Unique statues created from different gem stones
(24 Jan 2019) LEADIN:
A private Russian collector is resurrecting the unique art of stone-cutting by commissioning more and more sophisticated works from local artisans.
Thanks to the collector's personal interest, local family traditions of the famed house of Faberge are being revived but in a completely new form in the Russian town of Yekaterinburg.
STORYLINE:
The statues in this collection are made from semi-precious stones in the so-called volume mosaic technique.
Unlike solid stone statues, they are made of fragments of different stones carefully selected to match in colour and pattern and then fitted to one another.
Stones such as agate, hematite, quartz, marble and other semi-precious stones are used as raw materials for the production with some small elements made of metal.
It's hard to believe that some metal-looking parts of the statues are made of stones too, for example, this chain mail is made of jasper, while the shoulder straps are made of pyrite.
Other materials include everything from rock crystal to fossilised wood.
Art historian Lyudmila Budrina explains that the technique of volume mosaic has existed in Europe for quite a long time, and the history of this type of stone-cutting art has lasted several thousand years - but it has had its ups and downs.
Now this technique is popular once again. The main feature of these works is their size. There are no more works indeed anywhere else that would have a similar scale, and a similar level of complexity of the production, she says.
According to Budrina, the technology of volume mosaic flourished at the Florentine court of Medici during the Renaissance. Spreading through Europe in the 17th century, it was closely associated with court culture.
In Russia, it gained popularity at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries in the works of the House of Faberge and Aleksey Denisov-Uralskiy.
However, the size and complexity of composition never reached this level in the past.
The bigger statues in the collection are 80 centimetres tall, weigh around 100 kilogrammes and are produced by a team of artists.
Budrina says that in order to create works of this level an artist needs to learn for 20-25 years. The amount of material used (for each statue) is ten times more (than the final statue weight). The average output in terms of statue weight is 10 percent of the material used. For the sculpture which weighs 100 kilograms about a ton of the original semi-precious raw material was used.
That is why the revival of this art would not have been possible without modern patronage.
This particular collection was created thanks to a family of Russian businessmen, the Shmotyevs, living in Yekaterinburg.
It is difficult not to deal with this kind of art, not to collect it, because it makes you love it, there is a lot of energy and warmth in it, even though it is a cold stone, different meanings, some kind of power, spirit, Shmotyev says.
The collector's personal passion for Russian history determined the choice of characters in the collection.
Heroes from Russian history, Russian epics, of Russian folklore, culture and history are featured such as Genghis Khan, or St. George.
Grigory Ponomaryov, an artist who made several statues in the collection, has been working as a stone-cutter since he was 14 years old.
According to Ponomaryov, the collectors set a new level of craftsmanship by ordering more complex and large-scale figures than were made before.

VLOG - WALKING AROUND ST PETERSBURG | ALEXANDER GARDEN | BRONZE HORSEMAN | SUPER MARKET IN RUSSIA
In the afternoon of our first day in St Petersburg,we visited Alexander Garden (Aleksandrovsky Sad). This small picturesque garden is situated between Admiralty, St. Isaacs Cathedral and the Senate Square with the Bronze Horseman Statue. It exits with one side at the Admiralty Embankment on the Neva River. You'll see many monuments to famous Russian art and science personalities. In front of a Admiralty Building there is a beautiful fountain.Lovely park to wander through, many vendors selling souvenirs and also many Music Artists performing there.
The Bronze Horseman is a monument to Peter the Great, the founder of Saint Petersburg, located on the Senate Square. The monument was made of bronze with his horse rearing above the snake of treason. Its inscription reads ‘To Peter I from Catherine II – 1782’.
We strolled along the bank of Neva River with amazing view of boats, vessels in the water.
Then We went to a super market and bought food and water. Prices are reasonable.Buying food from super market is a better option to save money.

STORYLINE
Ever since thieves stole the round-rimmed wire spectacles from the nose of Havana's John Lennon statue shortly after it was unveiled in 2000, four retirees have been working 12-hour day and night shifts to ensure they don't go missing again.
One of the guards, 89-year-old Juan Gonzalez, smokes up to seven short cigars during a typical day of observing the statue from a nearby bench. He brings a slab of cardboard to sit on and retreats to the porches of nearby homes if there's a downpour of rain.
They were placed just like this and someone came and took them away. Afterwards, they were replaced and stolen again twice, explains Gonzalez.
The original spectacles were bronze but now they are an alloy that's more gold-coloured than the grayish hue that the rest of the statue has taken on over the years. Devoid of lenses, the glasses have no monetary value, except maybe to collectors.
Famous circular-framed sunglasses that Lennon wore during a tour of Japan in 1966 reportedly fetched more than 2 (m) million US dollars (1.3 (m) million euros) during an Internet auction last summer and in November someone swiped the glasses off a similar statue of Lennon in his hometown of Liverpool.
In the Havana incarnation, Lennon sits cross-legged on a bench in a park named after him amid the crumbling mansions of Vedado neighbourhood.
He is the only western musician to be honoured with a statue here and at his feet, written in concrete is You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one in Spanish.
Gonzalez and the other guards keep the glasses with them unless a visitor asks that they be put on for pictures.
Fidel Castro said he was sorry never to have met Lennon while speaking at the inauguration of the statue, erected to mark the 20th anniversary of former Beatle's murder in December 1980.
Today the Beatles are popular in Cuba. State television airs videos of their concerts and while musicians across the island pay homage to them with tribute bands.
But the band was banned from state airwaves together with such legends as the Rolling Stones and Cuban jazz greats who fled after Castro took power in 1959.
Though they remained popular among Cubans throughout the 1960s, the Beatles were officially seen as personifying selfish consumerism while the government was promoting selflessness and hard work.
But most visitors still wonder why Lennon, who never visited or sang about Cuba, has a statue in Havana.
I was surprised to see it, yeah, I didn't expect to see it, you don't expect to see something English, a statue in commemoration of them. It's brilliant, said Irish tourist, Theresa McDermett.

Our First Night In A Mongolian GER!!
Even though we love to take the reins and travel on our own, #Mongolia was just too hard to plan out ourselves, so we decided to book a 7 day tour of Central Mongolia. Today we start our journey! We made our way to Terelj National Park from Ulaanbaatar, visiting the Genghis Khan Equestrian Statue along the way. Based on the short drive there we are in for some epic landscape views while in Mongolia!

A man carrying a Cheetah with him in a taxi
A taxi driver astounded when a customer, accompanied with a cheetah climbed into the taxi in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. The customer sat in the front seat beside the driver, while the cheetah sat on the man's knees in the same seat. The Cheetah did not appear to be aggressive towards the driver or the occupants of the taxi, as he appeared calmly.
Meanwhile in Russia: Elephants Walk Around Town
You don't have to go to India to see an elephant in the street. The locals of a Russian town Zlatoust could recently enjoy such a scene, as a French circus came there on tour, and its tailed artists needed some fresh air and a good walk to then impress spectators with their performance.
