The British royal family attend morning service
(25 Dec 2018) Queen Elizabeth II was cheered by onlookers when she and other senior royals arrived at a Christmas church service on the grounds of one of her country estates.
The 92-year-old queen arrived by car on Tuesday morning while younger royals walked from her country house in Sandringham to nearby St. Mary Magdalene Church.
Prince Charles led the way, followed by his sons: Prince William and his wife Catherine and Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, who is expecting their first child in the spring.
Harry and Meghan walked arm in arm next to William and Catherine.
Many in the crowd wished the young royals a Merry Christmas as they strolled to the church on a cold wintry day in the English countryside.
Later they received flowers from the crowd after the 45-minute service as they headed back to Sandringham House ahead of a traditional Christmas lunch.
The queen's husband, Prince Philip, who is 97 and largely retired from public life, did not attend the church service.
Charles' wife Camilla, who is recovering from 'flu, also missed the service.
Many other members of the royal family were also in attendance.
Prince Andrew, the queen's son, arrived by car with his mother.
Princess Eugenie, one of the queen's grandchildren, arrived with her new husband Jack Brooksbank.
Britain's royals usually exchange small gifts on Christmas Eve, a practice popularized by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The queen typically frowns on extravagant gifts and many of the presents are novelty items.

St. Mary Redcliffe is an Anglican parish church located in the Redcliffe district of Bristol, England. The church is a short walk from Bristol Temple Meads. The church building was constructed from the 12th to the 15th centuries, and it has been a place of Christian worship for over 900 years. The church is renowned for the beauty of its Gothic architecture and is classed as a Grade I listed building by Historic England.[1][2] It was famously described by Queen Elizabeth I as the fairest, goodliest, and most famous parish church in England.[3][4]
Little remains of the earliest churches on the site although a little of the fabric has been dated to the 12th century. Much of the current building dates from the late 13th and 14th centuries when it was built and decorated by wealthy merchants of the city whose tomb and monuments decorate the church. The spire fell after being struck by lightning in 1446 and was not rebuilt until 1872. Little of the original stained glass remains following damage in the English Civil War with extensive new glass being added during the Victorian era. The tower contains 15 bells designed for full-circle English-Style change ringing. Other music in the church is provided by several choirs and the Harrison & Harrison organ.
History:
The first church on this site was built in Saxon times, as the Port of Bristol first began.[5] In medieval times, St. Mary Redcliffe, sitting on a red cliff above the River Avon, was a sign to seafarers, who would pray in it at their departure, and give thanks there upon their return. The church was built and beautified by Bristol's wealthy merchants, who paid to have masses sung for their souls and many of whom are commemorated there.[6]

Parts of the church date from the beginning of the 12th century. Although its plan dates from an earlier period, much of the church as it now stands was built between 1292 and 1370, with the south aisle and transept in the Decorated Gothic of the 13th century and the greater part of the building in the late 14th century Perpendicular. The patrons included Simon de Burton, Mayor of Bristol, and William I Canynges, merchant, five times Mayor of Bristol and three times MP. In the 15th century Canynges' grandson, the great merchant William II Canynges, also five times Mayor and three times MP, assumed responsibility for bringing the work of the interior to completion and filling the windows with stained glass. In 1446 much of this work was damaged when the spire was struck by lightning, and fell, causing damage to the interior; however the angle of the falling masonry and the extent of the damage is unclear.[7] Although the spire was to remain damaged for the next 400 years, Canynges continued in his commitment to restore and beautify the church. He took Holy Orders after the death of his wife, and is buried in the church.[8] Other families associated with St Mary Redcliffe include the Penns, the Cabots, the Jays, the Ameryks and the Medes.[6]......

The prince has stepped back from his royal duties after controversy over his links with billionaire sex offender Jeffery Epstein.
While most off the family arrived in front of crowds lining the roads, Andrew, accompanied by his brother, arrived earlier at a different entrance.
The BBC's royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell said the prince was a significant absentee from the main service at 11am.
Our correspondent said: If he had attended [the main service] a lot of the coverage would have been around him. He has become... something of an embarrassment currently to the Royal Family.
The 11am service was broadcast live to the hundreds of visitors who had gathered outside St Mary Magdalene Church.
Some had queued from the early hours of Wednesday morning in the hope of seeing the Royal Family.
'Bumpy' year
The Queen's attendance at church precedes her Christmas Day message - in which she will describe 2019 as quite bumpy.
She will say the path is never smooth but small steps can heal divisions.
Her message comes after a year of intense political debate over Brexit, as well as a number of personal events affecting the Royal Family, such as the controversy over her son Andrew and her husband's health.
Prince Phillip returned to Sandringham on Christmas Eve after spending four nights in hospital.
He was taken to King Edward VII's Hospital in London on Friday on the advice of his doctor.
The 98-year-old retired from public life in August 2017 and his last public appearance was at Lady Gabriella Windsor's wedding in May.
Prince Andrew's presence at Wednesday's early service follows a Newsnight interview in which he was questioned about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
It was after that interview that it was announced Prince Andrew would retire from public life.
The Earl of Wessex and his daughter Lady Louise Windsor also arrived for the Christmas morning church service.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend this year's church service as they are in Canada taking a break from royal duties with their son Archie.
Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have released a new photograph showing the duke kissing his youngest son, Louis, alongside Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
The picture was posted by Kensington Palace on Twitter with the message: Merry Christmas to all our followers!
In her traditional message to the UK and Commonwealth, broadcast on BBC One and Radio 4 at 15:00 GMT on Christmas Day, the Queen will say the path is never smooth but small steps can heal divisions.
It is a choice of words which BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell says will inevitably prompt speculation about what it is that she's referring to.
The head of state - who is publicly neutral on political matters - will also use her message to highlight the 75th anniversary of the World War Two D-Day landings.
She will reflect on how former sworn enemies joined together in friendly commemorations to mark the milestone this year.

10 Things to do in Cambridge Travel Guide | London Day Trip video transcript:
Today we are here at Kings Cross station and we are going on yet another day trip. Another one. Where are we off to? Another day trip from London. We're off to Cambridge today.
There are a number of trains from Kings Cross to Cambridge with journeys ranging from 45 minutes to a little over an hour and a half. Buying your ticket in advance is always a good idea as you can get a better price, and it’s also wise to travel off peak.
If you decide to walk into town like we did, Cambridge University Botanic Garden makes for a nice little stop. The garden has over 8000 species.
It is lunchtime for us and we've walked over to the Regal. Apparently this used to be a hotel, then a cinema and now it is a pub. I've ordered breakfast and Sam is having lunch. I'm waiting for my eggs benedict and I think you're having a Steak and Ale Pie? And a pint of Guinness
Feeling stuffed from that pub fare, we started making our way into town, and it wasn’t long before we came across the River Cam which was teaming with punters. Some made it look easy, while others were struggling, but we had a different idea and decided to go visit one of the colleges.
As a fun fact: The University of Cambridge was founded in 1209, just a few decades after Oxford University, making it the second oldest university in the English-speaking world. It is divided into 31 independent colleges, and our first one of the day was Queens College.
The most popular thing to do here in Cambridge aside from of course exploring the University is to go punting. It is very crowded out there.
So next up we're inside the Great Saint Mary's Church and we're going to be climbing the tower because apparently these are the best views of all of Cambridge. We like to climb towers.
The spiralling staircase is quite narrow and it has to accommodate traffic going up and down, which requires being a contortionist at times, but that’s how you earn those views!
Next up we are doing Trinity College and this is the largest college here at Cambridge University and also it was founded by Henry VIII.

The young royals were with the Queen, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at St. Mary Magdalene Church.

The Queen and Royal Family attend Sandringham Christmas Day church services
Members of the Royal Family are attending Christmas Day church services in Sandringham in Norfolk.
The Queen arrived without her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was released from hospital on Tuesday.
Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, who has stepped back from royal duties, arrived for an earlier service at St Mary Magdalene Church.
Other Royal Family members attended the main 11am service, with their arrival watched by a large crowd.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte joined the annual Christmas church gathering for the first time.
