The ‘Hottest’ Wine Trail in Texas is Off Hwy 290!
Goodtaste.tv
There’s no way around it: the way we taste our Texas wines has changed. We’re now America’s No. 5 wine-producing state! If you haven’t heard the buzz on the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 as of late, it’s time to hit the trail. This serene stretch of road along US Highway 290 near Fredericksburg, Texas is being compared to the Napa of 30 years ago–a higher level of development, growth and quality. Up for an adventure (and some best wine in the state)? This is where it’s happening! The thirteen Texas wineries found along this route specialize in home-grown hospitality, with newcomers to the neighborhood like Messina Hof adding to 290’s already esteemed reputation with 3 Top of Class Winners at the 2014 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, however. The first stop on our Goodtaste tour of 290 landed us at 4.0 Cellars.
4.0’s impressive facility is a good starting point. They’re tasting room is a lively spot with plenty of foot traffic. Here you’ll taste award-winning Texas wines from three different producers: Brennan Vineyards, Lost Oak Winery, and McPherson Cellars. Talk about saving some time on travel (and gas!). They also do a fun ‘Texas Cheese & Wine Experience’ – Texas cheeses from Veldhuizen Cheese Company paired with five wines selected from 4.0 Cellars.
Up the road, maybe 200 yards, is the aforementioned Messina Hof Winery & Resort. One of the pioneers of Texas wines, standouts include their Cabernet Franc Private Reserve as well as their crisp, clear and pleasantly sweet Angel Riesling.
Just across the highway – and a place that’s always intrigued me – is Dan Gatlin’s Inwood Estates Vineyard. Dan is a bit of a renegade and works extremely hard to elevate the status of Texas wines. A MUST, according to Dan, is that a wine needs to say ‘Texas’ on the font label or it is not a true Texas wine. Inwood is known for its Tempranillo, but also doing some really great work with Cabernet — which has immense potential largely untapped in Texas.
We made fast friends with Inwood’s on-site bistro. Be sure to stick around for something to munch on…
TEXAS RV ROAD TRIP - Hill Country - TRIPPED RV EP13
Texas RV Road Trip: Hill Country
Now that we’ve finally left the craziness of Austin behind (after spending a month there) it’s time to slow down things a bit in nearby Hill Country.
KRAUSE SPRINGS
Our first stop for this road trip is Krause Springs. Krause Springs is located in Springwood about 45 minutes to the North West of Austin.
As is always the case, Finney had the destination planned and I had no idea where I was driving to. Anytime I hear a natural sounding name like “springs” I start thinking state park. Turns out Krause Springs is privately owned swimming and camping spot that specializes in having the most signs of any place I’ve ever visited.
INKS LAKE STATE PARK
Inks Lake State Park was close by and also turned out to be a great place to spend a few days. The main draw to this State Park was a cool little hiking loop as well as the Devils Watering Hole.
The Devils Waterhole is a well known cliff jumping spot but while we were visiting, there was no one else even swimming, let alone jumping. That left us searching for pictures of exactly where people were cliff jumping on google images. To say it felt sketchy to jump into murky water off a cliff based on a picture you had seen online was an understatement. After my first jump i definitely touched a rock underwater with my foot- that meant it was one and done for me. (I prefer jumping off cliffs when I KNOW that I’m not going to smash into the bottom.)
MESSINA HOF
The last stop on our little road trip was spending the night at Messina Hof winery in Bryan Texas. Messina Hof is the second Harvest Hosts we’ve stayed with. I can’t say enough good things about the concept of doing a wine tasting, being able to purchase a bottle, and then having your house within walking distance.
It turned out to be quite the profound day as I learned I enjoy a sparkling moscato when it's hot out. I can admit it.

Top Homegrown Picks for Texas Wine Month
Goodtaste.tv
Did you know that Texas is the 5th largest wine producer in the entire country? We mean business down here! All month long celebrate (and support) local wineries that are producing some highly regarded products. The Steinheimer's Lounge at the Westin La Cantera Hill Country Resort is THE perfect place to sample the best that the Lone Star State has to offer. Daily, hour-long wine tastings with knowledgeable sommelier Steven Krueger are a real treat. Steven and I spoke in length about some of his current fancies from Texas that are really taking off:
Lone Oak Winery's Blanc du Bois is a hybrid grape planted in Texas meant to replace your Pinot Grigios or Sauvignon Blancs. It's dry, light in style with a clean taste. We also tried the Viognier from Brennan Vineyards. It's a beautiful white wine. Originally from the southern region of France, the warm temperatures and limestone found in the bedrock here in Texas make it right at home!
On the red side, the Perissos Vineyard makes a lovely Syrah Blend that comes from 100% estate grown fruit. Red Caboose Winery has a Tempranillo that's a rarity to find outside of the winery. I'm big on Spanish wines and those influenced by such -- period!
Wine Is Serious Business 149: Trying Some Wine From Texas
Dan's girlfriend Joy connected us with a few bottles of wine from Texas. We've heard a bit about the wineries there, but this is the first time we've tried any. All three are very reasonably priced. Joy joins us on the show to taste the 2011 Messina Hof Pinot Grigio, The 2010 Becker Vineyards Iconoclast Cabernet Sauvignon, and the 2009 Becker Vineyards Reserve Merlot. Outside of Oregon, Washington, California, and Virginia, in what state would or do you like to taste wine? If you've ever been to Texas, how was your trip?
Fall Creek Winery - TX
Fall Creek Wines --the only winery in TX to receive a 'Best Buy' in the Wine Spectator. WS recognized their Sauvignon Blanc.
Wimberley Valley Winery -- Driftwood, Texas
The winery was started back in 1983. Many Texas wine lovers probably remember tasting their wines in historic Old Town Spring, Texas. Now, thanks to more modern Texas wine laws and few ordinance changes for the county and precinct, they now have a tasting room where it all began. Sweet and fruit wine lovers can definitely find something they like here. Some of the fruit wines are seasonal, so keep a wine nose out for them. The Christmas Cuvee is something you'll surely want to have with family and friends for the holidays. The new tasting room facility has an excellent décor that'll make you feel welcomed with lots of comfortable chairs for lounging and sharing your thoughts over a few glasses. Outside, you might notice some miniature horses grazing the lands. That's just part of the homey and country feel of the place. The pace of things out here in the country is slower, so relax and stop to smell the wine and roses.
