LISBON: Baixa Pombalina - downtown district (2/5) Portugal
The Pombaline Lower Town (Portuguese: Baixa Pombalina) is an elegant district in Lisbon/Lisboa (Portugal), primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. It takes its name from Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, who took the lead in ordering the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. The Marquis of Pombal imposed strict conditions on rebuilding the city, and the current grid pattern strongly differs from the organic streetplan that characterised the district before the earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa is one of the first examples of earthquake-resistant construction. Architectural models were tested by having troops march around them to simulate an earthquake.
The Pombaline Baixa consists of the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.

The Praça do Comércio (English: Commerce Square) is located in Lisbon, near the Tagus river. The square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço because it was the location of the Paços da Ribeira until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake. After the earthquake, the square was completely remodelled as part of the rebuilding of the Pombaline Downtown.
Arco da Rua Augusta (English: Rua Augusta Arch is a stone, triumphal arch-like, historical building and visitor attraction on the Praça do Comércio (square). It was built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Because of the top cornice's great height (over 100 feet/30 m), the figures above it had to be made colossal. From 9th of August 2013 it is possible to reach the viewpoint oat the top of the arch, using a lift and two flights of steep stairs.
Praça do Rossio (English: Rossio Square) is the popular name of the Praça de D. Pedro IV. It has been one of its main squares since the Middle Ages. It has been the setting of popular revolts and celebrations, bullfights and executions, and is now a preferred meeting place of Lisbon natives and tourists alike.
The Praça da Figueira (English: Square of the Fig Tree) is a large square in the centre of Lisbon. It is part of the Baixa Pombalina, the area of the city reurbanised after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. In 1971 a bronze equestrian statue representing King John I (1357-1433) was inaugurated in the square. In 1999/2000, during the last renovation of the square, the statue was relocated from the middle to a corner of the square, in order to make it visible from the Praça do Comércio.
Praça dos Restauradores (English: Restauradores Square) is a public square in Lisbon, surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings. It is located at the southeast end of Avenida da Liberdade, near Rossio square. The square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, inaugurated in 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War, in 1640.

Destination/Property Market Guide to Baixa, Lisbon
Considered the true heart of Lisbon, between Chiado and Alfama, Baixa is where the capital’s historic and commercial centres meet. Having been rebuilt in the 1700s, Baixa’s beautiful architecture is neo classical with large town squares filled with an air of grandeur.
During the day the streets are bustling with locals and tourists soaking up the atmosphere in the large selection of restaurants, boutiques and traditional Portuguese shops on Rua Augusta. Plus with Avenida da Liberdade only a few minutes away, luxury shops are very much accessible within walking distance. When you feel like escaping the lively streets, you can always head down to the Tagus river at the bottom of Baixa, where people go to relax on the bank and lounge in the sun.

Lisboa, Baixa Pombalina - Fev 2017
Lisbon: Day and Night in The Baixa
The Baixa is a small, flat part of old Lisbon between two steep hills. It was destroyed by the earthquake, fire and tsunami that devastated Lisbon in 1755. The Marquis of Pombal rebuilt the Baixia on a grid pattern, with buildings that were both simple (he had a limited budget) and earthquake resistant.
The odd-looking column seen toward the beginning and at night at the end of the video is the Elevador de Santa Justa. Designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, it'a a working elevator that takes Lisboetas - and tourists - from the Baixia to the hilltop neighborhoods of Chiado and Bairro Alto
