Amelia Island/Fort Clinch, Florida
Short slide show of our December 2014 trip to Amelia Island.
Amelia Island is an island in Nassau County, Florida. One of the southernmost of the Sea Islands, a chain of barrier islands stretching along the east coast of the United States from South Carolina to Florida, it is 13 miles (21 km) long and approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) wide at its widest point. The communities of Fernandina Beach and Amelia City are both located on the island.
Named for Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of Great Britain, the island has changed hands between colonial powers a number of times. It is claimed that eight flags have flown over Amelia Island: French, Spanish, British, Patriot, Green Cross, Mexican, Confederate, and United States.
Fort Clinch:
At over 1,400 acres, Fort Clinch State Park is situated on Florida’s northernmost barrier island- Amelia Island. The park provides exceptional recreational activities immersed among beautiful natural communities, as well as wildlife viewing, historic attractions and unparalleled living history interpretive programs.
The park’s 3-mile shoreline and a 1/2–mile long fishing pier offer a wide variety of family-friendly recreational activities including swimming, fishing, sunbathing and wildlife viewing. Shelling and shark-tooth hunting are popular activities near the pier and along the St. Mary’s Inlet. 68 campsites and a large group camping facility offer unparalleled overnight experiences in the Real Florida! Enjoy miles of bicycling on the historic oak-canopy drive, or for the more adventurous, hiking & biking the 6-mile off-road multi-use trail. The Park offers a guided nature walk at the Willow Pond Nature Trail every Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Visit historic Fort Clinch & step back to the year 1864, as soldiers reenact life during the Civil War. Explore the many rooms, galleries and grounds of the fort as you learn how the soldiers worked and lived each day. Today, park staff provide living history interpretations of the life of a Union soldier, a 1st New York Volunteer Engineer, who garrisoned the fort during the Civil War. The Fort is open 365 days a year from 9am-5pm.

Fort Clinch - Camping Full Facility
Visitors can enjoy the conveniences of modern camping while taking in the rich cultural and natural history of one of Florida's oldest and most diverse state parks. Nestled at Florida's most northeasterly tip, Fort Clinch State Park offers 70 campsites in two separate and unique campgrounds. The Amelia River campground is located at the north end of the park along the St. Mary’s River. Shady, Spanish moss-laden oak trees offer an old Florida ambience to the Amelia River Campground's 43 sites while providing a breathtaking view of the Amelia River just a short distance from each campsite. The Amelia River Campground bathroom is air conditioned during the warmer months.
Located along the northeast tip of the park, just steps from the ocean, Atlantic Beach Campground offers 21 RV and six tent-only sites which are typical of the Florida beach atmosphere surrounded by snow white sand dunes and sunny sites. Both campgrounds have a dump station, soft drink vending machines, laundry machines and beautiful new accessible heated bathrooms with showers.
Each campsite has a fire ring, picnic table, potable water and a mixture of 30 and 50-amp electric hook-ups. Specific details about each site can be viewed on Reserve America. The dump station facilities are free of charge to registered campers, but are also available for day visitors who wish to utilize these services for a fee. Hiking In Florida At Tibet-Butler Preserve
A hike through a small portion of Tibet-Butler preserve - Orange County, Florida. This hike was just before dusk - adding a gorgeous, slight golden/orange look to the trails.
This park consists of a few different trails with different ecosystems. A very small portion is boardwalk as it crosses over a swamp and a lagoon feed-off from Lake Butler.
The park has no cost for entry and there is an information/viewing center at the park's entrance. It's perfect for families.
