CLEANEST VILLAGE IN ASIA | MAWLYNNONG | MEGHALAYA EP - 8
Mawlynnong was also one of the reasons I wanted to visit Meghalaya since a very long time as it is one of the most popular attraction tagged as the cleanest village in whole of Asia. However, after spending a few days in Meghalaya and talking to the fellow travellers I was convinced it was over hyped and I decided to skip it. This decision didn't make me feel good at all and I learned it was clearly due to the fear of missing out. So I decided to quickly check the village out and rented a scooty to cover Mawlynnong. Renting a bike or a scooty in Shillong is quite expensive as compared to rest of the places in India. I found 4 bike rentals online and the first 3 shops quoted a standard price i.e Rs 1000 for activa and Rs 1500 for a bullet. The last rental shop quoted Rs 700 for activa and Rs 1300 for the bullet. Since I had no one to split the cost with, I decided to rent the activa for Rs 700. The scooty was in a very poor condition with only 30 percent of the breaks working. I returned in the evening and found a group of local college students renting scooties for Rs 500. It seems they do not negotiate with tourists and strictly charge the them Rs 700 but I was lucky enough to get the scooty for Rs 500 (Plus Rs 300 fuel).

Pynter Village: This is about 1 hour drive from Mawlynnong, we went to this village to see and enjoy local music. We were told that there are many musicians in this village who travel to different places to perform.
Incidentally, when we reached there we were told that no one is present there, so we were left with no choice but to leave back, wish we could plan in advance and may be link up with someone.

Mawlynnong is a beautiful village just 90 km away from Shillong. The village is termed as God’s own garden because of its scenic beauty and cleanliness.
And Dawki is a town in the west Jayanti hill district of Meghalaya which is situated at the border of India and Bangladesh. The most famous site of this place is the suspension bridge over the river Umngot.
Here is a one day tour of Mawlynnong and Dawki from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya.
The best time to visit these places is just after Monsoon so that you can enjoy the fresh green hills and gushing waterfalls of the surrounding area.
It is better to book a taxi or private car for this tour from Shillong. The fare will be within Rs3000.

In this video I travel from Shillong to Dawki which is known for the crystal clear river ( which is incredibly beautiful ) and also is India's border with Bangladesh .
I also visited Rewai village known for the living root bridge in Meghalaya and Mawlynnong village which is the cleanest village in Asia.

In March of 2019, I spent two weeks in northeast India to explore the states of Assam and Meghalaya. The look and feel of northeast India is unlike the other parts of the country I visited in 2018. I couldn’t wait to take a deep dive into the region’s food, culture, and history. Come along with me and let’s explore northeast India together!

After arriving in Shillong (the capital of Meghalaya) that morning, I met up with my friend Paul, a local who is also a part of the Khasi tribe of northeast India. He took me to Bara Bazaar in Iewduh Market, where we had an authentic Khasi breakfast. I was so hungry and couldn’t wait to eat!
Almost immediately after arriving at the market, we came across a woman selling a fried, doughy Khasi dish and tea. The tea was minty and reminded me of tea I’d had in Morocco. The dish reminded me of an elephant ear that you can get at fairs across America. It contained jaggery and was a great way to start the morning.
We also saw vendors selling loofahs. There are lots of food stalls in the market, which is divided into smaller markets that specialize in vegetables, meats, fish, and more. This is the oldest market in northeast India, and you can certainly feel it! The people moving around me looked more had a lot of southeast Asian features because they’re descended from the Ahoms, who came from what is now Thailand.
There were also people carrying the carcasses of slaughtered cows and pigs on their shoulders! It was an incredible sight to see!
We made our way through the market, taking in all the sights and smells as we went. We picked up a few foods and then moved on to the dry fish market. There were 20 different varieties of dried fish there, including the kind that’s used to make fish chutney. I could smell the salt in the air!
Our first stop for breakfast was Nat Khasi Restaurant, which is next to the fruit market. There are no tables, so you just sit down and eat. I ordered pork liver, pork intestines, rice mixed with pork, regular pork, and pork with onion and ginger.
The rice was very flavorful and reminded me of a non-veg biryani. The pork was absolutely delicious and not spicy at all. I also had a Russian salad with pork, which was also so good! Then I went with the liver, which was tasty and chewy. The pork intestine sausage was also wonderful. Some of the pork had bones in it, so I had to be careful. Then Paul had me try a hot chili and a fermented soybean chutney.
Then we visited the kitchen to see the food being made. There were large pots everywhere!
Then I tried a traditional fruit called sohshang, which can be sweet or sour and is rich in vitamin C. It had the consistency of a tomato and had a big seed in the center but was sour. I liked it, though!
Next, we headed to the beef market. It was very traditional and rustic and felt like I had taken a trip back in time. There was beef as far as the eye could see: pieces laid out on tables and even more cow parts like tongue and other cuts of meat hanging from the booths. I watched a guy butcher a carcass right in front of me. It was a real spectacle!
It was similar in the pork market. This is so unique to this part of India. It’s one of the rawest experiences I’ve ever had in my travels! Then we headed to the fish market, where they sold lots of local fish. Everything there is incredibly fresh.
Then we went to the chicken and duck market. There were so many chickens everywhere and there were even pigeons! I then learned that Iewduh Market is run by a king and every vendor pays taxes to him.
From there, we headed to a tiny café to eat the snacks we bought earlier. We got some red tea there, and then dug into a rice cake. It had coconut on it and was very dry. Then was another rice cake with jaggery. It was great with the minty tea! There was also a dense snack made of super sticky rice. It was a little too sticky for me!

The travel magazine Discover India declared the village as the cleanest in Asia in 2003, and the cleanest in India in 2005
The cleanest village in India, Mawlynnong Village is also known as God’s Own Garden and for all the right reasons. In 2003, Mawlynnong was awarded the title of the cleanest Village in Asia by Discover India.
The village known for its cleanliness is located around 90 kms from Shillong and is a community based eco-tourism initiative. The community has made collective effort to maintain the ambience of a clean village. The village offers picturesque natural beauty, a trek to the living root bridge at a neighbouring village Riwai. The village also offers a sight of natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock. The adage Neighbours envy, owners pride' is apt for Mawlynnong as it has earned the distinction of being one of the cleanest villages in Asia, a fact that every Mawlynnong villager is proud of and other villagers are envy of.
The village is quite pretty, especially in the monsoons when there is lush greenery all around, with waterfalls paving the way to small streams and abundance of flowering orchids dangling from the trees and hedges add to the beauty of the village.
The onus to keep the village clean lies with every person residing in the village. Local cleaning the roads, picking up leaves and throwing garbage in the bin is a very common sight. Bamboo garbage bins adorn every nook and corner of the village highlight the consciousness of cleanliness among the villagers. Cleanliness is an age old tradition and a way of life for all villagers. The village has won accolade for being the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 as well as the Cleanest Village in India in 2005. The village also offers breathtaking view of Bangladesh plains as it is located on the Indo-Bangla border.

বিস্তারিত: প্রথমে বলে রাখি কেউ দাজিলিং কে শিলং এর সাথে তুলনা করবেন না। শিলং এ দার্জিলিং এর সব পাবেন বোনাস হিসেবে অগনিত ঝরণা। শিলং এর রাস্তার সৌন্দর্য ভাষায় প্রকাশ করা যাবেনা। চলুন এখন আসল কথায় আসি ১৫% ভ্যাট মোটেও নয় বেশি।
প্রথমে মতিঝিল সোনালি ব্যাংক থেকে ৫০০ টাকা দিয়ে
ভ্রমন ট্যাক্স দিয়ে মহাখালি/ফকিরাপুল থেকে ঢাকা টু সিলেট এর টিকেট কাটবেন। এ রুট এর সবচেয়ে ভালো নন এসি বাস এনা ও ইউনিক। ভাড়া পড়বে ৪৭০ টাকা। চেষ্টা করবেন শেষের বাসটা ধরার জন্য। রাতে বাসা থেকে বার হলে যাত্রা বিরতি তে খাওয়া লাগবেনা। মাএ ৫ ঘন্টার ধাক্কা। ভোরে নেমে ঝটপট পরটা ডিম দিয়ে ৫০ টাকার মধ্যে নাসতা সেরে নেন। তারপর সিলেট থেকে ঝাফলং এর বাস এ উঠে পরবেন। ভাড়া পড়বে ৬৫ টাকা।
বলে রাখা ভালো সবচেয়ে সুবিধা ডলার নিয়ে গেলে। আর ভ্রমন ট্যাক্স না দিয়ে গেলে আপনাকে গুনতে হবে ১০০০ টাকা। তামাবিল নেমে ঝামেলা না করতে চাইলে ১০০ টাকা দিয়ে মাএ ১৫ মিনিটে ঢুকে পডুন ডাউকি। এখান থেকে শিলং জন প্রতি ৩০০ রুপি তে পৌছাতে পারবেন শিলং। আবার যদি সোনাংপেডেং (ঝাফলং এর বিপরিত অংশ) ও কারংগছিরি ঝরণা ও আরো অনেক ছোট বড় ঝরণা দেখে যেতে চান তাহলে লাগবে জন প্রতি ৮০০ রুপি। শিলং শহরে পৌছে দুপুরের খাবার খেয়ে নেন। এখানে খাবারের অনেক দাম। পুলিশ বাজারে হোটেল সাবেরা তে অন্যান্য হোটেল এর চেয়ে কমে খেতে পারবেন। তাও মোটামুটি জন প্রতি ১৫০ রুপি লেগে যাবে ।এখন পুলিশ বাজার এর ভিতরের দিকে হোটেল বা লজ নেবেন কারণ রোডের ওপরের হোটেল ভাড়া অনেক। ৪ জনের ৩ দিনের জন্য ৬০০০ রুপিতে (জন প্রতি ১৫০০) দিয়ে মোটামুটি মানের হোটেল পেয়ে যাবেন। এ দিন রাতে পরের দিন সিটি টুর এর জন্য গাড়ি নিয়ে রাখবেন। গাড়ি ভাড়া পড়বে ১৫০০ রুপি(জন প্রতি ৩৭৫ রুপি) । হোটেল সাবেরা তে রাতের খাবার খেয়ে তাড়াতাড়ি ঘুমাতে চলে যান। মনে রাখবেন শিলং এ রাত ৭টার পরে বেশীরভাগ দোকানপাট বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

That being said, this is my first attempt at making such a diary. We had a three-day weekend at the end of January, and a spontaneous trip was planned to Shillong, Mawlynnong and Dawki. The first two days were not that much fun, but we ended up having one of the best nights of our lives on the last day. I absolutely loved the process of making this video—although there were a couple of hiccups, including almost losing the entire edit once—at the end of it I felt like I got exactly what I wanted. I love what I do, and I only wish I could do this full-time.

Shnongpdeng. You guys should really check out this place, if you ever plan on visiting Dawki. It’s a bit upriver and most people don’t end up going there because of that. But it’s so much better than the camping spots your driver will try to get you to pay for—they’ve got far more activities and better tents. Google Maps link -

Bonus Story. A day before upload my entire library decided to go corrupt on me. The edit would no longer show up and Final Cut just kept crashing. I spent nearly a whole day trying to fix just that. In the end, I fixed the situation by moving the edit from my Mac to a MacBook Pro, on which I had edited the same video before, and over writing those project files. I learned a lot about Final Cut and about Mac and the way files are handled.
