Lucca, Italy Christmas 2011 - My son cant decide which horse to ride on carousel
Coming back from the tower of Pisa, we took a train and stopped at Lucca! My favorite little town! My son wanted to ride the horse carousel and couldnt decide what he wanted to ride and by the time he found the perfect horse, the ride was over.
Indecisive, just like my mom.
Lucca, Italy is the perfect little town with the best food ever. If you are looking for a hide away spot for a bed and breakfast, this is the one town I would stay at for sure! A week here and a week somewhere in Southern Italy and maybe a week in Mestre (Venice).

Detached villa for sale in Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany.
Bagni di Lucca (Lucca). This beautiful villa for sale in Bagni di Lucca, charming Tuscan village at 130 metres above sea level, could be a very good bargain! Here’s why:
Bagni di Lucca is a nice tourist resort, with general stores, bars and restaurants, shops, a theatre, a public library, sport centres (from kayak, canyoning, rafting, tennis, mountain biking, horseback riding etc.) and a beautiful spa, beloved destination of artists like Byron, Shelley, Puccini, Metternich and Radestsky. Bagni (that’s how it is often called by the locals) has long been a spa town for the Italian people starting with the Etruscan and Romans. It is also popular for its monuments: the English Church, the Catene bridge, the villas, the Casino (the first gambling house ever to be opened in Europe, nowadays wonderful location for wedding receptions).
The villa is surrounded by a manicured lawn with only a few trees and rose bushes, allowing easy maintenance and an elegant final result.
This property is currently lived by two families, siblings who have decided to divide the villa into two separate apartments on two floors, sharing the beautiful external area.
Because it is offered on the market as a whole, we would suggest it to those of you who are either interested in buying it for two families or who intend to live in one unit and rent the other.
The internal division of this property could be rearranged: i.e. the second kitchen, second living room etc could be turned into additional bedrooms or bathrooms depending on your needs, creativity and budget, or left as they are.
The villa is on two floors plus an attic, an under roof area and a basement. It is south facing and filled with light.
This beautiful villa for sale in Bagni di Lucca comprises:
1 garage
1 utility room
1 spacious cantine with wood burning oven, fireplace and extra room to allocate a kitchenette, provided permission is given.
2 kitchens
2 spacious living rooms with burning fireplace
6 bedrooms
3 bathrooms + 1 toilet
1 covered and paved external area

I am in the city of Lucca in Northern Italy close by to Pisa this autumn 2019 to hopefully make a feature film featuring the actor Morgan Freeman – the film is called LUCCA MORTIS … and - as a foretaste, as a preamble, as an investigative prologue to that project- I will be in Lucca in June this year 2019 conducting a six-day film-workshop - talking about my cinema in general – its characteristics, origins and ambitions - as a background to this film in association with some 60 hours of Greenaway film-making in all screen guages and aspect-ratios and for many different purposes.
What is the film LUCCA MORTIS all about, how do I conceive it – how do I intend to make it and present it?
Why indeed make this film? Why indeed make cinema in the first place? Is cinema a private occupation of emotional therapy? Is cinema a short cut to fame and riches? Is cinema a means to an end to score political capital and achieve political change?
Is cinema a place to make civilised comment on mortality? Or – as so many people are now saying – is cinema dead already after only some 120-odd years?
Are you wasting your time with a dead art-form and a soon to be defunct commercial enterprise? What do we hope of the cinema of the future – if indeed it has one?
The film LUCCA MORTIS is primarily about an elderly man seeking a happy death.
Is a happy death nowadays even possible?
Are we all living too long unnecessarily?
Has a happy death ever been possible?
The most important and significant phenomenon of our lives can be considered to be our beginnings and ends – what the ancient Greeks indeed called Eros and Thanatos. Sex and death.
We each live between a copulation and a death. Most feature films feature a sexual coupling – or seem to hope to - and certainly feature a death. Sex and death.
Is this the very stuff of cinema? Just consider the last ten films you have seen. There very probably was a copulation and almost certainly there was a death.
The film LUCCA MORTIS is also about History. Is there such a thing as History? Or are there only simply Historians - and History, being so subjective - at best can only be a branch of literature?
How does the cinema view History? Most people gather their knowledge (erroneously) about History from the Cinema –- Gone with the Wind, Gladiator, the Favourite. Indeed most people gather their knowledge about History’s Future from the Cinema. Metropolis, Alien, Star Wars, Bladerunner. And Cinema most readily provides the new mythologies of civilisation and these are usually based on the old mythologies – just think of the Marvel Comics Industry. Is not all art a remake? And not just for commercial reasons.
In the film we are in the year two thousand and one and LUCCA MORTIS as a film is intended to be a portrait of a city over two thousand years old, characteristically built around the construction of towers – each tower built to be larger than its neighbour –
as aspirations for acknowledgement, for recognition, for glory and for power …. often ending inevitability in hubris.
….. and it almost inevitably includes reference to the great city of towers that is New York with the destruction of the New York Twin towers in 2001.
For the students attending the 6 day course there will be visits to all the 52 Lucca locations, photographing all the 101 church facades photographed by the film’s writer’s wife, visits to all the summits of the Lucca towers, experiencing horse-riding around the filled-in Lucca moat and a visit to to the Carrara Michelangelo quarries, plus copious time for lectures on painting into cinema, multiple-screen cinema, film editing, use of cinema music etc. and some 60 hours of Greenaway film-making in all screen guages and aspect-ratios.
Four characters – a New York writer, his photographer-wife and their daughter and the daughter’s lover – discuss and argue the issues of power and mortality and immortality and longevity and suicide and euthanasia - they are all in the process of writing and publishing books and fictions – the books will be published alongside the film - providing opportunities to consider whether or not that cinema is only filmed literature – do we really have a pictorial cinema or is the cinema we practice simply only illustrated text?
This is an opportunity indeed to ask and debate if, in fact, have we seen any true cinema at all yet?
