ISLAND OF INSPIRATION
The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world’s different climate zones there, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra. From the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hamakua Coast to the jet-black sands of Punaluu Beach, the island of Hawaii is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. However you decide to experience the island, it is sure to leave you Inspired!
The sun-drenched Kohala Coast sees an annual average rainfall of only nine inches, so soak in the sun and relax on Mauna Lani’s two sandy beaches, explore the Puako Petroglyphs, indulge at local restaurants or recharge at the spa. You’ll discover cultural treasures on the Kohala Coast, too, such as the remarkable Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site, the largest restored heiau in Hawaii.
Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection is a luxury resort on the Big Island of Hawaii which is approximately 23 miles north of the Kona International Airport. It’s a 25-minute leisurely drive to the resort. Our concierge can assist you with your ground transportation.
#Hawaii Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Islands, spans 4,028 square miles and is the most southern spot in the United States. There is a rich history and culture on the island with plenty of adventure from the mountain tops to the deep blue sea.
Extensive fitness offerings are fun and approachable for all ages. Indoors and outdoor classes such as beach boot camp and stand-up paddleboard yoga are available to provide variety and challenge you.

This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 345 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below.
I think that three days on such a large island is a bit too little. The distances between the points to travel are longer than on other Hawaiian islands.
Big Island, or Hawaiʻi Island is the largest and the southeasternmost island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island of Hawaiʻi is the third largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. Administratively, the whole island encompasses Hawaiʻi County. The county seat and largest city is Hilo where I lived.

Mauna Kea - The tallest peak in Hawaii
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the mountain is under water, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea becomes the tallest mountain in the world measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft). Mauna Kea is about a million years old, and has thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. Mauna Kea-Humu'ula Trail is a 11.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Kamuela, Hawaii that features a lake and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until December.

Thanks to Stefan and his wife for helping me reach the summit of Mauna Kea.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the volcano is underwater, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) in height.
Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now considered dormant.
With its high elevation, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world.

The Big Island of Hawaii
The Big Island is the youngest Island of Hawaii, twice the size of all the other major Islands combined, covering over 4,000 square miles.
There are Twelve distinct climate zones, ranging from East Hawaii’s tropical rain forests to Mauna Kea’s frozen tundra
The Kona Coast lies immediately next to a huge ocean drop-off which descends thousands of feet to the ocean bottom. Kona is the home of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. Wether fishing from charter boats or piers, Kona gets fishermen hooked.
The Big Island, with her Crystal clear blue waters reveals a plethora of fish, sea turtles, dolphins and manta rays. Many snorkeling and scuba expeditions are open to every level of expertise. A unique experience for the advanced scuba diver is to swim into underwater lava tubes where eels, octopus and lobsters may be discovered.
The coffee plant was brought to Kona in 1828 by Samuel Ruggles. Today Kona coffee is one of the most expensive and prized coffees in the world.
Volcano is a subtropical highland community bordering Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It is near the active volcano Kilauea.
Kilauea Caldera is the longest continuously erupting volcano in the world, its present eruptive phase dates back to 1983
Driving over the new saddle highway between the Mauna Loa and The Mauna Kea is impressive. The Mauna Kea is the tallest sea-mountain in the world and, if measured from the ocean bottom, is 4000 feet taller than Mt. Everest
Cafe Pesto first opened in Kawaihae harbor in 1988 and their popular pizzas caught on and they opened their second restaurant in Hilo in 1992.
Hilo is a peaceful city with an airport, orchid farms and the recently renovated Double Tree Grand Naniloa Hotel. It was also where, in 1946 a 56-foot tsunami swept into Hilo Bay and caused 159 deaths and tore apart downtown Hilo.
Hilo had a second devastating tsunami 14 years later which destroyed downtown again.
The Pacific Tsunami Museum has exhibits which show how tsunamis have actually shaped the appearance and development of Hilo.
Nearby is the Mokupapapa Discovery Museum which explains the region’s coral reef ecosystem. A stunning 2500 gallon sea water aquarium shows some of the local reef fish.
Hawi in North Kohala is known as the bicycle turnaround point for the Ironman Triathlon each October. But it is also know for Bamboo - a Restaurant, bar and store. One of the island’s oldest restaurants, the Pacific Rim menu with fresh island fish and organic local produce is ono (delicious). The store has Hawaiian handicrafts and one of the largest selections of Aloha shirts from Torrie Richards and Avanti on the island.
King Kamehameha, believed to have been born in the North Kohala area, conquered most of the Hawaiian Islands unifying them into the Kingdom of Hawaii.
Today the Big Island is more like the Kingdom of Golf. With 22 golf courses, the region has some of the top rated courses in the world. At the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Golf Course, is a new addition for getting around the course called golfboards. You can surf the course on a GolfBoard which is a core workout attuned to snowboarding or surfing. It also speeds up the pace of play making an average round of 18 holes on the GolfBoard in only 2 hours and 37 minutes.
The Mauna Lani Resort features two championship courses, the Francis H. I’i Brown North and South Courses. There are some unique features on Mauna Lani’s courses Including the Hawaiian Goose or Nēnē which is a species of goose endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. It is the official state bird of Hawaii
There are also goats, dozens of them which help keep the brush and grasses down. They are nature’s natural lawnmower. Most of the putting greens are Bermuda grass and balls tend to roll faster towards the ocean.
Cats are king at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, where ferrel kitties roam the sprawling property for treats and to help keep the rodent population at bay. The Mauna Kea was the brainchild of Laurence Rockefeller and was the most expensive hotel ever built in 1966 when it opened. The Kaunaoa beach is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii and in the winter offers exciting opportunities for boogie boarders and surfers.
Lava Lava also has some cottages that can be rented for those who want a spot where you can roll right from the bed to the beach.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Full Tour (2018)
Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, established on August 1, 1916, is an American national park located in the U.S. state of Hawaii on the island of Hawaii. The park encompasses two active volcanoes: Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the world's most massive shield volcano. The park provides scientists with insight into the birth and development of the Hawaiian Islands, and ongoing studies into the processes of volcanism. For visitors, the park offers dramatic volcanic landscapes, as well as glimpses of rare flora and fauna.
In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was designated as an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987. In 2012, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park was depicted on the 14th quarter of the America the Beautiful Quarters series.
On May 10, 2018 the park was closed to the public in the Kīlauea volcano summit area, including the visitor center and park headquarters, due to explosions and toxic ash clouds from Halemaʻumaʻu crater, as well as earthquakes and road damage. However, portions of the park, including the visitor center, reopened to the public on September 22, 2018.
Eruptive activity, ground collapses and explosions in the park ceased in early August. As of late September, the lull in eruptive activity at Kīlauea Volcano continues. At the summit, seismicity and deformation are negligible. Sulfur dioxide emission rates at both the summit and the Lower East Rift Zone are drastically reduced; the combined rate is lower than at any time since late 2007. Earthquake and deformation data show no net accumulation, withdrawal, or significant movement of subsurface magma or pressurization as would be expected if the system was building toward a resumption of activity.

****Pu'uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Hawaii****
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located on the west coast of the island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.

****South Point Cliff Dive****
South Point Landing, Hawai’i, is famous for a few different geographical landmarks. It is, as the name implies, the southernmost point of Big Island, Hawai’i. This also makes it the southernmost point of the United States, and visitors can treat themselves to a selfie with a sign saying so while there. It’s a gorgeous spot for cliff diving, and right next to one of the world’s only green sand beaches.
You can easily make a day of visiting South Point by starting at the cliff jump, going to the Southernmost Point sign, and then hiking to the Green Sand Beach!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Lua Manu (2018)
