Limerick City Gallery of Art invites you to see the best of contemporary art through the exhibition programme and to enjoy our extensive collection of Irish art.
LCGA is the largest contemporary art gallery in the Mid-Western Region, annually exhibiting national and international artists in a diverse exhibition programme.
The historic Carnegie Building housing LCGA in the People's Park underwent a major redevelopment which was completed in 2012.
Limerick City Gallery of Art is one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Ireland and home to an important collection of Irish 18th to 21st century art in all media, amounting to 831 works.
One quarter of the collection is on permanent display in the gallery including works by Camille Souter, Evie Hone, William Orpen, Sean Keating and Paul Henry.
LCGA also holds the National Collection of Contemporary Drawing and the Michael O'Connor International Poster Collection consisting of over 2800 works of international design.
LCGA hosts the annual e v+ a International (Exhibition of Visual+ Art) - inviting a leading international curator to select from an open submission and invited artists to exhibit throughout Limerick City.
The gallery has a strong educational ethos and programmes a range of free contextual and family events to complement each exhibition season.
The Gallery is housed in a two storey building with 650 square metres of exhibition space in eleven white cube spaces of varying dimensions and one large historic gallery displaying the gallery's Permanent Collection.
Limerick City Gallery of Art is fully accessible with a ramp at the front entrance, wide doorways, a lift and disabled toilet facilities.

MAKing Art: The DRAWing Exhibition at Draíocht

The National Collection of Contemporary Drawing (NCCD) was officially founded by the Limerick Contemporary Art group, comprised of artists and business people of Limerick in 1987 with the aim of giving the city a distinctive collection of contemporary artwork. The NCCD collection is part of the permanent collection of Limerick City Gallery of Art and comprises of over 200 artworks, which embrace all forms of contemporary drawing practice reflecting in its constantly changing nature as it adapts to new technologies and artistic ideas.
The Artists included in this exhibition at Draíocht include: Dorothy Cross, Liadin Cooke, Brian Bourke, Piet Moog, Alan Keane, Brian Maguire, John Aiken, Felim Egan, Niamh O’Malley, Elizabeth McGill, Nigel Rolfe, Arno Kramer, Tjibbe Hooghemstra, Susan Dunne, Aileen McKeogh, Nick Miller, Siobhan Piercy, Chris Boland and Kyd & Kyde Konenyykb.

Limerick City - An ancient city well studied in the arts of war
The city dates from at least the Viking settlement in 812. The Normans redesigned the city in the 12th century and added much of the most notable architecture, such as King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral.
During the civil wars of the 17th century the city played a pivotal role, besieged by Oliver Cromwell in 1651 and twice by the Williamites in the 1690s. This turbulent period earned the city its motto: Urbs antiqua fuit studisque asperrima belli (An ancient city well studied in the arts of war).
Although a lot of developments in Limerick have been concentrated in suburban areas there has been notable modern architectural developments and improvements in the appearance of city centre in recent years. Most developments have been along the banks of the river Shannon and are facing onto the river. The most prominent are the 60m high Riverpoint building and the 200 ft four star Clarion Hotel on Steamboat quay. Other developments include apartments and office blocks along the quays. Other developments in the city centre include the successful redevelopment of Bedford Row, Henry street, Thomas street and Catherine street.

I Love Limerick. Johnny Duhan's song 'Just Another Town' captures the spirit of Limerick life in earlier times. Limerick City is the 3rd largest city in the Republic of Ireland. The river Shannon runs through the city. The spire viewed from the street is the 'Fathers'(The Church of Saint Alphonsus built 1858) whose bells ring out hymns -cssrlimerick.ie. The artistic talent abounds from this street and area -Frank McCourt writer of Angela's Ashes. In the late 1800's-1920's this area was known as Little Jerusalem, jewish people fleeing Russia settled here. The Hunt Museum, Limerick
In this video, Hugh Maguire, director of the the Hunt Museum chats about one of Limerick's most loved attractions and highlights some of the exhibitions and events planned for 2012 at the museum.
The Hunt Museum exhibits one of Ireland's greatest private collections of art and antiquities, dating from the Neolithic to the 20th Century, including works by Renoir, Picasso and Yeats.
There are artefacts from Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Olmec civilisation. There is also an important collection of Irish archaeological material ranging from Neolithic flints and Bronze Age material, including a Bronze Age shield and cauldron, to later Christian objects such as the unique 9th century Antrim Cross.
One of the strengths of the collection is the medieval material, which include statues in stone and wood, painted panels, jewellery, enamels, ivories, ceramics, crystal and crucifixes.
18th and 19th century decorative arts are also represented with fine examples of silver, glass and ceramics. Artists' works in the collection include Pablo Picasso, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Roderic O'Conor, Jack B. Yeats, Robert Fagan and Henry Moore.
