The Mekong Delta
From the heights of the Tibetan Plateau, the mighty Mekong flows through six countries, giving life and a home to millions of people. For this, it was once named “Mother of all rivers”. The Mekong is one of the most speciose rivers of the world, with approximately 1,300 varieties of fish and numerous kinds of reptiles and birds.
After a journey of 4,500 kilometres (3,000 miles) it reaches the South China Sea. Nine estuaries carry enormous amounts of silt to form one of the greatest (50,000 km2) ever growing deltas in the world. Cuu Long (nine dragons) is the Vietnamese name for the nine main estuaries. More than 13 million people live by the timeless rhythm of the river in small fishing villages and boats. There are also many Khmer and Cham who live in the Mekong delta region.
The cultivation of the Mekong delta
The beginning of cultivation of the Mekong delta can be dated back to 1750 when Vietnamese monarchs started to built canals and drain swamps to gain more land for cultivation. But the main part of the development was done by the French at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuaries.
Thousands of waterways form a labyrinth of major currents and secluded canals lined with lush vegetation, mangrove swamps and verdant rice fields. Due to the fertile soil and the production of 16 million tonnes of rice per year (harvested in three crops) the Mekong delta is also called “rice bowl” of Vietnam.
The Mekong delta is an exotic paradise for travellers from all over the world: good climate, an abundance of tropical fruit, sugar cane, coconuts and colourful flowers, a relaxed atmosphere and the generous mentality of the people. Lots of the activities in the area take place on the vast waterways. Most houses have access to the river, not all of them to roads.

The Mekong Delta is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southeastern Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi).The size of the area covered by water depends on the season.
The Mekong Delta has recently been dubbed as a ‘biological treasure trove’. Over 10,000 new species have been discovered in previously unexplored areas of Mekong Delta, including a species of rat thought to be extinct.
The Mekong Delta is the bottom half of Vietnam's two rice baskets (the other being the Red River Delta in the North). This vast delta is formed by the deposition of the multiple tentacles and tributaries of the mighty Mekong River which has its origin in the Tibetan highland plateau 2,800 miles away. From its source, the river makes its way through China, Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Cambodia and South Vietnam before flowing out into the South China Sea. The Mekong's Vietnamese name, Cuu Long, means Nine Dragons for the nine mouths that terminate the flow of this great river as it is absorbed by the sea.
The delta, which yields enough rice to feed the country with a sizable surplus, was formed by sediment deposited by the Mekong. The process continues today, with silt deposits extending the shoreline by as much as 80m per year. The river is so large that it has two daily tides. Lush with rice paddies and fish farms, this delta plain also nourishes the cultivation of sugarcane, fruit, coconut and shrimp. Although the area is primarily rural, it is one of the most densely populated regions in Vietnam and nearly every hectare is intensively farmed.
The Mekong Delta, often referred to as Vietnam’s rice basket, is the biggest rice-growing region in the country, the rich alluvial soils producing three harvests a year. Despite being a predominantly rural region, the Mekong Delta is one of the most densely populated areas in Vietnam and most of the land is under cultivation. Other delta products include coconut, sugar cane, fruit and fish.
The main towns of the delta are My Tho, Vinh Long, Can Tho and Chau Doc. Driving south from Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho is the first major Mekong Delta town you come to. Its proximity to Ho Chi Minh City has made My Tho the most popular destination for day-trippers to the delta looking for a taste of authentic delta life. Here visitors can take a sampan along the waterways, visit tropical fruit orchards and try the local delicacy, Elephant’s Ear Fish.
The other popular destination for day-trippers from Ho Chi Minh City is Vinh Long, another 65km deeper into the delta. It is the islands in the Mekong River rather than the town itself that is the highlight of a trip to Vinh Long. Most of the islands are given over to fruit orchards and the narrow canals are often straddled by flimsy-looking wooden bridges made from the trunks of coconut palms or bamboo and known as monkey bridges. An early morning visit to nearby Cai Be Floating Market offers great photographic opportunities as all manner of produce is traded from boats. To make shopping easier the boats suspend a sample of what they sell from the top of a long pole. On the way back to Vinh Long it is possible to stop off to visit small riverside workshops including blacksmiths, rice huskers, thatchers and coffin makers!
The uniquely southern charm with its welcoming introduction to life along the river is the real draw, and visitors can explore quaint riverside towns, sample fruits bartered in the colourful floating markets or dine on home-cooked delicacies before overnighting as a homestay guest. Other highlights include visits to local orchards, flower markets and fish farms. There are also bird sanctuaries, rustic beach getaways like Hon Chong and impressive Khmer pagodas in the regions around Soc Trang and Tra Vinh.
Just over 30km and a ferry ride away from Vinh Long is Can Tho, the bustling commercial centre of the Mekong Delta. Can Tho is one of the more attractive delta towns but as in the rest of the Mekong Delta the best sights are on the water. The delta’s biggest floating market, Cai Rang Floating Market, is 6km from Can Tho and well worth an early morning visit. For a memorable boat trip the Victoria Can Tho Hotel operates sunrise and sunset cruises on the Lady Hau, a renovated traditional rice barge. A spectacular sight outside of town is the stork garden at Thot Not where hundreds of egrets, herons and cormorants gather in the treetops to roost late in the afternoon.

Mekong Delta, Vietnam
Video with images of the Mekong delta in south Vietnam. The delta of the Mekong river is the last part of the country colonized by the Vietnamese. In the seventeenth century they started to develop the area and to construct canals. The delta is very fertile because of the silt from the mountains which floats down the Mekong river and alluviates in the delta at high tide. In the delta the river splits into nine arms all flowing down to the South chinese Sea. Hence the nickname river of the nine dragons. Because of the fertile silt floating down the Mekong river the delta has become the main rice area of the country. The landscape is plain and the agricultural fields are just few metres above sea level. The many canals in the delta are used for drainage and irrigation. They connect the river arms into a network of waterways. Boats are the main means of traffic and transport. The difference between low and high tide is much less compared to the delta of the Red river and for this reason there are no high dikes. There are no attractions in the Mekong delta. However it offers the opportunity to observate the ordinary life of local people at close range for example in the town of Vinh Long.
The port of Vinh Long is situated near the Tien Giang river. A boat trip leads to large canals with many motor boats as well as rowing boats. The boat passes smaller canals with palm trees near the river side growing into the water. On the river banks are small settlements with houses and fields separated by ditches. The banks are interconnected by means of steep monkey bridges staggering constructions of thin tree trunks with just one rail only fit for light weight visitors. The boat trip leads to the floating market of Cai Be where many boats loaded with local merchandise float on the water near the town quay. The market shows how fruits, fish, chickens and especially rice are sold and shipped .

Mekong Delta’s splendors now a relic of the past
In 1954, when the French withdrew from Hanoi and peace reigned once more in our capital, I was only 8 years old. Where I am from, students could only study up to 3rd grade. Our teacher, originally from the south, was a child of the Mekong Delta.
He often told us stories about his hometown, about how it needed no dam to tame the Mekong River unlike our Red River since the Mekong people had learned to live with the behemoth.
Every few months, when the water rose, people would get into their boats and go wherever the river flowed.
The life-giving floods would provide their land with silt and fish, so the people could plant their crops without using fertilizers or go fishing with little effort.
Life was good in the delta back then. But we never understood that as children since we never saw anything like that where we lived.
As I grew up I learned about Dat rung phuong Nam (The southern land) by Doan Gioi, a fictional novel about the adventures of a little boy named An, who lost his family when the French invaded his village.
The beauty of the Mekong Delta depicted in the novel was exactly like how our teacher used to describe it, only elevated even further by Gioi’s brilliant writing.
In it, people and the nature around them were two sides of the same coin: the people embraced nature and in return nature provided them with what they needed to thrive.
I’ve always dreamt of going to a place like that.
In 1977, a year and a half after the North and South of Vietnam were unified, I was in charge of collecting documents, maps and other things left behind by the former administration.
The work was mostly in Da Lat and Saigon, but I insisted on taking a few days off to venture to the south-western region to see with my own eyes what had become to the beloved plains of my childhood fantasies.
Back then traveling wasn’t very easy since fuel was scarce. But it didn’t matter to me; I traversed cities and provinces - My Tho to Can Tho to the U Minh forest in Ca Mau, one of the main settings for Dat rung phuong Nam - before returning.
As I walked through verdant, lush woodlands and spoke with locals, I realized that people and nature were still able to live in harmony there.
But would that last?
As time went by the government began to formulate new policies for the Mekong Delta to develop the region. It involved knocking down dams, building dams, constructing new power plants, attracting investment … you name it.
It has changed the region, but not in a good way.
There are people who want to do aquaculture but can’t because the government wants them to grow crops.
There are people who want to move to higher ground to avoid flooding, but that means leaving their paddy fields behind.
People have grown too accustomed to living side by side with nature that they cannot adapt to all the innovations that modern life brings.
Worse, nature itself is at stake. The push for aquaculture has seen people destroy protective coastal forests to make room for new ponds, groundwater is dwindling due to overexploitation, erosion is becoming increasingly common in the region…
Provinces in the southwestern plains are looking for a way out or at least a way to distract themselves from this precarious situation.
Tien Giang and Long An have chosen industrialization like their eastern counterparts.
Kien Giang has decided to push forward with tourism while...

Campbell Sediment Cap Project Overview
In a joint effort to improve the water quality and environment in San Diego Bay, the Port of San Diego, the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, and members of the San Diego Bay Council worked together to manage the contaminated sediments just offshore of the former Campbell Shipyard site. The large amount of accumulated contamination was the result of decades of industrial waste disposal. Together, the group created a uniquely engineered cap that not only isolates the contaminated sediment at the site, but has improved water quality and has a thriving eelgrass community living on the site.

Farming Vietnamese Way
In 1990, one in three Vietnamese people didn't have enough to eat. Today, that number is down by more than 80 percent. People are eating more, and have a diverse range of foods for better nutrition. How did Viet Nam find a food system that works? Some of the credit goes to V-A-C (vee-ay-see) farming, promoted by a government NGO called VACVINA. (vackveena).
SOUNDBITE (Vietnamese) Nguyen Ngoc Triu, President, VACVINA:
V-A-C in Vietnamese is vuon/ao/chuong, which means garden/pond/livestock pen. Vietnamese families, especially in the delta areas, normally have a pond in front or in the back of their house. They also have gardens and pigpens. This is an integrated system.
By the 1990s, after decades of central planning, many families began leasing land from the government. They could decide what to grow and sell the surplus at market. Family farms became family businesses.
V-A-C links fish farming, raising livestock and growing fruit and vegetables all year round. Waste products from one part of the system are recycled and used by other parts of the system. Even the nutrient-rich silt from the bottom of the pond is recycled to fertilize the garden and create new land for planting.
Usually pigs are the main livestock. They provide income, but they also power the gas cooker in the family's kitchen.
SOUNDBITE (Vietnamese) Dung Nguyen Ngoc, Farmer:
For example, with a pigpen, we don't have to buy gas for cooking. The manure is used for fish production. The biogas system helps protect the environment. We also use manure for the garden. The waste water of biogas is very good for irrigating crops. This type of irrigation water is better than nitrate.
Dung and his family make between 5 and 7 thousand dollars a year from all their farm activities. Everything they eat is produced here.
Long gone are the days when rice was scarce.
