Alpine Tunnel Pitkin Colorado
Music by The Alpine tunnel was a part of the narrow gauge rail system between Denver and Gunnison Colorado. Construction on the tunnel began in 1880 and started service in 1882. The tunnel was then abandoned in 1910 due to tunnel cave-ins. This was the first tunnel to be constructed through the Continental Divide. The tunnel sits at an elevation of 11,523 feet and has a length of 772 feet. At one time this was the highest tunnel n the world.

Hanging Lake Tunnel, I-70, Glenwood Canyon, Colorado - 5 months before the huge rock slide
I regularly travel this route through Glenwood Canyon for business purposes and climbing trips. This particular video was taken in September, 2009 when I was driving westbound toward Grand Junction, Colorado. Five and and a half months later, at 12:09 am Monday morning (March 8, 2010) a rock slide punched large holes in the highway near mile marker 125 (approximately minute 3:05 in this video) on the west side of the tunnels. The rock slide occurred just after midnight, two hours after I had just passed through on yet another business trip, with a 66 ton boulder doing most of the damage. The highway, in both directions, was closed for almost four full days, opening up to single lanes in each direction on Thursday afternoon, March 14th. I drove through it a night later and took a video of the roadwork that I've posted on YouTube as well. Unfortunately you can't see much of the damage but internet archives should help give you a better idea of how badly a 66 ton boulder can damage a highway!
Anyway, Glenwood Canyon is an extremely beautiful place with a very interesting section of Interstate 70 running through it. The highway, and these tunnels, created a lot of controversy during their development due to the huge environmental impact. Nevertheless, the project went through and most of us use this route traveling between Grand Junction and the Denver area (they say there's an average of 25,000 vehicles going through these tunnels each day with I-70 itself, of course, get much heavier use the closer you get to Denver).
I, myself, have driven the route many dozens of times for both business and pleasure...

Superstition Apiary
Mead is made from honey, and our first commercial apiary will teach us so much about about what makes mead so amazing. We also plan to begin harvesting Estate honey next year, to make some interesting mead showcasing the micro-terroir around our meadery.
Mead is big business in Michigan
Mead, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey and water, is growing in popularity in Michigan. There are about two dozen meaderies in Michigan with more on the way. Michigan is one of the top three states for mead production.
New Year Mead
One of my side projects.
I only use ingredients that appeal to me. 1 orange and 25 raisins. This batch might be ready for New Years. If not it only gets better with time. The yeast used will result in 14% ABV.
Mead, that drink of viking saga and medieval verse, is making a comeback. But this ain't your ancestors' honey wine.
It's not just for the Renaissance fair anymore, says Becky Starr, co-owner of Starrlight Mead, which recently opened in an old woven label mill in this little North Carolina town.
In fact, this most ancient of alcoholic libations hasn't been this hot since Beowulf slew Grendel's dam and Geoffrey Chaucer fell in with the Canterbury pilgrims at the Tabard.
In the past decade, the number of meaderies in the United States has tripled to around 150, says Vicky Rowe, owner of Gotmead.com, which describes itself as the Internet's premier resource for everything to do with mead.
I literally get new notifications of meaderies at least every couple of weeks, says Rowe, who runs the website from her home in the woods north of Raleigh. So they're just popping up all over. And a lot of those are wineries that have decided to add mead to their mainstream product lines, which is just incredible.
Traditional mead is made with three ingredients - honey, water and yeast. The biggest hurdle has been overcoming that centuries-old misconception that something made from honey HAS to be sweet.
But, as Rowe is quick to point out, grapes can be pretty sweet, too.
And just like wine, mead can be as dry as a bone or it can be so sweet it makes your fillings hurt, she says. And it depends on how it's made.
By ALLEN G. BREED
Mead also called honey wine, is an alcoholic beverage that is produced by fermenting a solution of honey and water. It may also be produced by fermenting a solution of water and honey with grain mash, which is strained after fermentation. Depending on local traditions and specific recipes, it may be flavored with spices, fruit, or hops (which produce a bitter, beer-like flavor). The alcoholic content of mead may range from about 8% ABV[5] to 18%. It may be still, carbonated or naturally sparkling, and it may be dry, semi-sweet or sweet.

Schramm's Mead - Blackberry 375 mL - 10/6/16
The steps involved in bottling our mead on our GAI bottling line and Enos labeler:
1.) Clean, rinsed bottles are inserted into the line
2.) The air is vacuumed out and replaced with nitrogen
3.) The nitrogen is vacuumed out and replaced with mead
4.) The fill height is adjusted and a bit more nitrogen is injected to the headspace
5.) A vacuum is pulled once more, then the cork is compressed and inserted under vacuum.
6.) The bottles travel to the labeler unit, where the polylam capsules are dispensed one at a time, pressed onto the bottle, and spun down smoothly.
7.) The bottle receives a front and back label.
8.) The bottles are boxed, dated, and stored for a few days (while the natural corks expand fully) - then they are ready to be sold.
On October 6th, 2016 - Schramm's Mead bottled 222 cases (12 bottles each, 375 mL) of our 14% 'Blackberry' mead, a highly sought after mead made from orange blossom honey and two varietals of blackberries from the Pacific Northwestern United States, marion berry and evergreen. This was the third run on our new bottling line from Prospero Equipment Co.
