Macau Travel Tips | How Expensive Is Macau?
How expensive is Macau? In our Macau travel tips guide to Macau, China we cover arriving from the airport, accommodations, local transportation, casinos, Portuguese architecture and ruins and free attractions in the city. We explore what to see and do and local must eats including what we loved about Macau along with what we hated about Macau. Now let's explore the cost of travel in Macao, China in depth!
Official Exchange Rate = $1 USD = 7.99 Macanese Pataca (current as of February, 2017)
*Tip* Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted in Macau so that is an option for paying for food, souvenirs and experiences. However, Macanese Pataca is not accepted in Hong Kong so be sure to spend your coins before heading back to Hong Kong.
*Check out our best things to do in Macau travel guide video =
Arriving to Macau from Hong Kong, Mainland China and elsewhere
1) TurboJET ferry from Hong Kong (takes about an hour and economy class is about $21-$24 USD - cheaper on weekdays). Frequent departures from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and Hong Kong International Airport
2) Helicopter from Hong Kong (over $500 one way and takes less than 20 minutes)
3) Bus from mainland China (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc)
4) Budget flight from SE Asia or other elsewhere. Sometimes cheaper than flying into Hong Kong. Worth checking prices to confirm.
5) From the airport public buses and taxis are a cheap and efficient way to get to your hotel
Accommodations in Macau
1) Hostel in Macau - (basically non-existant)
2) 2 star or 3 star Hotel in Macau ($88 to $161 USD)
3) 3 star or 4 star Hotel in Macau ($120 to $600 USD)
4) AirBnB in Macau or apartment in Macau (rental) - (for a private room $40 to $60 USD and for your own apartment $80 to $200+)
*Note* Accommodations are expensive in Macau with essentially no budget options. Consider staying in Hong Kong and going on a day-trip or just biting the bullet and paying more than you budget elsewhere for a decent hotel.
Local Transportation around Macau
1) On foot (FREE! Great way to sightsee in Taipa and around Senado Square)
2) Casino and Hotel shuttle buses (absolutely FREE and how we got around when traveling any distance)
3) Local Bus (local price = 3.20 to 5.00 MOP)
4) Taxi (starting at 17 MOP and most rides are 50 MOP or less)
5) Cycle Rickshaw (local price = 200 MOP for a city tour)
Our prefered way to get around was by foot when distances were close and by free casino and hotel shuttles when distances were not within comfortable walking distance. We literally paid ZERO for our transportation and you can easily do this as well.
Macau Free Attractions (Free things to do in Macau)
1) Senado Square
2) Ruins of St. Paul's
3) Hotels and Casinos
4) Taipa Village
5) Free Samples of street food
Things to do in Macau (Macau must see)
1) Macau Tower (130 MOP for adults and 70 MOP for seniors and kids)
2) City of Dreams House of Dancing Water Spectacular (580 Hong Kong Dollars for adults and 406 HKD for kids)
3) Gambling (oh my gosh you could spend as much or as little as you want)
What to eat in Macau (Macau street food and local eats)
1) Eggs Tarts
2) Pork Chop Bun
3) Durian ice cream
4) Jerky
5) Almond Cookies
6) Portuguese wine
Macau Travel Tips | How Expensive Is Macau?
Things we LOVED about Macau (I love Macau)
1) Free to visit the hotels and casinos for shopping and entertainment (aside from gambling area)
2) Great street food options throughout the city
3) Cool Portuguese architecture and ruins
3) Easy as a day trip from Hong Kong
5) Free Transportation with casino and hotel shuttles
Things we HATED about Macau (I love Macau)
1) Lack of budget accommodations
2) Crowded around major attractions by midday
3) Potentially choppy ferry ride from Hong Kong
Final Thoughts
Macau is definitely worth a visit - especially if you're combining your trip with a visit to Hong Kong. Macau offers enough in terms of attractions even for non-gamblers to have a good time on a day trip from Hong Kong. For those wanting to gamble, enjoy nightlife and entertainment (shows) then a few days in Macau would be your best bet.

MACAU | Just around the corner
Macau officially the special administrative region of the Republic of China. Less than an hour sea travel from Hong Kong.
Although originally Chinese, Macau was under the rule of the Portuguese from the 16th century until 1999, and this rich and complicated history is reflected in the eccentric city. You’ll also find a lot of European architecture around the old parts of the city. Macau is like a unique and beautiful blend of European and Asian architecture and culture.
Macau Peninsula holds the Unesco World Heritage–crowned old city centre.

To celebrate 1 year of this daily vlogging channel and the new year 2019, we #travel to #Macau. I knew nothing about the country prior to visiting so I knew it was going to be an adventure!
According to Wikipedia, Macau is an autonomous region on the south coast of #China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. A Portuguese territory until 1999, it reflects a mix of cultural influences. Its giant casinos and malls on the Cotai Strip, which joins the islands of Taipa and Coloane, have earned it the nickname, Las Vegas of Asia. Come join us on New Year's Eve in Macau.

About Me:
My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first Youtube channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!

Macau Travel Guide - Macao Day Trip from Hong Kong
Come join us for a day trip from Hong Kong (香港) as we visit Macau covering the best things to do in one day in our Macau Travel Guide (澳門 - 澳门).
We started off our day waking up early in Hong Kong to get to the ferry terminal to take a TurboJET ferry to Macao. *Important* remember to take your passport as you're crossing one special administration region in China to another (Hong Kong to Macau) and you'll need to go through immigration on both sides (it doesn't take long).
After arriving we took free transportation (provided by the casinos and hotels) to check out the Venetian Casino and Parisian Hotel. Then we were off to Taipa to mostly eat Macau street food and enjoy the old colonial architecture.
We then made our way to Senado Square, the ruins of St. Paul's and Forte Monte while munching on plenty of Macanese street food before heading back to Hong Kong on a TurboJET ferry.
As you can see you can do a lot in just one day in Macau but a few things we didn't get to do included gambling at casinos, going up Macau Tower or checking out the A-Ma temple. For more of the things we missed out on but are worth considering doing in Macau see our two lists below.

Yeah so we just got these little stickers. We're 17M and 17K and guys don't forget to bring your passport because technically you're going to a different special administrative region. You're going from Hong Kong to Macau.

Prosperous Chinese New Year - Macau greetings 恭賀新禧 - 万事如意 - 心想事成 - 財源廣進
馬司洋老師祝各位新年進步,龍馬精神 Coach Nikolas wishes you prosperous Chinese new Year 新年快 樂
恭賀新禧 - 万事如意 - 心想事成 - 財源廣進 - 吉星高照 - 年年有餘 龍馬精神 - 笑口常開 - 阖家欢乐 - 步步高陞
Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. It begins on the first day of the first lunar month (usually in late January or early February) and ends on the 15th day of the first lunar month (Lantern Festival).
Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together. Celebrations include having annual reunion dinner on Chinese New Year's Eve, setting firecrackers, giving lucky money to children, ringing the New Year bell, sending Chinese New Year greetings, dragon and lion dancing, and Niu Yangge (traditional dance in northern China).
Every year, visitors flock to Macau for Chinese New Year and during the weeks before the holiday, local residents, businesses and organizations are making preparations for a wide array of festive events to celebrate. Flowers for good luck are an important part of the season, and brighten our winter days, especially at the Taipa Houses-Museum, where visitors will find themselves in a winter kaleidoscope of blooms.
Kids will delight in the Winter at Cotai Strip, with Dreamworks stars and fabulous ice sculptures at Ice World, a 50-foot Christmas tree and real ice rink and snow falling outdoors, Kid's Dreams on Stamps at Communications Museum of Macau, A Starry Tale at the Macau Science Centre Planetarium, and Macau Tower X Tomica Exhibition and bone upon local history at the Guia Hill Military Tunnels and an exhibition of the fireworks industry. There's fun for the whole family every weekend, with street performers putting on shows at popular tourist sites outdoors and a Baby and Child Products Expo indoors.
Everyone will enjoy finding out about Macau's less-known districts through neighborhood walking tours, and now it's easier than ever with the Step Out, Experience Macau's Communities walking tour maps.
Music fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. Pop stars Candy Lo and Jason Chan will serenade us in concerts at the Macau Forum, World Heritage sites will vibrate with jazz, mini concerts and Spring Music, and harp superstar Xavier de Maistre will interpret classical favorites at the Macau Cultural Centre. Sinulog welcomes everyone to sing, dance and enjoy Filipino fare in a day-long festival.
Art buffs have a wealth of exhibits to appreciate at Macau's museums and galleries, among them the 9th Macau Design Biennial at the Museum of Art, and a range of offerings from the classical - Arts of the Masters of Xiling Seal Society, Luoyang pottery, and - to the contemporary- Yue Minjun Contemporary Sculpture, Hong Wai Pop Ink - and everything in between at the Art Fair at 5 Outubro Street.
Macau is more than ever an adventure for shoppers, with the Hong Kong Trendy Buying Expo 2014 in town this month, the Tap Seac Flower and Gift Market, and the Taipa Flea Market adding to the fun.
While it's a bustling, busy month, there are still some chances to relax, with a cup of fragrant tea at the Tea Culture House, wine sampling at the Wine Museum, a visit to historic temple for quiet contemplation, or a Harbor Cruise to get away from it all. Macau has something for everyone to enjoy all month long, with the Experience Macau app, free citywide WiFi Go, 'Macau Budget Hotels Site, the Audio Guide Service and Tourism Hotline to smooth your journey in the city.
Macau- DJ Sun
Qingxi is a 50-minute soundtrack inspired by an ancestral quest of DJ Sun and photographer Jasmine Lee Richardson. The project was originally commissioned in 2015 by Asia Society Texas Center (ASTC) and produced as an audio visual performance by DJ Sun and Richardson’s company, Everyday is Sunday.
This quest focused on DJ Sun’s Chinese ancestor (Soon Sam Sin), who departed in 1858 from the South of China via Macau to Suriname, South America as an indentured servant. Soon Sam Sin’s historical travels were investigated by DJ Sun and Richardson during a 10-day trip, generously funded by ASTC. The journey led to a creative impulse to develop the album “Qingxi,” named for the city in the Dongguan region of South China from which Sam Sin originated.
This uniquely derived soundtrack is composed of 7 chapters, each of which fluidly meld the real-life experiences of DJ Sun during his investigation and those imagined for his ancestor. The end product yields the fine balance of an artistic assumption and the factual documentation of an important event not only for DJ Sun, but in the wider scope of 19th century migratory patterns as well.

Because Macau’s historical district is still intact, we could literally walk the paths
that my ancestor may have traversed on his way to embarkation to Suriname. Macau
would be his final Chinese “home,” as he would never seen the land again once arriving in
Suriname. Thus, a nostalgic atmosphere joined us as we, guided by Professor Francisco
Pineiro, visited significant architectural landmarks and places as they related to
activities in 1858. The vast and textural landscape was astounding, most notably the
Barracoons, where indentured servants were held; the old harbor; tea and the ceremony
of tea; opium and gambling houses; and the old Buddhist temple. We could see as well
how the European influence from it’s Portuguese grasp created a confluence of cultures.
(China part 2) Macau: Pictures, Music, Videos
Leaving Hong Kong, I took a turbojet ferry over to the autonomous territory of Macau. Because it was a Portuguese colony for 400 years, there’s a fusion of Chinese and Portuguese culture in their food, customs, and architecture. When I arrived in the terminal, I walked to meet up with my guide, Mr. Li. After I found him, we walked to meet up with the driver and then took a ride downtown to check out Kum Ian Tong temple (01:57). As we walked through the open gateway of the temple, the smell of incense hanging from the walls and from the prayer pots was the first to catch my attention. As we made our way through the different halls of the temple, we saw other people lighting incense and burning joss paper as a tribute to ones that’ve died. In one room, there’s wooden placards with pictures of deceased couples (03:52). Some of the pictures have more than one woman in it as Mr. Li explained polygamy was often the norm back then. After that, we traveled to the border gate with China (05:21). Every day, hundreds of people cross back the border from the mainland and from the mainland to Macau.
Next it was onward to the National Museum of Macao (08:05) to check out some of the local artifacts left over from the Portuguese colonization. Right outside of the museum is the and Ruin of St. Paul’s (13:07), the foundation of a Portuguese-built Jesuit church. Walking down the former church’s steps, there’s a heavily crowded street filled with shops and restaurants which we walked down en route to Senado Square (14:30). In the square we stopped at the Macau Cathedral, the Leal Senado government building, and Central Post Office.
After that, we walked a while down one of the side streets and met up with the driver. From there we traveled to Macau tower and convention center where I had some lunch (15:45). There’s a bungee type ride there where they strap you into a harness and slingshot you up to a high point of the tower but I decided to skip it. From there we went to Macau’s casino district (17:18). I was amazed at how it has a lot of the same casinos as Las Vegas has like the Parisian, the Venetian, MGM Grand, and the Wynn. Also, there’s the story about how gangster Broken Tooth Koi, leader of the 14k triad and one of the most notorious gangsters in Chinese history, set up shop here again after he got out of a 15-year prison stint! However, the Chinese government has been cracking down on corruption, keeping this guy in check for the most part. To me, it felt just like Las Vegas but without all the decadence: no rude drunks, half/fully naked women, advertisements for strip clubs…at least not out in the open like Vegas. We drove to the Venetian and I got out and walked around for an hour and ½. Inside, it looks just like the one on the Vegas strip with high-end shops, heavy crowds, and dozens of tables of all different types of games to gamble on (18:44). The biggest difference from Vegas was that it was 99% Chinese people there…shocking, huh? In fact, I was the only non-Asian guy as far as my eye could see. I was a bit surprised that not even one Occidental person was walking around (other than me). Might have just been the time of day, lol.
The last location of the day was the, A-Ma temple (23:20), one of the oldest Daoist temples in Macau. Named after the Daoist sea goddess Matzu, it’s said that when the Portuguese arrived they named Macau after this temple. Inside, just like in most temples, the smell of incense fills the air and a feeling of calmness sets in, melting away the stress of the crowded casino areas we were at earlier. After the temple, it was getting late and I had a ferry to catch back to Hong Kong so we met up with the driver and made our way back to the ferry pier (25:38). After I got off the ferry, I was held in customs for 15 minutes sitting on a cold steel bench while they examined my passport. When I got my passport back, I met up again with a worried Mrs. Helen who joked they must really like me at customs. I thought to myself I’m sure that wasn’t the real reason they held me for so long lol. We met up with the driver who took me back to my hotel in Kowloon.
Macau was a very interesting blend of two different cultures and because of the legalization of gambling, one of the most unique places to visit in China. My only regret is there wasn’t enough time to try some of the Macanese cuisine there which, from my understanding, is a mixture of Cantonese and Portuguese dishes. Besides missing that I believe I got to experience most of what Macau has to offer. For the music, I used a lot of Asian-themed songs but also old & new-school hip-hop. This was probably the hardest one of my videos to think of interesting music for!
The next video is about the third leg of my trip across China: Deng Feng city and the world-famous Shaolin Temple. Here's the link:
