The mountain began to be a place of worship in 1645 when it was erected a giant wooden cross after 12 years accompanied by a statue of Our Lady of Mercy on the occasion of the plague that decimated the population of the Republic of Genoa.
In 1660 he began the construction of a chapel and in 1700 was celebrated the first mass.
On June 8, 1873 it was inaugurated a work of sculptor Antonio Brilla Savona: a statue of the Madonna five meters high that still is the veneration of the residents and which is visible from afar.
Some famous people have visited the shrine over the years:
October 18, 1879 rose HRH Crown Prince Frederick III Hohenzollern with his entire family during his stay at the Grand Hotel Mediterranee Pegli; March 28, 1893 it was the turn of Elizabeth Wittelsbach, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, the famous Princess Sissi, who was staying in the Villa Rossi in Sestri Ponente; many were, of course, instead guided by Giacomo Della Chiesa, Genoese and Pegliese of birth, the future Pope Benedict XV.

Italian Lakes Santuario della Pieta Cannobio - AHI TRAVEL
More details on this program Standing behind the town's lovely lakeside promenade is the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Pietà (Santuario della Pietà), which was commissioned by San Carlo Borromeo around 1578 to commemorate a momentous religious event. In 1522, a small painting, depicting the Virgin Mary, St. John the Evangelist and the deposition of Christ from the Cross, was reported to have bled. By divine chance, this esoteric event was followed by a devastating plague that swept through the region. The town of Cannobio seemed to escape the worst of the plague—a fact that was accredited to this mystical painting. Although this famous pietà once adorned the walls of a humble inn, it is now preserved in a niche in the Sanctuary's high altar. The Sanctuary of the Most Holy Pietà is also noted for its elegant dome, breathtaking interior and the altarpiece of the high altar.

Videos Vittorio Innocente - The Shrine of Our Lady of Montallegro of Rapallo is located inland on a hill about 612 meters high. The Sanctuary can be reached on foot, by car or in a time of 7/8 minutes by cable car from where you can admire the Gulf of Tigullio and the town of Rapallo. From December 20, 2009 an elevator connects the rack with the roadway above the square of the sanctuary, removing architectural barriers that made it difficult to achieve the religious building. It is said that on July 2 1557 the Blessed Virgin appeared to a peasant on the hill John Chichizola who had stopped here to rest before continuing their journey to their homestead. Maria asked to be worshiped with these words: Fear not, John, I am the Mother of God, I chose a messenger to my mother's will. Go by clergymen of Rapallo and lets them know that the Mother of God has chosen this place to his perpetual abode and want to be erected a church here. In confirmation of his appearance leaves a precious icon: a wooden poplar 18x15 cm depicting the transit of Mary into heaven. At the center of the tablet represents the Trinity and the soul of the Virgin Mary ascending to heaven at death painted like a child in swaddling clothes hanging in the air. The farmer went to Rapallo immediately to report the message of Mary and then accompanied the representatives of the clergy on the site `s appearance. The picture was taken to the Church of St. Gervasio and Protasio and kept in the parsonage for safety. The next morning the image was returned in the `point where Madonna had placed his feet and where she had appeared a source of water The priest returned to the mountain to bring the` icon in Rapallo, with a grand procession, where he was exposed to church all day. The next morning the picture was again Montallegro reflecting the desire of Mary to be worshiped in that place. The shrine was built - with the adjoining shelter for pilgrims - in 1558 with funds of the inhabitants. The existing marble facade was made in 1896 by the Milanese architect Luigi Rovelli and was inaugurated on June 21 of that year.
