Plan to stop at one of the many scenic pullouts. If you get lucky you will get to see a train going through the tunnel.
The main camera was a GitUp F1 and the closer shots were from a GoPro Hero 5 black. Both cameras we on suction cup mounts on my windshield so there’s a bit of unwanted reflection in the glass. I’m workin on a fix for that.
If you ever have a chance to go there it’s a beautiful drive. If you’re headed up to Cody or Yellowstone from Casper it a great route.

The Wind River Canyon is located between Shoshoni and Thermopolis Wyoming. The highway runs along the east side of the Bighorn River and train tracks run along the west side.
The river is fun to simply watch and the mountains are gorgeous.
There were a few recent rock slides and workers were still cleaning up the area. Watch for Falling Rocks.

Bahnstrecke Shoshoni-Thermopolis-Worland/WY - Wind River Canyon
Die ursprüngliche Tagesplanung am 13.04.12 bestand darin, die Hot Springs in Thermopolis zu besuchen. Auf der Fahrt warfen wir einen Blick auf die Bahnstrecke, welche doch als selten befahren eingestuft werden könnte. Somit rechneten wir auch mit null Zugverkehr. Doch in Thermopolis sahen wir überraschend einen Güterzug Ri. Shoshoni fahren. So wurde dieser Zug bis zum Scheitelpunkt auf der anderen Seite der Bergkette verfolgt. Überraschend stand dort oben schon ein weiterer Güterzug Ri. Worland, welchen wir ebenfalls verfolgt hatten.

The Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway begins in the town of Shoshoni at milepost 100. Following U.S. 20 north through Wind River Canyon and the Wind River Indian Reservation, the route ends just north of the city of Thermopolis at milepost 134. Without stopping, the total drive time is about 40 minutes.
Along the Way
As you travel north from Shoshoni into BoysenState Park, you come face to face with the windswept west. You can see the bare yellow and red rock of the Owl Creek Mountains stretching off to forever, and the deep blue of Boysen Reservoir rippling in contrast. You might even think, with the water skiing and swimming and the walleye and trout fisheries, that you’ve come to the high point of the Byway. But then you drive into Wind River Canyon. Spectacular rock walls rise 2,500 vertical feet on either side to the ridge tops. You can crane your neck and see some of the oldest rock formations in the world, dating back to the Precambrian period, (more that 2.9 billion years ago) visible right from the highway, their black and pink cliffs protruding to the sky. The geology of every layer is marked by interpretive signage, making the drive a geology lesson and a trip through time.
The Wind River itself flows north through the canyon. Wind River Canyon Whitewater & Flyfishing Outfitter, a Native American-owned business, is the only outfitter permitted to raft/fish in the Indian Reservation portion of the canyon. With fallen rocks and boulders jutting from the riverbed, the unique water hydraulics make for some spectacular white water indeed.
Before it leaves the canyon, the river changes names. At the “Wedding of the Waters,” the Wind River becomes the Rocky Mountain Bighorn River, named for the mountain sheep indigenous to the area. Keep an eye out for these wooly cliff dwellers as you drive. 1995 saw 43 bighorns “transplanted” along the canyon rim. After making the trip from Dubois, WY in horse trailers, the sheep were then loaded onto flatcars by Burlington-Northern Railroad before traveling the final 7 miles by railroad. They were released in the canyon, bolstering today’s population to an estimated 100 sheep in Wind River Canyon.
Thermopolis
The byway ends just north of Thermopolis, home of the world’s largest mineral hot spring in Hot Springs State Park. Needless to say, this town is worth a stop. Here you can enjoy hot springs facilities, cooling ponds, a swinging foot bridge across the Big Horn River, hiking paths and a chance to see wild buffalo.
Wind River Bighorn - Our Wyoming
Bighorn sheep were once prolific across Wyoming. In this episode we look at what happened in to the Sinks Canyon herd, and how a number of people and organizations have come together to study the neighboring Temple Peak herd of bighorn sheep, one of the last remaining in the southern Wind River mountains. Their findings will be used to determine whether or not it would be beneficial to add additional sheep to the area.

Drive Thru Wind River Canyon
Vacation 2013. I have driven all over this country. This, by far, is one of my favorite stretches of highway. Take Wyoming Highway 20/26 west from Casper to Shoshoni. After 97 miles of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING the highway opens up into this! Recently I received news that somewhat tempered my enthusiasm of this drive. A very dear friend of many years was struck and killed by a drunk driver here. So please, when you drive, drive safe, drive alert and DON'T DRIVE DRUNK!
