Portugal: Beyond Lisbon with Rich Earl | Rick Steves Travel Talks
There's more to Portugal than Lisbon, as Rick Steves' Europe travel expert Rich Earl explains in this travel talk. Rich surveys Portugal's top stops, from the university town of Coimbra, to the gentrifying second city of Porto, to the vineyard-terraced Douro Valley (the birthplace of port wine). In the center of Portugal are the beach resort of Nazaré, the charming hill town of Óbidos, and the religious sites of Alcobaça, Batalha, and Fátima. Finally, we'll unwind in southern Portugal, in the arid Alentejo region and the beachy Algarve coast.

We Moved to Lisbon, Portugal!
Week 1 of our big adventure - moving from Santa Monica, CA to Lisbon, Portugal! Our first week here was a blur: getting our apartment set up, exploring our new neighborhood, multiple trips to the mall for household supplies, a trip to Ikea, shopping at the market, going to the bank, finding an English-speaking doctor, navigating the subway system, visiting the zoo, checking out the aquarium, setting up our phones, and LOTS of walking up and down hills. More videos to come as we settle in to our new home here in Lisbon!
ABOUT OUR VLOG
We’re a small family embarking on a big journey - leaving behind life-as-we-know-it in California and searching for new daily adventures in Portugal and beyond. We’re diving outside our comfort and time zone and immersing ourselves in a new culture, traditions, cuisine, and (of course) playgrounds. We don’t promise to be perfect! But we do promise to meet interesting people, explore new cities, give a few tips, make lots of mistakes, and have fun along the way… And hopefully inspire you to embark on your own adventures both near and far. Every day is an adventure!

Lisbon-Lisboa-Portugal:
Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of Portugal, with an estimated population of 505,526[ within its administrative limits in an area of 100.05 km2. Lisbon's urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.8 million people, being the 11th-most populous urban area in the European Union. About 3 million people live in the Lisbon metropolitan area, which represents approximately 27% of the country's population. It is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus. The westernmost portions of its metro area form the westernmost point of Continental Europe, which is known as Cabo da Roca, located in the Sintra Mountains.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens), predating other modern European capitals by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been the political, economic and cultural center of Portugal.
Lisbon is located at 38°42′49.75″N 9°8′21.79″W, situated at the mouth of the Tagus River and is the westernmost capital of a mainland European country.
The westernmost part of Lisbon is occupied by the Parque Florestal de Monsanto (English: Monsanto Forest Park), a 10 km2 (4 sq mi) urban park, one of the largest in Europe, and occupying 10% of the municipality. The historical population of the city was around 35,000 in 1300 AD. Up to 60,000 in 1400 AD, and rising to 70,000 in 1500 AD. Between 1528–1590 the population went from 70,000 to 120,000. The population was about 150,000 in 1600 AD, and almost 200,000 in 1700 AD.

Lisbon (Lisboa) - capital city of Portugal
An impression of Lisbon, Portugal. More videos of Lisbon:
Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) is the capital and the largest city of Portugal. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the oldest in Western Europe, predating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries.
The city is rich in architecture; Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Modern and Postmodern constructions can be found all over Lisbon.
Its urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits. About approximately 27% of the country's population live in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The municipality of Lisbon includes 24 civil parishes ('frequesias').
Lisbon has a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and warm to hot, dry summers. The typical summer season lasts about four months, from June to September.
It is continental Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus.
DISTRICTS:
Alfama - the oldest district of Lisbon; it spreads down the southern slope from the Castle of São Jorge to the River Tagus.
Baixa Pombalina - downtown district; it is the heart of the city.
Chiado - a traditional shopping area that mixes old and modern commercial establishments, concentrated specially in the Rua do Carmo and the Rua Garrett.
Bairro Alto - upper district that functions as a residential, shopping, restaurant/bar/club area; it is the centre of a youth-oriented nightlife.
Belém - famous district from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery.
Parque das Nações - the newest district in Lisbon, having emerged from an urban renewal program leading to the World Exhibition of Lisbon 1998, also known as Expo'98.

Remembrances of a beautiful August in Portugal. A country not to be missed - less commercialized. Love that bridge in Lisboa, the Alfama and the street cars reminded me of San Francisco. Fado gets into your soul.
