Vivid pink and orange rocky masses and pinnacles crumble into the blue sea composing Les Calanche Cliffs. Unusual erosion patterns form the rocks and porphyry needles, some of which soar 300 m (980 ft) above the waves. Strange patterns emerge from the constant water and wind erosion forming different figures and animals, the most famous of which is at the north end called the Tête de Chien (Dog's Head). Other creatures, include a Moor's head, a bishop, a bear, and a tortoise.

The ancient Cosquer cave that is part of the cliffs is a grotto that is 37 m (120 ft) underwater was once inhabited during the Paleolithic era, when the sea level was much lower than today. Its walls are covered with paintings and engravings dating back to between 27,000 and 19,000 BCE and depicting many terrestrial animals, such as bison, ibex, and horses, as well as sea mammals like seals.

Between Porto and Piana, the narrow winding road clings to the coast along superb cliffs of pink granite which plunge steeply down to the sea. Known as the Calanche de Piana, these craggy creeks weathered by erosion look like fantastical forms of sculpture.

In appena 2 km, tra le località di Porto e Piana, la strada offre insolite conformazioni rocciose che sorprendono ad ogni tornante.

Il granito di color rosso è scolpito in modo stravagante: camini, picchi, uomini, animali ecc… L’immaginazione personale fa il resto.

La Città di Ajaccio è la parte «centrale» dell’isola.
La regione di Ajaccio si trova infatti a metà strada tra Bonifacio (estremità sud) e Bastia (parte settentrionale dell’isola). Si tratta dunque della regione più indicata per visitare l’isola nella sua interezza.

Questa regione è molto conosciuta dai turisti, soprattutto per le sue innumerevoli spiagge di rara bellezza, ma anche per la storia della città di Ajaccio sotto il regno di Napoleone.

Piana is a pretty village set in and overlooking the fabulous Calanqes de Piana; one of the most beautiful parts of Corsica. The village is about 11km from Porto, along the D81 calanques road. Piana is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France though in truth its appeal is in its fabulous location overlooking the Golfe de Porto rather than the village itself. The village whilst pleasant is not particularly exciting.

The main historic site is the Baroque church of the village which has a tall square bell tower and inside there are some frescos and paintings by Paul Mathieu Novellini in a style which is typically Corsican. All around the village are fabulous views of the surrounding mountains and also sweeping views over the Golfe de Porto and the red cliffs of the calanques. These make the village a lovely space to stop and there is a little shop, bar and restaurant allowing you to stay and savour the views.

We visited in May when the village was quiet but even then coaches were arriving and departing. Piana is much busier in July and August as is the Calanches road. It is probably best to arrive early morning, or even better, early evening when you can enjoy sunsets over the gulf of Porto as you drive back. The road between Piana and porto along the stunning Calanches is one of the most beautiful drives in Europe. Another way to visit the Calanches is by boat. Another popular boat trip is a visit to the Scandola Nature Reserve.

Corsica has a number of stunning beaches and one of these is Arone beach about 15km from Piana to the south-west. Arone beach is a large sandy beach with a large shallow stretch of water making it great for children. The sea is that beautiful mix of green, blue and turquoise you get on some Corsican beaches and surrounding the bay is a backdrop of green hills and mountains.

Bonifacio - Corse du Sud | France. Bonifacio est une ville située à la pointe sud de la Corse en France. Elle est connue pour son port de plaisance animé et sa citadelle médiévale perchée sur une falaise. Le bastion de l'Étendard datant du XIIIe siècle abrite un petit musée qui retrace l'histoire de la ville. L'escalier du roi d'Aragon, haut de 187 marches, a été taillé dans la falaise. Situées au sud-est de la Corse, les îles inhabitées de Lavezzi forment une réserve naturelle, avec leurs rochers en granite et leurs plages de sable. Elle constitue après Porto-Vecchio la deuxième agglomération du Freto, microrégion s'étendant depuis Bonifacio jusqu'à Conca au nord et Monacia-d'Aullène à l'ouest en passant par Figari et son aéroport.

Built in the 9th century, Bonifacio Citadel is located on a sandstone promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Today, it is more like a museum or a mini village packed with sun-bleached ramshackle houses. Walk the narrow passages to view artisans forging knives and carving wooden goods, and jewelers offering fashions made with the remarkably deep red coral indigenous to the area. Many restaurants, shops, and cafés line the walkways with outdoor seating areas overlooking the Mediterranean. Stroll the maze of alleyways with decorations and designs that go back to medieval times complete with a historical marine cemetery.

The city of Bonifacio is split into two sections. The vieille ville (old town), or la Haute Ville (the Upper city), on the site of a citadel, is located on the promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The citadel was built in the 9th century with the foundation of the city. The Citadel has been reconstructed and renovated many times since its construction and most recently was an administrative center for the French Foreign Legion. Today it is more of a museum. Historically most of the inhabitants have resided in the Haute ville under the immediate protection of the citadel. The harbor facilities and residential areas below, la marine, line the narrow shelf of the inlet and extend for some distance up the valley, giving the settlement a linear appearance and creating a third residential section limited by St. Julien on the east.

The city and its fortifications also extend for some distance along the cliff-tops, which are at about 70 meters (230 ft) elevation. The cliffs have been undercut by the ocean so that the buildings, which have been placed on the very lip of the precipice, appear to overhang it. The appearance from the sea is of a white city gleaming in the sun and suspended over the rough waters below.

Située à la pointe Sud de la Corse, Bonifacio occupe une place particulière dans le paysage de l'Ile de Beauté. Bonifacio is a commune at the southern tip of the island of Corsica, in the Corse-du-Sud department of France. Its inhabitants are called Bonifaciens, feminine Bonifaciennes. The commune is the largest commune of Corsica.

Bonifacio is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea, separated from Sardinia by the Strait of Bonifacio. It is a city placed on the best and only major harbour of the southern coast and also is a commune covering a somewhat larger region including the offshore Isles Lavezzi, giving it the distinction of being the southernmost commune in Metropolitan France.

The southern coast in the vicinity of Bonifacio is an outcrop of chalk-white limestone, precipitous and sculpted into unusual shapes by the ocean. Slightly further inland the limestone adjoins the granite of which the two islands, Sardinia and Corsica, are formed. The port of Bonifacio is placed on the Bay of Bonifacio, a drowned ravine of a fjord-like appearance separated from the ocean by a finger-like promontory 1,500 meters long and 200 meters wide. In prehistoric post-glacial times when sea levels were low and the islands were connected, the ravine was part of a valley leading to upland Corsica. The maximum draught supported by the harbor is 3.5 meters, more than ample for ancient ships and modern small vessels.

Bonifacio is a town on the southern tip of the French island of Corsica. It’s known for its lively marina and medieval clifftop citadel. The 13th-century Bastion de l’Etendard houses a small museum with exhibits on the town’s history. L’Escalier du Roi d’Aragon is 187 ancient steps carved into the cliff face. To the southeast, the uninhabited Lavezzi Islands, a nature reserve, have granite boulders and sandy beaches.

The town of Bonifacio is at the southern tip of Corsica (just 12km from Sardinia) which help give Bonifacio and its harbour a rather exclusive, sophisticated Italian feel - above all around the elegant quay with its palm trees and expensive restaurants. The marina, the citadel and old town, and the views across the harbour and surrounding cliffs are the individual highlights of your visit, but it is the atmosphere and Mediterranean ambiance that will stay longest in your memory.

With a backdrop of cliffs and the citadel above, there are also plenty of bars and restaurants around the harbour to choose from (many rather expensive) this will quickly put you in holiday mood! (Be aware that parking here is very expensive and so choose the car park on the edge of town which is slightly cheaper.) From the port you can also organise your boat trips along the coast or a ferry south to visit Sardinia. We enjoyed the short tour - you get lovely views back onto the town, as well as a good view of the amazing cliffs and small beaches nearby.

Climb next to explore the citadel and historic old town of Bonifacio. Although the climb is quite step you are rewarded with lovely coastal views to distract attention from your legs! Bonifacio is set high on sheer white cliffs which continue around the coast. You can see the famous 'grain of sand' rock in the sea just off the coast from here. Pass through a gateway through the the original walls to discover a picturesque warren of narrow streets and alleys enclosed by the sturdy walls of the citadel. Keep an eye out for the house where Napoleon spent a couple of months with relatives as you wander the streets (Rue des Empereurs).

This medieval old-town in Bonifacio is the oldest town in Corsica and has many tall houses along cobbled streets in a spectacular setting along the top of the cliffs of the white limestone peninsula. The town is split into two main parts with the main town near the main gateway and then a walk to the end of the peninsula here there are military fortifications and a cemetary which is the most southerly in Europe and one of several in France which are built in magnificent locations overlooking the coast, the perfect place to be buried!

There are several individual sights of interest such as a couple of churches, and lots of quaint streets with interesting architectural feautures to admire. Our personal favourite street is Rue du Palais-de-Garde. You can also visit the Bastion d'Etenard (the stronghold of the standard). The publicity describes this as fortifications with terraced gardens but the gardens were almost entirely neglected during our visit. It did however have some excellent views and only cost 2.50 euros

The region around Bonifacio is perhaps best known for having some of the most magnificent beaches on the island - indeed some of the best in the Mediterranean (see also Corsica beaches) - including those at Palombaggia and Saint Giulia. The beach at Rondinara, in a perfect natural bay, is simply stunning.

The prehistoric sites at Filitosa, Casteddu de Cucuruzzu and Palaghju provide an interesting insight into Corsica's long and colourful history.

The town is a major centre for sea based leisure activities such as yachting and diving. Be aware that the success of the yachting is partly due to the fact that Bonifacio is one of the windiest places in France! The setting of Bonifacio, the attractive beaches nearby and other local activities does mean the town gets rather busy in the summer months - not unusual in many of the towns in Corsica - but it is still highly recommended.

Porto is a small village to the west of Corsica, ideally placed for exploring many of the highlights of this dramatically beautiful region of Corsica, with local highlights such as the Scandola Nature Reserve, the Calanches de Piana, the Gorges de Spelunca and the Foret d'Aitone. Indeed this region of Corsica is of such great beauty and interest that it has been designated a UNESCO World heritage Site.

Porto barely existed 50 years ago and has done its best to cater to the ever increasing numbers of tourists that are drawn to this part of Corsica, but in summer the roads and town can be very congested. It gets a bit of a bad rap from some tourist guides but we loved it.

The Calanches and the coastline here in the Porto area was our favourite area of Corsica. The calanches are absolutely breathtaking. Porto itself we found had a nice atmosphere, when we visited in May it was lively but not too much so and had a great selection of bars and restaurants.

Porto Marina, which is where the action is, runs along the edge of a river with a backdrop of tree covered mountains and many of the hotels and appartments in Porto look out over these. As you get to the end of the road the vista opens out to views of the sea and the watchtower on the rock above.

The watchtower is the only real site of historical interest in Porto and was built in the 16th century. You can visit it for a couple of euros which is well worth doing for the magnificent views that it provides from its dramatic location on top of the red cliffs. There is a small museum in the tower too.

The marina is the centre of life in this well placed Corsica resort, and from here you can discover the watchtower and town beach. This is also where you go if you want to go on one of the many boat excursions that leave from Porto and take you either to get a sea view of the Calanches or to the stunning Scandola Nature Reserve.

Be sure to drive south along the corniche road to the little village of Piana. Piana is listed as a most beautiful village but really it is seeing the Calanches that is the goal. This is reputed to be one of the most beautiful stretches of road in all of Europe and rightly so. It really is magnificent. Stop at the rock called the 'Tete de Chien' which really does look like the head of a dog and there is a very pretty walk on one of the Calanche paths from here. Another couple of walks leave from the nearby cafe. All are wonderful to do.

Driving north along the D81 and the calanche road gives you splendid views over the crimson Calanche. This is also the road you need to take to get to the better beaches in the area. The first you come to, after 5km, is the Plage de Bussaglia. Another few kilometers brings you to the Plage de Caspio and then 10km further, take the turning to Osani and then continue to the Plage de Gradelle - the best beach in the area.

A Search for Epic Landscapes, Corse 2017

As usual around this time of the year I'll had out on a search for epic landscapes.
This time the search brings my better half and me to Corse. An island of France in the Mediterranean sea.

We spend three days in Porto Ota on the west side of the island. Porto Ota is a beautiful little harbor town. The view from our hotel room balcony was breath taking. Interesting tip: rent a small motorboat and explore te rocks and caves, calanches de Piana in the cliffs by the sea or the Scandola reserve on the other side of the Porto bay that was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1983.

After Porto Ota we drove inland into the mountains to a little town called Lozzi and rented a cabin with a view on the highest mountain of Corse, Monte Cinto, 2706 mtr high. The landscape here was rather dry ans desolate. Not really my idea of a breath taking view... but beautiful non the less.

We ended the trip with two days in Bonifacio on the far south side of Corse. The historic town of Bonifacio is build on a massive overhanging rock 80 mtr above sea level and is a attraction for photographers. The small and cosy streets packed with shops and restaurants are a delight to stroll trough.
