SUMMARY
=======
Little Missouri National Grassland is a National Grassland located in western North Dakota, USA. At 1,028,051 acres (416,037 ha), it is the largest grassland in the country. Enclaved within its borders is Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is managed by the National Park Service (and therefore not included in the preceding statistics). The Little Missouri National Grassland was once a part of the Custer National Forest, but is now a part of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands, a National Forest unit consisting entirely of National Grasslands. A predominant feature of the grassland is colorful and beautiful badlands, a rugged terrain extensively eroded by wind and water. It is a mixed grass prairie, meaning it has both long and short grass.The boundaries of the grasslands on certain maps can be misleading. Within the boundaries of the national grassland are significant portions of state-owned and privately owned land, much of it leased by cattle ranchers for grazing. Overall, in descending order of land area, it is located in parts of McKenzie, Billings, Slope, and Golden Valley counties.
Private land intersperses the public grassland acres and there is heavy cattle grazing throughout with 253 allotments in the Medora district and more than 190 allotments in the Mckenzie district.White Butte, North Dakota's highest point, is located in the extreme southeast corner of the grassland, south of the town of Amidon.
The grassland is administered by the Forest Service as part of the Dakota Prairie Grasslands from offices in Bismarck, North Dakota. There are local ranger district offices in Dickinson and Watford City.The ongoing oil and gas exploration, extraction, and distribution in the region has the potential for long term negative impacts on the soil, water, vegetation, and wildlife of the grassland, including threatened and endangered species.

Red Tail Campground, Medora North Dakota.
One of 2 RV parks in the small town of Medora,ND, it's an established park with sites for tents to full hook-up sites for ant RV. Lots of mature trees with paved interior roads. Sites are packed gravel & level. Both back-in & pull-thru sites. Cable TV & iffy WiFi at sites; better internet luck by the office. While here, visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park, The Cowboy Pitch Fork Dinner & the Medora Players. We stayed here in a Motorhome.

Little Missouri State Park, 10/2014
Ridiculously fast video filmed at LMSP, off Route 22 in southwestern North Dakota. In my defense, I was in a hurry since it was about to snow and I didn't want to get stuck in a blizzard on I-94 -- which, as it turned out, was exactly what happened. Three hours to go 85 miles. Handsome man is DH.

Some pics and video from my late October trip to Roosevelt National Park and National Grasslands (including the Petrified Forest) near Medora, North Dakota. It is beautiful country! Luckily, the weather held out nicely and I essentially had the whole park to myself. I hope to return in the summer.

Roosevelt National Park
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited Theodore Roosevelt National Park, one of two Roosevelt National Parks in the badlands of North Dakota. It is a great place for families to visit in the summer, when the weather in North Dakota is fantastic. Camping in North Dakota will give you the opportunity to see beautiful landscape, open prairies, and tons of wildlife, including wild horses, buffalo, elk, coyote, porcupine, and thousands of prairie dogs. There is also a great Visitor's Center at the entrance to the park, and the rangers give daily tours of the cabin that Teddy Roosevelt lived in when he lived in North Dakota prior to becoming President. Camping locations and camping sites are located along the Little Missouri River. North Dakota maps show hotels in North Dakota, including nearby Medora, North Dakota. Families will have a great time in Roosevelt National Park, as Cheap Family Travel discovered when they spent several days in Roosevelt National Park watching wild animals, enjoying the scenery and weather, and relaxing along the Little Mo.
Lush Grasslands Backroads to Three V Crossing on the Little Missouri, North Dakota June 26, 2018
The brilliant greens of June looked like velvety carpet as we drove the backroads of southwestern North Dakota in search of Three V Crossing on the Little Missouri River, deep in the heart of ranch country. Well over 125 years before, this was prime grazing for herd of thousands of cattle which were driven to North Dakota and Montana on the Long X Trail when ranching was established. Today historic ranches still raise thousands of head of cattle, and cowboys really do exist.
Share our excitement as we drive the backroads here:
