MANDALAY - MAHA AUNG MYE BONZAN MONASTERY
Located 20 kilometers from downtown MANDALAY, MAHA AUNGMYE BONZAN MONASTERY was built in 1818 by ME NU, the primary Queen of King BAGYIDAW, for the royal abbot NYAUNG GYAN HSAYA DAW . It was extensively damaged in March 1839 by the series of earthquakes that struck Inwa and surrounding regions, likely resulting in its abandonment. In 1873, it was restored by Me Nu's daughter, HSIN-HPYU-MA-SHIN, assuming essentially the current form. Today the monastery is no longer inhabited but is maintained in good condition.

The Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery known as the Oakyaung, the brick structure was built in 1818 by Nanmadaw Me Nu, wife of King Bagyidaw, for the abbot Nyaunggan Sayadaw. A tall, stucco-decorated building, it was built in the same style as that of more common teak kyaung; yet its masonry guaranteed that it would survive longer than its wooden cousins. In the middle of the monastery is a statute of Buddha, placed on a pedestal trimmed with glass mosaic. The Okkyaung is a seven-tired prayer hall, which suffered heavy damage in the 1838 earthquake, but was repaired in 1873 by Hsin byumashin, the daughter of Nanmadaw Me Nu.

Amarapura's Mahagandhayon Monastery (Three Cities Tour, Mandalay)
Mahagandhayon Monastery / မဟာဂန္ဓရုံကျောင်းတိုက် in Amarapura / အမရပူရ မြို့နယ် is Myanmar's most prominent monastic college (at times, there are more than 3,000 monks living and studying here). The monastery is known for its strict adherence to the Vinaya - the Buddhist monastic code. The monastery was first established by Agatithuka Sayadaw, a Thudhamma-affiliated monk around 1908, as a meditation monastery for forest-dwelling monks. The monastery gained further prominence under the leadership of Ashin Janakābhivaṃsa, who began living there in 1914.
In the morning at around 10AM, the monks receive their daily food donations. They line up and then walk into the big communal hall.

Tour of Inwa or Ava (Three Cities Tour, Mandalay)
Inwa or Ava / အင်းဝမြို့ (also spelled Innwa), literally means mouth of the Lake, is an ancient imperial capital of successive Burmese kingdoms from the 14th to 19th centuries (specifically five separate occasions, from 1365 to 1842). Throughout history, it was sacked and rebuilt numerous times. The capital city was finally abandoned after it was completely destroyed by a series of major earthquakes in March 1839. Though only a few traces of its former grandeur remain today, the former capital is a popular day-trip tourist destination from Mandalay.
The Lawka Tharahpu Pagoda is by Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery with the latter popularly known as Me Nu Ok Kyaung (lit. Me Nu's Brick Monastery) which was built in 1818 by Nanmadaw Me Nu, the famous Chief Queen of Bagyidaw, for the residence of her religious Preceptor, the Nyaunggan Sayadaw. The earthquake of 1838 damaged it. In 1873, it was restored by Sinbyumashin, Queen of Mindon and a daughter of Nanmadaw Me Nu. The building is markedly different from traditional Burmese monasteries, which are constructed with wood, not masonry.
