Malhargad is a hill fort in western India near Saswad, 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Pune. It is also known as Sonori Fort due to the village of Sonori being situated at its base. The fort was named for the god Malhari and was the last fort built by the Marathas, about 1775.[1]
The Sahyadri range to the west of Pune in Velha taluka is split, and the forts Rajgad and Torna are on one branch while Forts Sinhagad, Purandar, Vajragad and Malhargad on the other. This range is known as the Bhuleshwar range which is spread along the East-West direction. The fort is believed to be built to keep watch on Dive ghat along the Pune-Saswad route. The fort was built during the period of 1757 to 1760. The fort was built by Bhivrâo Yashvant and Krishnaji Mâdhavrâo Pânsê, a Peshwa Sardar,[1] who was the chief in charge of Tofkhana of the Peshwas. Citations of a visit of Elder Madhavrao Peshwe to the fort are available in historic documents. A palace, belonging to Panse, can be seen in the Sonori village though much of it is in ruins.
The fort is in good condition. There are two temples constructed side-by-side: the smaller for Lord Khandoba, and the larger for Lord Mahadeva. From the top of this fort, the city of Jejuri and Parvati Hills can be seen. The forts of Sinhagad, Purandar, and Vajragad are also visible.

Awesome treak, one can expedite with minimal gears it's a very small expedition but one of the best for beginners. The atmosphere is great and the natural beauty is also very good. One can also visit the adjoining Hill top where there are the stone garden like hill tops...
Small but good. The last fort made by the Marathas to look over Dive Ghat. Its very easy to trek and reach there. The view is nice, its a small fort but very nice. The road to reach there is average. You can have a peaceful time there as there is very less crowd (was none when we went there). Need to carry water and food as you would not get anything there.

दिवे घाट चढून आपण वर पोहोचायचं. तिथून डावीकडे जाणारा रस्ता धरायचा आणि सोनारी गावात यायचं. सोनारी गाव हे मल्हारगडाच्या पायथ्याशी असणारं देखणं गाव आहे. अंदाजे ३१६६ फूट इतकी उंची असणा-या या गडाला सोनारीचा किल्ला असंही म्हटलं जातं. याची बांधणी सरदार भिवराव पानसे यांनी अंदाजे १७६०च्या सुमारास केली. सोनारी गावातून मळलेली पायवाट गडावर घेऊन जाते. किल्ल्याला दुहेरी तट असून प्रत्येक तटाला मोठे दरवाजे आहेत. गडावर एक तलाव आणि दोन-तीन विहिरी बांधण्यात आल्या आहेत. पण हे सर्व पाणी खूपच खराब झालं आहे. गडाला वेगळा बालेकिल्ला नाही. गडावर श्री मल्हारीचं मंदीर आजही उत्तम स्थितीत आहे. श्री खंडोबाची अश्वारुढ मूर्ती म्हाळसेसह आहे. त्याच्या पाठीमागे महादेवाचं मंदीर आहे. एकूण किल्ला आटोपशीर, पण खूप पडझड झालेल्या अवस्थेत आहे. गडावरून किल्ले पुरंदर, वज्रगड, सासवडचा परिसर उत्तम दिसतो. गडाची बांधणी करणारे सरदार भिवराव पानसे हे मराठी साम्राज्याच्या तोफखान्याचे शिल्पकार होते. त्यांनी त्या काळात आपल्या तोफखान्याचा भरपूर प्रसाद मराठ्यांच्या सर्व शत्रूंना दिला होता. पण, त्यांची समाधी मात्र सध्या पूर्ण भग्नावस्थेत आढळते. गावातच त्यांचा सहा बुरुजांनी सजवलेला वाडा आता कसाबसा तग धरून आहे. सर्व गड फिरण्यासाठी दोन तासांचा अवधी पुरेसा ठरतो. गडावर पाणी आणि अन्नाची सुविधा उपलब्ध नाही.

In today's video, I am taking you to Malhargad, a small fort located near Pune. We ride through Dive ghat to reach the #Malhargad base. The main access to the fort was from Sonori village hence it was originally known as Sonori fort.
Our journey starts at Satara Road, Pune. We ride towards Uruli Devachi village which we then cross to reach Dive ghat. Dive ghat is the first stop & we'll get to see the real beauty of the ghat i.e. pollution!
If I haven't made it clear already - It's high time we understand that throwing away plastic waste isn't going to help anyone! Please stop dumping your garbage in nature! अक्कल वापरा, कचरा करू नका!!
From dive ghat, we go towards Saswad. A left turn and we are on the way to Malhargad fort. The drive is fun all the way through. The road from Katraj to Uruli Devachi is under construction with a lot of heavy traffic.
If you are traveling by car you'll have to park it at the base of the fort as there is no road ahead. If you are going on a bike then you can go further off-roading to get closer to the fort.
The fort is in ruins of course, but the main entrance is grand & beautiful. The 'Balekilla' is the fort within the fort is completely in ruins. A couple of temples with some fortification walls are still standing. The fort also has 2 water wells & a cistern. Other details of the fort are in the video.
