Burma / Myanmar Mandalay Captured Fort Dufferin Siege and Fall March 1945 Footage
Fort Dufferin in Mandalay, Burma falls to British and Indian troops on March 20, 1945 following a 12 day siege. Includes footage of low level attacks by B25s using 2000 lb. demolition bombs with delayed action fuses. I have combined footage from two Bulletins for this one so there is a little repetition, but not too much. Most of the action is in the second part when they throw just about everything at the thick walls in an effort to breach them.
Surrounded by four massive 2km long walls and a 210 foot wide moat situated 60 feet beyond them, Mandalay Palace (renamed Fort Dufferin by the British) was a formidable obstacle to the capture of Mandalay. More information can be found here: along with a map of the fortress here:
Public domain footage from Combat Bulletin Nos. 48 and 50 produced by the US Army Signal Corps' Army Pictorial Service.

Walking Around Mandalay / မန္တလေး
Walking around Mandalay / မန္တလေး - the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Myanmar / မြန်မာ. Note that I had visited Mandalay Hill, Mandalay Palace and most of the surrounding attractions in 2014....
Mandalay is the economic centre of Upper Burma and considered the centre of Burmese culture. A continuing influx of Chinese immigrants, mostly from Yunnan, in the past twenty years, has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and increased commerce with China.
Like most former (and present) capitals of Burma, Mandalay was founded on the wishes of the ruler of the day. On 13 February 1857, King Mindon founded a new royal capital at the foot of Mandalay Hill, ostensibly to fulfill a prophecy on the founding of a metropolis of Buddhism in that exact place on the occasion of the 2,400th jubilee of Buddhism. King Mindon is the founder of Mandalay royal capital A bastion at Mandalay Palace
The new capital city site was 66 km2 (25.5 sq mi) in area, surrounded by four rivers. The plan called for a 144-square block grid patterned citadel, anchored by a 16 square block royal palace compound at the center by Mandalay Hill. The 1020-acre (413-hectare) citadel was surrounded by four 2,032 m (6,666 ft) long walls and a moat 64 m (210 ft) wide, 4.6 m (15 ft) deep. At intervals of 169 m (555 ft) along the wall, were turrets with gold-tipped spires for watchmen. The walls had three gates on each side, and five bridges to cross the moat. In addition, the king also commissioned the Kuthodaw Pagoda, the Pahtan-haw Shwe Thein upasampada hall, the Thudamma Good Dharma zayats or public houses for preaching Buddhism and a library for the Pāli Canon.
In June 1857, the former royal palace of Amarapura was dismantled and moved by elephants to the new location at the foot of Mandalay Hill, although construction of the palace compound was officially completed only two years later, on Monday, 23 May 1859.
For the next 26 years, Mandalay was to be the last royal capital of the Konbaung Dynasty, the last independent Burmese kingdom before its final annexation by the British Empire. Mandalay ceased to be the capital on 28 November 1885 when the conquering British sent Thibaw Min and his queen Supayalat into exile, ending the Third Anglo-Burmese War.
During World War II, Mandalay suffered the most devastating air raids of the war. On April 3, 1942, during the Japanese conquest of Burma, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service carried out an extensive assault on the city. As the city was defenseless and its firefighting were weak that had been lost in the earlier bombing and that they met no opposition from the British RAF as all its aircraft had by now been withdrawn to India, three-fifths of the houses were destroyed and 2,000 civilians were killed. Many again fled the city when the city was under Japanese occupation from May 1942 to March 1945. The palace citadel, turned into a supply depot by the Japanese, was burnt to the ground by Allied bombing; only the royal mint and the watch tower survived. (A faithful replica of the palace was rebuilt in the 1990s.)
In the 1980s, the city was hit by two major fires. In May 1981, a fire razed more than 6,000 houses and public buildings, leaving more than 36,000 homeless. On 24 March 1984, another fire destroyed 2,700 buildings and made 23,000 people homeless.
The 1980s fires augured a significant change in the city's physical character and ethnic makeup. Huge swaths of land left vacant by the fires were later purchased, mostly by the ethnic Han-Chinese, many of whom were recent immigrants from Yunnan. The Chinese influx accelerated after the current State Peace and Development Council came to power in 1988. With the Burmese government turning a blind eye, many Chinese immigrants from Yunnan (and also from Sichuan) poured into Upper Burma in the 1990s and many openly ended up in Mandalay. In the 1990s alone, about 250,000 to 300,000 Yunnanese are estimated to have migrated to Mandalay.
Today, ethnic Chinese people are believed to make up about 40%–50% of the city's population that is nearly the same as the natives, and are a major factor in the city's doubling of population from about 500,000 in 1980 to one million in 2008.

Central Myanmar: Ancient cities around Mandalay
Around Mandalay in central Myanmar are the ancient cities of Amarapura (city of immortality), Inwa and Mingun along the Ayeyarwady river. During this trip into an ancient past full of wonders you can also visit: Maha Ganayon Kyaung, home to several thousands of young monks, the U Bein's bridge, the longest (1200m) teak span bridge in the world and Sagaing hill with a wonderful temple.
Mandalay Palace .. Mandalay, Myanmar.mpg
Little remains of the old Amarapurapalace, but you can find two masonry buildings - the treasury building and the old watch tower - in its old grpunds. King Bagyidaw and King Bodawpaya both were cremated here on the site of theie old tombs and their ashed were placed in the velvet bags and thrown into the Ayeyarwady. The corner stupas astill stand at the 4 corners of the once square city.
Visiting Mandalay Palace, Palace in Mandalay, Myanmar
The Mandalay Palace (Burmese: မန္တလေး နန်းတော်, pronounced: [máɴdəlé náɴdɔ̀]), located in Mandalay, Myanmar, is the last royal palace of the last Burmese monarchy. The palace was constructed, between 1857 and 1859 as part of King Mindon's founding of the new royal capital city of Mandalay. The plan of Mandalay Palace largely follows the traditional Burmese palace design, inside a walled fort surrounded by a moat. The palace itself is at the centre of the citadel and faces east. All buildings of the palace are of one storey in height. The number of spires above a building indicated the importance of the area below.[1] For more info, visit this link:

Visiting Mandalay Hill, The Northeast of the city centre of Mandalay, Burma
Mandalay Hill (Burmese: မန္တလေးတောင်; MLCTS: manta. le: taung [màɴdəlé tàʊɴ]) is a 240 metres (790 ft) hill that is located to the northeast of the city centre of Mandalay in Burma. The city took its name from the hill. Mandalay Hill is known for its abundance of pagodas and monasteries, and has been a major pilgrimage site for Burmese Buddhists for nearly two centuries. At the top of the hill is the Sutaungpyei (literally wish-fulfilling) Pagoda. For more info, visit this link:

The road to Mandalay. And the rest of Myanmar, 2018.
Hi there,
During Chinese Spring Festival 2018, we managed to gather a solid group of friends to take a 3-week trip through Myanmar!
We came from all over (Germany, Czech Republic, China, Thailand), and decided to meet up in Yangon. Here we spent about 2 days, which turned out to already be enough time to get scammed!
From Yangon we took a bus to Mandalay, where we spent our days cycling around town, and taking pick-up trucks to the U-Bein bridge and a waterfall.
From Mandalay we took a 12-hour 'cruise' to Bagan, famous for its temples. We didn't really know what to expect at first, but it turned out to be a huge area full of ancient temples. The best way to get around here, is by rental e-bike. Pro-tip: Watch the sunrise. Yes, it's early, but worth it.
Afterwards, we had a bumpy ride to Kalaw. A bus ride that was supposed to last only about 6 hours (?), ended up taking the whole day, as our bus broke down. We spent the better part of our afternoon in a shabby restaurant along the main road. They had beer, though. In Kalaw we spent one night, only to do a 2-day trek starting the next morning.
The trek took us through little villages and nice scenery. At the end of the first day, we ended up at a monastery on top of a mountain, where we stayed the night. However, the wasn't much sleeping, as we first spent our time playing football with the monks until sundown, after which we played Taboos with our friend Mandalay Rum until deep in the night.
The next day, another day of hiking, all the way to Inle Lake. Here we took the local form of transportation, a wee boat, to take us to our accommodation. The rest of our time in Inle we spent cycling, taking more boats to see more sunsets and sunrises. We also managed to end up at a vineyard on top of a hill, where we saw yet another, yep, sunset.
After Inle, we decided that we had enough of the backpacking-existence. As such, we decided to take a flight back to Yangon, then a 6-hour private car to the west coast, and stay at a 5-star resort. Okay, we still took the budget option by sleeping in tents on the beach, but the beach, pool and especially breakfast, were top-notch!
After spending 5 days in the 5 star resort, we made our way back to Yangon, only to say our goodbyes and all be on our way.
Amazing trip, thanks to everyone for being there. Until next time!

Mandalay
Mandalay in Myanmar is the old citadel of Myanmar Kings of the Konebaung dynasty who ruled Myanmar or Burma for the last time before the British annexation in 1885. Much more at and with great pictures and videos.
The city is a hub and a center of culture and communication. Mandalay is accessible by air, rail, river and road and has excellent hotels, resorts and restaurants. For tourism purpose the Ayeyarwady River or Irrawaddy River is only used for the river cruise of the Road to Mandalay vessel and some other pleasure trip river ships between the city and Bagan. Some years ago, a new international airport was completed and Mandalay can be reached by air directly via international flights. Until now only by a flight from Chiang Mai in Thailand.

Want to travel Myanmar with us? We are hosting a trip on this exact same boat in November 2019, but we've added a more adventurous spin to the itinerary. Learn more here -
Thank you Paukan Cruises! Our last day of our Irrawaddy River Cruise was a great one! We sadly left the ship after 10 days and visited a pagoda with what Buddhists believe is the holiest Buddha statue in the world - the only one built during his lifetime. Next we got to see how the gold leaves that are placed on the statue are pounded for hours and hours. And lastly we visited the largest book in the world. We ended the day with traditional Burmese Barbecue, and that’s a wrap on our incredible Myanmar trip!!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

MYANMAR: The iconic NIGHT FOOD MARKETS, ROYAL CITY OF MANDALAY ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Mandalay, which is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Myanmar (Burma), and let's walk around the night food stalls that show up around sunset time on the busy 86th street, about a kilometer west form the royal palace. Mandalay is a city and former royal capital in northern Myanmar (formerly Burma) on the Irrawaddy River. In its center is the restored Mandalay Palace from the Konbaung Dynasty, surrounded by a moat. Mandalay Hill provides views of the city from its summit, which is reached by covered stairway. At its foot, the Kuthodaw Pagoda houses hundreds of Buddhist-scripture-inscribed marble slabs.
