Places to see in ( Catania - Italy )
Catania is an ancient port city on Sicily's east coast. It sits at the foot of Mt. Etna, an active volcano with trails leading up to the summit. The city's wide central square, Piazza del Duomo, features the whimsical Fontana dell'Elefante statue and richly decorated Catania Cathedral. In the southwest corner of the square, La Pescheria weekday fish market is a rowdy spectacle surrounded by seafood restaurants.
Catania is an Italian city on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea. Catania is the capital of the Metropolitan City of Catania, one of the ten biggest cities in Italy. Catania is well known for its historical earthquakes, having been destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes in 1169 and 1693, and for several volcanic eruptions from the neighbouring Mount Etna. Catania is located on the east coast of the island of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna. As observed by Strabo, the location of Catania at the foot of Mount Etna has been both a curse and a blessing. Two subterranean rivers run under the city; the Amenano, which surfaces at one single point south of Piazza Duomo, and the Longane (or Lognina).

Aruna & Hari Sharma in Excelsior Grand Hotel Room 449 Catania, Sicily, Italy Jul 12, 2013
Aruna & Hari Sharma from Uppsala University, Sweden (Socialdemokraterna, Sverige) were invited to participate and to train young Neuroscience Ph D Scholars in Neuropharmacology during an International Summer School on Innovation in CNS Drug Discovery: From Small Molecules to Biologic Therapies, Organized by Prof. Dr Filippo Drago of Dept. of Clinical & Molecular Medicine, University of Catania, Sicily. Based on the work of Cerebrolysin, a wonder drug to treat CNS injury when nanowired and also the role of endogenous antibodies in neuroprotection. Hari Sharma was asked to deliver a Key Note Address on these aspects to the young students and Faculty alike. After the Summer School Aruna & Hari spend quality time during the weekend Friday & Saturday in a peaceful environment in Excelsior Grand Hotel Catania in the downtown. They have chosen this hotel as this was one of the best hotels in Catania 22 years ago when they were in the town for receiving an award from University fo Catania in 1991. Another reason was to have a grand view of mount Etna from the room. This time also they have a room (nr. 449) with grand Etna View. But the hotel although looks charming but currently now in the state of degeneration. The staff when we entered into the hotel with luggage after a taxi ride, we had difficulties to move our luggage from the revolving door that was too small and very old. The boy who saw everything from the inside just has a volt face and he is looking at constantly. This was peculiar and absurd. That was our 1st impression. When we have completed the check-in process then he came to us and told that bow I can help you. My wife simply refused this as we could easily manage with our luggage and we did not liked his behavior at all. Although the room was OK but the furniture and bathroom utilities are very old and one could see the sign of degeneration everywhere. Two separate knobs control the hot and cold water system and often they don't mix properly. There was no sign on the knobs for opening or closing so you have to always try (particularly when you taking shower) to adjust the knobs and that did not function properly for the 80% of your bath time. As a result you have either cold water (70 % of your time) or very hot that is intolerable. Although, the location of the hotel was very good in the downtown and you could go to shopping center and restaurants that are of very good quality. Around the hotel was also not very clean but could be acceptable. Overall our stay in this classical Hotel was OK because of Etna view and downtown. The best thing in this hotel was a good air conditioning that worked under our hands (not many hotels in Sicily where they are centrally controlled and often they are kept on 24 to 25°C). The Etna view was also superb from the room too. Thus, we enjoyed this hotel as breakfast was quite good although the bowl for cereal that was kept for use was too small (30 to 50 ml capacity). However the other quality of cooked food, bakery, cheese and fruits was quite nice and the choice was great.

Places to see in ( Catania - Italy ) Palazzo Biscari
Places to see in ( Catania - Italy ) Palazzo Biscari
Palazzo Biscari is a private palace in Catania, Sicily, southern Italy.
It was built by will of the Paternò Castello family, the princes of Biscari, starting from the late 17th century, lasting for much of the following century, after the devastations of the 11 January 1693 earthquake. The new palace was built directly against the city walls (Charles V's walls), which had partially withstood the earthquake.
The oldest section was built under Ignazio, third prince of Biscari, who entrusted the project to architect Alonzo Di Benedetto. Ignazio's son, Vincenzo, commissioned the decoration of the seven large windows facing the seaside, by the Messinese sculptor Antonino Amato. Later the palace was modified under the fourth Prince, Ignazio Paternò Castello, who had it enlarged eastwards under design by Giuseppe Palazzotto and, later, by Francesco Battaglia. The building was finished in 1763 and inaugurated with big celebrations.
The palace is accessed through a large portal facing via Museo Biscari, leading to the inner courtyard, which features a large double staircase. In the interior is the Feasts Hall, in Roccoco style, with a complex decoration of mirrors, stuccoes and frescoes painted by Matteo Desiderato and Sebastiano Lo Monaco. The small dome, destined to the orchestra, has a frescoe depicting the glories of the Paternò Castello di Biscari family. It is accessed through a staircase decorated in stucco within the gallery facing the sea.
Among the other rooms are the Fief Room, featuring large canvasses of the Biscari feudataries; the Princess Apartments, built by Ignazio V of Biscari for his wife, with pavements of ancient Roman marbles; the Birds Gallery and the Don Quixote Room. There is also a museum, once housing the collection of Ignazio V, most of the material of which is now in the Castello Ursino in Catania.

Registro Aurelia - Spring Meeting 2012 of the Registro Aurelia in Catania (Sicily)
Our spring meeting this year took us to Sicily, more precisely to Catania, and the Etna. 7 Aurelias met at Genova on Thursday to board the ferry with destination Palermo. A good occasion to renew friendships, and a forced 24 hours rest before the arduous task of navigating Sicilian roads.
On arrival on Friday night we drove the 210 km separating Palermo from Catania on the central highway, arriving round midnight at the hotel, where the other participants were waiting.
On Saturday all participants left for Aci Trezza where we saw the Faraglioni, those lava spires emerging from the sea, which are said to have been thrown by the cyclop Polyphemus at Ulysse's boat. We also visited the fort at Aci Castello and the Casa del Nespolo, scene of the novel I Malaviglia by Giovanni Verga, describing the life of a poor fishermen family in Sicily in the 19th century. That novel was used by Luchino Visconti for his neorealist film La Terra Trema. The following lunch enabled us to sample fish in all its variations, accompanied by the suitable liquid products of the island. The evening gala dinner took place at Palazzo Manganelli, superb 18th century Palace in Catania, on the main floor, with doors opening on a hanging garden. It was built following the earthquake of 1693 on the remains of the 14th century house. Meanwhile our cars were exhibited on the Piazza del Duomo, enjoyed by the numerous Saturday night public.
Sunday took us on the north side on the Etna, to Feudo Vagliasindi: Rural tourism at its best, a big villa on the north side of the Etna, near Randazzo, where we tasted local specialities. Nice period winery, with enormous oak barrels. Well worth a return visit and a night stay, very nice rooms are available ( In the evening we visited Catania, and the museum of the Cathedral.
Monday saw the cars climbing the Etna, enjoying themselves on a beautiful curvy road that was constructed under Mussolini, until we reached the funivia (cablecar) that takes you from 1910 m to 2500 m. From there special all terrain IVECOS and UNIMOGS took us further up to 3000 m, where we walked to a side crater that was smoking ominously. The last buffet which we took in a mountain restaurant was suitably accompanied by local musicians, playing Sicilian songs, and opera airs from Bellini. It was already time to say good bye, and to thank the organisers, who had cared so well for us over that long week-end.
