AERIAL: LIBERTY RESERVOIR | October 2016
The Liberty Reservoir watershed is located in western Baltimore County and eastern Carroll County. The watershed is home to the Liberty Dam that was completed in 1954. Water from the reservoir flows by gravity through a 12.7-mile long, 10-foot diameter tunnel to the Ashburton Water Filtration Plant for treatment in Baltimore City.
The North Branch of the Patapsco River is the primary tributary that feeds the reservoir. Nearly half of the Baltimore County portion of the watershed is forested with large forest blocks in the vicinity of the reservoir.
The 9,200-acre Liberty Reservoir tract is owned by the City of Baltimore and is managed to protect the reservoir. The area is open to hiking, rowing or paddle boating, bird watching, horseback riding and nature photography year-round, and for archery hunting during a regulated season. The reservoir is also managed for warm, cool, and cold water fish species and offers excellent fishing opportunities. Baltimore City owns the reservoir system and offers several recreational opportunities. A Boating and Fishing Guide is available at Baltimore City's website along with other information at their Recreation at Reservoirs link.

Liberty Lake, Zephyr Lodge Women's Retreat, May 2-3, 2014
Liberty Lake, Washington was the setting for the first Christian women's retreat I've attended. A new first for me! We gathered at the Zephyr Lodge for two days of fellowship and worship. In this video I share some of the notes I took during the evening and morning sessions, and show you around the retreat property - at least, the places I saw while I was there.
The Word of Life Women's Ministry sponsored this retreat, and I attended with a few women I'd met through a women's Bible study I attend. Meals and overnight accommodations at the lodge were provided, however I decided to go home on Friday night so I could sleep in my own bed. I returned early the next morning before breakfast.
The meals were a fun time to get to know people I'd never met before. Each table had Table Topics cards on them. Each card had a different question you could ask your new friends. These were very effective in keeping conversations moving.
I enjoyed meeting and listening to the speakers and the Saturday afternoon interview with author Penny Elder. They were all phenomenal... what they shared was much more exciting than the little bits I collected into my notes, but that's all that's left over to share in this video.
One of my favorite experiences of the weekend was the hour of solitude I spent in prayer and meditation next to Liberty Lake. At first, I sat on a rock right next to the lake, but then I felt that Jesus wanted me to go somewhere else. When I was momentarily afraid while climbing the steep rocks back toward the lodge, I thought of the words, Fear not for I am with you, and then I easily climbed back up to a place where I found an old road and followed it until I found the picnic shelter that's shown in the video.
I liked the old stove at that picnic shelter. I love antiques, and this stove definitely qualified even though it isn't in good condition. I wonder if it is one of the original stoves from the lodge, one that former owner Marie Traeger-Wing cooked on to make her famous chicken dinners.
I've found some links to information about LIberty Lake and the Zephyr Lodge.

20th Anniversary of Fireworks Ban Press Briefing
This July marks the 20th anniversary of a complete fireworks ban in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Cheney, Liberty Lake, and the unincorporated parts of Spokane County.
The Spokane Fire Department would like to thank our citizens for their diligent adherence to the ban, which has led to a dramatic drop in fires and injuries associated with Independence Day fireworks.
The fireworks ban helps keep our citizens safe, says Spokane Fire Chief Bobby Williams. I want to commend the community for their willingness to celebrate the Fourth of July without consumer fireworks.
Because of the ban on individual consumer fireworks, fireworks-related fires in the City of Spokane between June 28 and July 6 dropped from an average of 104 in the 10 years prior to the ban to an average of 5 in past 19 years.
Another way to say this: we have avoided an 99 fireworks-caused fires in the City of Spokane in each of the past 19 years. All together, that amounts to1,881 fires that did not impact people and property!
Common fireworks are NOT Safe-and-Sane!
Each year, more than 8,000 fireworks-related injuries occur in the U.S. that are serious enough to require emergency room care or hospitalization during the July 4th period. Most fireworks injuries involve devices that are legal under current federal law.
Children under age 15 suffer the highest rate of injuries from fireworks, and sparklers account for a significant percentage of burn injuries. Sparkler bombs have become an additional concern.
The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Association for Hand Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Center for Injury Research & Policy, Emergency Nurses Association, Fire Department Safety Officers Association, International Association of Arson Investigators, International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Firefighters, International Fire Marshals Association, National Fire Protection Association and Prevent Blindness America all support consumer fireworks bans in throughout the U.S.
Individual fireworks are NOT cheap entertainment! Millions of dollars in direct property damage occur each year in less than two weeks as Americans celebrate Independence Day.
In recent years, the Colville Tribe lost $15 million in timber from a bottle rocket launched from a boat on Lake Roosevelt, and taxpayers lost over $8 million in damage to schools in Washington State.
The big 3 of firecrackers, bottle rockets and missiles have been illegal throughout the State of Washington for more than 60 years. Fines for using fireworks in Spokane start at $513.
Violations of the Spokane ban on consumer fireworks can be reported to Crime Check at 456-2233
Spokane Fire Department encourages the community to celebrate the Fourth of July by enjoying the annual public fireworks display in Riverfront Park.
For additional information on the negative impact of individual fireworks across the U.S., please contact the National Fire Protection Association or the City's public education desk. Violations of the Spokane-area ban can be reported to Crime Check at 456-2233.
Lake Chelan, Washington
Lake Chelan, Washington is located just about a 3-hour beautiful drive east (and slightly north) from Seattle, through the mountains. There are three small communities located on the lake – the communities of Chelan and Manson, and the village of Steheken, which is only accessible via boat, seaplane or hiking. This area is a popular tourist destination with many events, activities and festivals happening year-round, although it is most popular during the summer months. With four full seasons and over 300 days of sunshine per year, this is a far cry from Seattle’s drizzle that we outsiders often tend to picture when considering a trip to Washington.

Flume Gorge, Mount Liberty Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire, USA
Flume Gorge, Mount Liberty Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park, New Hampshire, USA
About Flume Gorge
The Flume is a natural gorge extending 800 feet at the base of Mount Liberty. The walls of Conway granite rise to a height of 70 to 90 feet and are 12 to 20 feet apart. A trip into the Flume begins and ends at the Flume Visitor's Center. Guests can choose to walk through just the Gorge or do a two mile loop. The walk includes uphill walking and lots of stairs. The boardwalk allows you to look closely at the growth of flowers, ferns and mosses found here.
Framed by a spectacular vista of Mount Liberty and Mount Flume, the Visitor Center houses the Flume ticket office, information center, cafeteria, gift shop, and the state park system's historic Concord Coach. A 20-minute movie showcasing beautiful Franconia Notch State Park is available for viewing.
The Flume was discovered in 1808 by 93-year-old “Aunt” Jess Guernsey when she accidently came upon it while fishing. She had trouble convincing her family of the marvelous discovery, but eventually persuaded others to come and see for themselves. At that time, a huge egg-shaped boulder hung suspended between the walls. The rock was 10 feet (3m) high and 12 feet (3.6m) long. A heavy rainstorm in June of 1883 started a landslide that swept the boulder from its place. It has never been found. The same storm deepened the gorge and formed Avalanche Falls.

3. Devil’s Tower
Located in the Bear Lodge Mountains in Crook County in northeastern Wyoming, sits Devil’s Tower. It’s a laccolithic butte that rises to 867 feet from summit to base. The giant monument stands above the Belle Fourche River and was declared a United States National Monument in September of 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. It received its name during an expedition led by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge in 1875 when his interpreter heard and misinterpreted a native name for the mega-structure as “Bad God’s Tower.” Visitors can view the monument from afar, take a guided tour, or, if they’re adventurous, climb the thing. The park is open 24 hours a day, and many choose to view the tower at night, and the park is even going to begin offering astronomy programs in the fall of 2017. Devil’s Tower has been featured in documentaries, books, and movies alike, and was the location in Close Encounters of the Third Kind where humans made contact with aliens.
2. Statue of Liberty
Perhaps one of America’s most well-known monuments is the Statue of Liberty. This massive neoclassical sculpture is found on Liberty Island just off of New York City and was given to the United States as a gift from France. Dedicated on October 28, 1886, the statue has been a hugely popular destination for visitors from all over the world. Ellis Island was also made a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965 and hosts a museum of immigration for all to visit. People traveling to see the statue used to be able to access the balcony around the torch for a magnificent view, but visitors from the public have are barred from the balcony and have been since 1916. That’s not to say that there aren’t some fantastic things to do at the statue these days, as tourists are taken to the island after paying a small fee, undergoing a security check, via ferry, and are then able to see the statue in all her majesty. People can enter the base of the statue after receiving a free pass alongside their ferry ticket, and some, who must reserve a pass long in advance, can climb the stairs to the crown. Only 240 people are allowed to make the climb every day, though, and the ascenders are subject to additional security screening. They are allowed to bring medication and a camera and not much else. Although pretty tightly controlled, this monument seems like a pretty great place to spend a day.
1. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
This park, located in St. Louis, Missouri, was designated on December 21, 1935, and incorporates the Old Courthouse, the Gateway Arch, and will, in the future, incorporate a brand new museum. The old museum, the Museum of Westward Expansion, has been done away with to make room for the new project. At the Old Courthouse—and it is old, seeing as it was built in 1828—visitors can expect to learn about historical court cases, St. Louis’ role in settlers movements into western America, and visit the gift shop where there are lots of books, videos, toys, and apparel dedicated to the history of St. Louis. Those who decide to purchase a ticket for the Gateway Arch are in for a real treat. Inside the nation’s tallest monument, visitors can climb inside the space pod-like tram alongside others for an exciting, and slightly-terrifying ascent to the top. The pods, or capsules, seat five and tuck you in quite snuggly with other capsule-mates. Each capsule has a window so people can see the stairs and inner-workings of the arch on their four-minute climb to the top. Once at the peak of the arch, they find themselves in an observation area with 32 windows, 16 on each side, that overlook the city of St. Louis on one side, and the Mississippi River and Illinois on the other. Everyone is encouraged to stay as long as they’d like and photography is permitted out the tiny windows. Then back into the capsules for the four-minute ride back down. All in all Jefferson National Expansion Monument is a great experience and the more than 1.5 million visitors that flock every year would undoubtedly tell you the same.
