Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery. In particular, it is the place from which Vasco da Gama departed for India in 1497. It is also a former royal residence and features the 17th--18th century Belém Palace, former royal residence and now occupied by the President of Portugal.
Perhaps Belém's most famous feature is its tower, Torre de Belém, whose image is much used by Lisbon's tourist board. The tower was built as a fortified lighthouse late in the reign of Dom Manuel (1515--1520) to guard the entrance to the port at Belém. It stood on a little island in right side of the Tagus, surrounded by water.

A Camera Floating Among The Crowd. Walking Around PORTUGAL by Wanna Walk — Welcome to LISBON, where geography is hard on the feet but very pleasant to the eye! The city is extremely hilly, in fact, Lisbon is built on seven hills.
Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

Portugal is a southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula, bordering Spain. Its location on the Atlantic Ocean has influenced many aspects of its culture: salt cod and grilled sardines are national dishes, the Algarve's beaches are a major destination and much of the nation’s architecture dates to the 1500 to 1800s, when Portugal had a powerful maritime empire.
This is a walking tour around Lisbon (Lisboa) the capital of Portugal. Be sure to visit the Castelo de São Jorge, Museu do Teatro Romano, Ponte 25 de Abril, Ponte Vasco da Gama, Aqueduto das Aguas Livres, Belem Tower and more. Be sure to check the Portuguese food, because it's just fantastic. Dining rituals tend to follow the Mediterranean siesta body clock.

Most restaurants are very small, family run and generally cheap. Some of them have a sheet on the door with the pratos do dia (dishes of the day) written on it. These dishes are usually cheaper and fresher than the rest of menu there, and unless you're looking for something specific, they're the right choice.

20 Things to do in Lisbon, Portugal Travel Video Transcript:
We feel like we know this city well, so in this Lisbon travel guide we’re going to show you around what we think are some of the best attractions. We only had 3 days in the city this time around, so this Lisbon itinerary will be perfect for any of you visiting on a long weekend escape.
We kicked off our first morning with a ride on Lisbon’s most iconic tram line:#28 bound for panoramic vistas and a hilltop castle. After postcard perfect views looking down over Alfama we went towards the castle, with a little detour offering a bit of street art.
St George Castle is a Moorish castle that looks down over the historic centre and the Tagus River. It’s one of the main tourist landmarks in the city and you get great views of Lisbon.
We circled back to visit the Jeronimos Monastery. Construction of this monastery was ordered by King Manuel, who selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery.
Pastéis de nata were created by the monks at the Jerónimos Monastery, and seeing as we were right next door, this was a very logical stop. After browsing at the Sunday Market we walked over to the Santa Justa Elevator, which is the only street lift in Lisbon for public service.
We hope you enjoyed our Lisbon travel guide and found it useful for planning your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of things to do in Lisbon please share those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

From the magnificent architecture of their palaces and cathedrals, to the colour and spectacle of their dancers, you’ll be astounded by the rich diversity of these fascinating countries.
Our journey begins in the vibrant city of Barcelona. Revitalised for the 1992 Olympics, this picturesque city is renowned for Europe's best-preserved Gothic Quarter.
A special highlight will be a visit to Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece…
the Cathedral of the Sagrada Familia
a visually stunning Cathedral and Barcelona's most important landmark.
We also visit Guell Park, a playful urban park featuring peaceful greens,
winding paths and many sculptures and mosaics designed by Gaudi himself including gingerbread gatehouses, patchwork lizards and much more.
Following the coastline south we’ll visit the fortified seaport of Pensicola before our arrival to the coastal city of Valencia. Among the highlights of our included guided tour, will be the ‘City of Arts and Sciences’ – the most important modern tourist destination in the city. From here we head to the hilltop town of Granada, nestled amongst the Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest mountain range.
At the centrepiece of the city lies one of the most brilliant jewels of world architecture …the Alhambra, a series of magnificent palaces, fountains and gardens, built in the 14th century. Within the Alhambra stands the massive Palace of Charles the fifth, an outstanding example of Spanish
Renaissance architecture.
Visit Sacromonte (Sac-Ro-Mone-E), famous for its cave dwellings and once the home of Granada's large gypsy community. Here we enjoy a Scenic exclusive: an evening of authentic flamenco dancing in the caves.
Retire to the Palacio de Santa Paola, located in the historic centre, surrounded by stunning garden terraces. A short trip finds us in Cordoba, for a guided visit of the incredible Mezquita, a Gothic Christian cathedral housed inside a large Moorish Mosque.
Travel to Ronda, one of Andalucía’s loveliest towns, steeped in history.
It stands on a towering plateau in the mountains of Malaga Province
and is famous for the plunging river gorge which divides the medieval and 18th century parts of the town.
It is the oldest and the most beautiful in Spain and the arena itself is also the country's largest. We continue towards the Portuguese border to Seville, one of Spain's most charming cities. Enjoy exploring the city sights including the Cathedral housing the tomb of Christopher Columbus and step aboard a horse drawn carriage which will wind through the city’s streets and alleyways.
In Lisbon, we visit the lovely port area, the Alfama (Al-Fam-A) Quarter, with its picturesque cobbled streets and the Avenida de Liberdade (Aven-Knee-Da der Liber-Dad) – the monument to the famous Portuguese explorers – as well as the Belem (bell-eim) Tower.
Located on the Douro River Estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres and was once an outpost of the Roman Empire. Among the highlights of our stay in Porto is a special dinner cruise aboard a traditional ‘Rabelo’(har-bell-o) boat in this fabulously pretty city and a tasting of the city’s namesake.
You’ll have a fun filled afternoon where you may try your hand, and your feet, at a local ‘Tablao’ (tab-lowe) for a fun and energetic afternoon of Flamenco Dance, or for the sportsters you may choose to visit the Bernabeau Football stadium as well as the Trophy Museum of Real Madrid!

Porto
Day 1 in Portugal
Started off with a little trip to Porto by myself. I thought I might as well visit a different city before the main trip, plus it was only approx £10 more for a flight to Lisbon.
I went to centro Porto to have a walk about. Visiting a wine museum, be courts ( because why not....and I didn't realise it was the courts...), photography museum and a nightclub.
I tried some Portuguese sweets ( no idea what they were called)
Lisbon day 2
Flew from Porto to Lisbon and met up with 3 friends asset the airport. Took an Uber taxi to the sexy corinthia hotel lisboa.
We were greeted by our host who have us our colorful pink wristbands and told us what excursions we had included ( Obidos town guided tour, Vineyard tour and a 24 hour Hop on hop off bus tour).
First day was a relax day....so we left the hotel to explore. Played in a park and got lost to find out we were 2 minutes from the hotel originally before we went the wrong way.
Day 3 was the Obidos town and Vineyard guided tour.
SOOOO many hills in Obidos and wall climbing opportunities. I climbed the big wall and walked along it to find a a hole in the wall big enough to fit through...so I did.
While we were there we had a few Shot of a cherry liqueur (i forgot the name) in a chocolate cup.
Then off to the Vineyard tour. I've never been to a vineyard and I'm not a fan of tours but this one was actually really good. We got told about how they make different wines And spirits. (i didn't know they used red grapes to make some white wines!!!)
They gave us around 6 different wines to taste ( as much as we wanted) and a buffet meal. Yum.
Day 4.. 24 hour bus tour time!!!
Got up for breakfast buffet and jumped on the plan topped bus to remember I left my phone in the room. Had to run back and jump on the next one.
We went to
El corte inglês
Parque Eduardo VII
Jardim da estrela
Torre de Belém
Cais do Sodré
Rua do comércio
Praça do rossio
R. de Santa Justa

Lisbon - Nearby Queluz & Belém
QUELUZ is a city just outside Lisbon, (a short, easy, train ride).
It contains the PALACE OF QUELUZ, a Portuguese 18th-century palace. One of the last great Rococo buildings to be designed in
Europe, it was begun in 1747. In 1794, It became the official residence of the Portuguese prince regent John VI, and his family. The palace is often referred to as the Portuguese Versailles.
A visit to Queluz is an easy day-trip from Lisbon, and can be combined with a visit to Sintra, (but to see both comfortably you should spend a night in Sintra). Please see our video Travel Portugal - Sintra, Mysterious City.
Next we visit BELEM....
a picturesque district slightly west of central Lisbon. This was the center of activity for early Portuguese explorers, and maintains a distinct sea-faring atmosphere. There are several fascinating museums, but for most of us the major sights are:
The iconic Torre de Belem with its decorative battlements and Islamic influences.
The Padrao dos Descobrimentos monument, and the wonderful views.
The Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, - - an architectural marvel.
And for us, (as horse lovers), a brief visit to the Belem center for the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art. We enjoyed watching a training session.
Music: Thanks to Jeff Carter, who performed Ponce Preludio in E Major, then made it available to all via MusOpen.
Historic Portuguese mansion an oasis of calm in colourful India
(16 Jul 2017) LEADIN
A 425 year old Portuguese mansion in India has opened its door to visitors to offer a glimpse of its colonial history.
The much-loved home of Goa's Figeuiredo family is not only a repository of memories but a treasure trove of antique furniture and precious artifacts dating back to 17th century.
The Figueiredo mansion is now part museum and part homestay and the family hopes to keep its legacy alive in the years to come.
STORYLINE
Unlike the Goa of popular imagination - of sandy beaches and liquor shacks - Loutolim in South Goa is a quaint village surrounded by paddy fields.
Goa was a Potuguese colony until 1961 and a part of that history is visible in the Indo-European architecture of the village homes and mansions.
This is where the Figueiredo family made its home in 1590. A second part of the house was constructed 200 years later.
Age sits lightly on the sprawling, 4-centuries-old Figueiredo Mansion.
It has been lovingly preserved by the family, whose members were Portuguese diplomats, lawyers and parliamentarians.
About an hour's drive from Goa's airport, a rundown, roadside sign reads Casa Museu V.J. De Figueiredo Loutolim to let visitors know they've reached their destination.
A musty smell of history, memories and magnificent wooden furniture pervades the arcaded corridors with rooms on both sides.
Three generations of the Figueiredo family live in the house, each with their own connection to the priceless legacy.
Maria de Fatima Figueiredo de Alburquerque, known as Fatima, was born in this house but grew up in Portugal.
Two years ago, she left her job as an international executive and came back to Goa to help her mother - the current owner - take care of the house.
One wing of the house with rooms full of elaborate carved furniture, Belgian crystal chandeliers, Chinese porcelain pieces, art and family heirlooms has been turned into a museum.
Every artifact in the mansion has its own story, and Fatima's narrative helps in bringing some of that composite culture alive for the guests.
This is the ballroom and all the furniture is made in Goa, by Goans, and by Hindus, Muslims and Catholics. And normally the Hindus they used to put something of their God or Goddesses or their mythology and here we see that this for sure is made by Hindus, Fatima says as she points to the figure of a Hindu God carved in the wooden chair.
The family prayer room is dedicated to the mother of Virgin Mary.
The 200 year old private chapel is paved with a mosaic of Portuguese tiles.
Nearby is an antique chest of drawers made of ivory, metal, rosewood and teak with images of lions carved into the base.
This is the only one that exists with the four lions and also in this size. There are some around the world and there is one in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London but smaller than this one, she says.
The elegant décor of the dining room is laid out on the expansive solid teak wood floor.
Navigating through the lavish room, she points to another family treasure - a 200-year old, 60-piece crockery set made specially for the family by the East India Company.
This is unique in the world with this design and colours. And it is in the family more than 200 years, says Fatima.
Her mother, 87-year old Maria de Lourdes Figueiredo de Albuquerque is the owner of the mansion and the guiding spirit behind the effort to preserve the family heritage.
Maria grew up in the mansion along with her sister when the family was based in the west Indian state.
She moved to Portugal as a young woman, where she witnessed the political turmoil that led to the end of the European country's 451-year colonial rule in Goa in 1961.
Taking care of the stock of family possessions is a daunting task, says Fatima.

Rottnest Island Old Tram
The train / tram was originally devised as a means of transporting munitions to the guns on top of Oliver Hill. Set out for a guided exploration of the Rottness Island Fortress to tour bunkers and underground tunnels and gaze into the barrel of a massive 9.2-inch (23.4 cm) Mk X gun. Along the way, listen as your guide shares insight into the island's military history – it served as an internment and work camp for suspected enemies during both World Wars.
Today, that dark chapter of the island's history is decidedly closed, and Rotto is a favourite destination for beach-goers, wildlife lovers and sun-seekers from the mainland.
