Amsterdam
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Amsterdam — Europe's best-preserved 17th-century city — is simultaneously quaint and jarring, traditional and modern. Filled with history and still happy-go-lucky, it's a delight to explore. Uniquely entertaining Amsterdam shows off its Rembrandts and Van Goghs, more bikes than cars, flirting prostitutes, and pot-filled coffeeshops — all under tall, skinny facades leaning out over placid canals.

Dutch supermarket chain caters to the lonely
(6 Dec 2019) LEAD IN:
In many societies around the world, loneliness is a growing public health problem, particularly among the elderly who are widowed, or whose children may have moved far away.
In one town south of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, a local supermarket is trying to help, and its initiatives are proving popular with those seeking small interactions to boost their day.
STORY-LINE:
For many, heading down to the local supermarket to do the grocery shopping is a mundane chore, rather than a social highlight.
But for 89-year-old Bart de Wilt, a shopping trip in his hometown of Vlijmen, south of Amsterdam, can really brighten up his day.
Today he's shopping at the Jumbo supermarket, and it's not just the grocery range that attracts him here.
It's also the opportunity to see some friendly faces, share a joke, and perhaps sit down for a coffee as well.
According to research published by the Dutch public agency Volksgezondheidenzorg (Public Health and Care), such outlets can be hard to find for many people in the Netherlands.
The agency reported in 2016 that 43% of adults say they are lonely, and it also estimates that 10% of adults have psychological problems linked to feeling socially isolated.
Experts say, as the Dutch population rapidly ages, the problem is becoming more acute.
That's where this supermarket comes in, with initiatives like this one - the coffee corner, set up amid the shopping aisles.
Here there are also shoppers who want to take a short break, a bit of a rest. Most of them are elderly people, but there are also other shoppers who want to have a break while shopping. And here (at the coffee corner), you can get in to contact with each other, which normally doesn't happen when you walk in and do your grocery shopping, explains Bart de Wilt.
Indeed, slowing down at the supermarket goes against the grain of what many supermarkets have been doing.
But here, local manager Dick de Fijter says, a slower pace is proving a hit.
And it's not just the coffee corner that keeps shoppers coming.
What we see here is the chatter checkout, our new initiative. It's connected to the coffee corner. This is actually the opposite of self-checkouts (which) help fast processing grocery sales quickly. Here it takes a bit longer to process your payment. And people appreciate this, and also see it as an additional service offered by our supermarket. They can make a choice between self-checkouts, or a chatter checkout, he says.
For Bart de Wilt, the chatter checkout is preferable to the self-checkout, any time.
A retired farmer, he enjoys sharing a word with the cashier on his shopping trips, and sometimes even shares his farming knowledge by making observations about the products for sale.
It's a nice interaction to reflect on, as he makes his way back home, a lonely trip since Bart De Wilt's wife Jo de Wilt died, five years ago.
Here, home on his own, a 24-hour satellite channel streaming classical music concerts helps with the sense of isolation.
But it's been a tough few years for Bart de Wilt, especially the first two years after Jo de Wilt's death.
I have noticed that returning home is the most difficult part. When I am alone at home, it's not easy to deal with loneliness. But still, the hardest part is coming back home to an empty house, he says.
As self-checkout technology has grown more popular, opponents have occasionally drawn connections between speeding up grocery trips and the loss of social connections.

DDSW'18 - Hackathon City of Amsterdam - s2e8
Litter, asset management, nuisance reduction and neighborhood developments are among the most important developments to make Amsterdam an even more livable city.
Image recognition has huge potential to steer urban development in the right direction. Did you know that the whole city of Amsterdam is openly available as high-resolution panoramic images? This has inspired some companies to improve their own image recognition tools. The opportunities are endless. In the US for example, researchers have tracked gentrification. In this hackathon, we aim to explore image recognition techniques, in order to track urban developments the city government should respond to. We will focus on four developments.
Neighborhood developments (gentrification and commercialization)
Citizen reporting (meldingen)
Asset management
Law enforcement (from advertising taxes to hospitality nuisance)
During this two day hackathon, Policy experts from Amsterdam local government will explain these challenges in more detail. We will use open data of the city of Amsterdam and other available open data. We aim to get insights so Amsterdam can grow to become a more responsive city. Image recognition is used to spot what the local government should do to make Amsterdam’s residents happier
Long Live Amsterdam: Saskia Sassen - Leve Amsterdam - De mondiale stad
The terms gentrification and density are not quite sufficient in capturing the issues on the housing market in a growing number of cities worldwide, according to sociologist Saskia Sassen. She points out an underestimated trend: that of urban land grabs by major corporations, also in Amsterdam. At the same time the modest middle and working classes –often the majority of urban residents– increasingly cannot afford to live in cities that may have been home to many generations. What does this trend tell us about cities in today’s global world? And what does this say about Amsterdam and its ever more tense housing market?
Saskia Sassen is the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology and Member, The Committee on Global Thought, Columbia University ( She is the author of several books and the recipient of diverse awards and mentions, ranging from multiple doctor honoris causa to named lectures and being selected for various honors lists. Her recent book is Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy (Acco). She will share her vision on the future of cities worldwide and will ask policy makers and experts in Amsterdam to formulate their own answers. After her speech professor Urban and Regional Planning Zef Hemel will join the discussion.
About Long Live Amsterdam
The stakes were high for our national elections, but for the people who want to exert influence on their local neighborhood, community and streets, the municipal elections of March 21th 2018 is a crucial moment. What should Amsterdam be like in ten years from now? Amsterdam is more crowded than ever, the housing market is under pressure and tension between poor and rich, white and black and low and high educated people is still there. That’s why De Balie invites interesting international and national speakers to fuel the debate in Amsterdam with their vision and expertise. All visions will come together in the run-up to the big municipal debate organized on March 20th!

Haar laatste boek Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy (Acco) werd alom geprezen.
Over Leve Amsterdam

Dutch food street
Tasting local cuisine is one of the most enjoyable moments of any trip. However, time constraints or budget does not always allow us long and frequent trips to restaurants during the trip. In this case, street food is a great option! Moreover, the Amsterdam offers us such a wide variety of delicious and cheap meals. Here everyone can find something for themselves. Street-ft integral part of modern Amsterdam, if you haven't tried at least one of these dishes, you can say you visited Amsterdam!
1. DUTCH HERRING
Dutch herring
The first thing to try is, of course, the famous Dutch herring. This delicate salted herring, which literally melts in your mouth. Season fishing of herring is permitted from mid-may to mid-July. Fresh catch and is called “New Dutch” Hollandse Nieuwe. Herring is usually served with chopped onions and slices of pickles. If the herring are not sliced, it should be there in a special way – herring it is necessary to grasp the tail, throw back your head, open your mouth... and just leave out the herring in the mouth, or, if this trick is for you to take a bite. Another traditional option of serving a Dutch herring is herring with bread and onions.
2. FRIES FRITES
Frites / fries
Fries is incredibly popular not only among tourists but also among the local population. Literally on every corner of Amsterdam's city centre are tents, where they sell Frites, French fries in a paper bag with a variety of sauces – ranging from popular to mayonnaise sauce curry, sometimes serving is also generously sprinkled with onions. One of the most popular and oldest places selling Dutch frites is Vleminckx Sausmeester. However, in order to taste the best, according to experts, the frites of Amsterdam, you have to defend a large enough queue. If you have no time to defend this place, but the fries you still really want to try, you can use the local network of fast food cafes FEBO. Cafes operate in automatic mode – you throw a coin in the correct box of the machine, it opens and you can get out of your chosen dish and it's not just fries, but also a variety of burgers and fried pies with meat and vegetable fillings.
3. CROQUETTES / BITTERBALLEN
Meat croquettes
Continuing the theme of Dutch fried street food, we cannot ignore the Dutch croquettes – a dish of meat or fish minced meat or vegetables breaded and deep fried.
Especially popular meat croquettes Bitterballen Bitterballen. It is believed that in the 19th century they began to prepare Dutch housewife, to use up the leftovers of the stew.
Today, these meat croquettes are sold in local cafes and bars, most often as a snack to beer.
