Hog Island for Sale!
Hog Island (Belle Island) Have your own kingdom on a private island! A set of unique properties are now on the market for someone who really wants to get away from it all. Living and working in densely populated cities means that most of us, sooner or later, crave a life away from noise and people. This group of properties being offered for the first time ever will provide exactly that. Hike, hunt, fish and boat in total seclusion an hour from Disney. Submerge yourself in nature on your own 237 acres of pristine Florida wild country. Venture into the forest and see deer, turkeys, bald eagles, bobcats and even a resident bear. Take your boat out for the day on the St. Johns River, Lake George, or the beautiful springs that are an easy distance away.
Fish in a place so special that people travel hundreds of miles to experience it! Try the excitement of an alligator hunt with one of the experienced guides in George Town. If you want to decompress inside, the island offers 3 totally renovated furnished cottages. They have a total of 8 bedrooms so you can invite your friends and family. Meet your guests on the mainland at your own quaint reception center, which is the oldest existing one room school house in the county (1899) All the locals have fond memories, and stories of their school days in that building and it is a great place to greet your guest, before you take them to your private mainland dock and then on to your private island.
Highlights of the Island are:
Miles of nature trails,
3 cottages ,
A helicopter pad,
Multiple docks (2 are heavy duty),
A wood equipment barn,
3 ponds, bridges, and a gazebo,
A metal equipment storage barn, a large shop and other structures,
All the equipment needed to maintain the Island,
A reverse osmosis treatment plant,
A playground with a playhouse,
All efforts have been made to make the island completely turnkey, unlike most islands; this island has its own connection to mainland power, phones, intranet and wells for water. The island is only accessible by boat, helicopter or float plane.
Also included in the sale are two mainland properties:
An island keeper's residence along with a boat, metal staging barn, and a private heavy duty dock on its own buildable waterfront lot, to access the island.
A lovingly restored one room school house to be used as the Island Reception center,
As is suitable for a hideaway, the island is somewhat remote, but is situated in Florida's best and second largest lake, Lake George, which is also part of the 340 mile long, north flowing St. John's River. The island is nearly equidistant from Jacksonville, Ocala, Orlando, and Daytona with historic St. Augustine being a bit closer. It is bordered on the west side of the lake by the Ocala National Forest and on the east by Georgetown.
Whether this special place is a millionaire's private bolt-hole, a family's compound, a corporate retreat, conservation land, or something else, this is a singular chance to acquire something that is almost impossible to find.
It is a beautiful mostly natural, large private island with its own mainland access and everything is move-in ready right down to the furnishing. The views are absolutely astounding!
Where in the world can you have a large private island (maybe the largest currently available in Florida) with a warm climate, close to a number of cities but out of reach to all of them, with a stable banking and political environment and where you can fish, hunt, crab, farm, build a dream house or just live and enjoy the wildlife in natural splendor and still be about 1 and 1/2 hours from Disney? There is only one place and this is IT!
Cedar Key Florida Travel - YouTube
This place is awesome if you are looking for a quiet, laid back vacation to relax, enjoy nature and just take it easy in the beauty of the Florida Gulf Coast. Fishing, crabbing, kayaking and nature watching are just some of the things to keep your days busy or just read a book, whatever.
Cindy and I loved this little piece of paradise.
Cedar Key is a city in Levy County, Florida, United States. The population was 790 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 958. The Cedar Keys are a cluster of islands near the mainland. Most of the developed area of the city has been on Way Key since the end of the 19th century. The Cedar Keys are named for the Eastern Red Cedar, Juniperus virginiana, once abundant in the area.
While evidence suggests human occupation as far back as 500 BC, the first maps of the area date to 1542, when it was labeled Las Islas Sabines by a Spanish cartographer. An archaeological dig at Shell Mound, 9 miles (14 km) north of Cedar Key, found artifacts dating back to 500 BC in the top 10 feet (3.0 m) of the 28-foot-tall (8.5 m) mound. The only ancient burial found in Cedar Key was a 2,000-year-old skeleton found in 1999.
Arrow heads and spear points dating from the Paleo period (12,000 years old) were collected by Cedar Key historian St. Clair Whitman and are displayed at the Cedar Key Museum State Park.
The Cedar Keys were used by Seminole Indians, by the Spanish as a watering stop for ships returning to Spain from Mexico, and by pirates, such as Jean Lafitte and Captain Kidd.
13 Years Living Off the Land - Man Shares REAL Homestead Experience
Peter from TreeEater Farm & Nursery ( in BC shares the challenges and lessons learned from his experience earning a living off the land for 13 years with his partner Magdalene.
Peter moved to a piece of land in British Columbia's Gulf Islands as an idealistic 22-year old who wanted to save the world and reduce his environmental footprint by growing his own food, building his own shelter, and producing his own fibres for clothes. Magdalene joined him a few years later.
To make this homesteading project financially viable, the couple has had to experiment with different revenue streams, including community supported agriculture (CSA) vegetable box programs, hand forged tools, meat animals, dairy cows, and selling fruit and nut trees, as well as plenty of off-farm work as well.
After a steep and labour-intensive learning curve, Peter has realized that living off the land can be very expensive, that it can be difficult to earn an income from agricultural products — especially if your land isn't situated in an area with a market for your product nearby, and that living off the land requires a lot of infrastructure & maintenance — all of which costs time and money. And they aren't even trying to be off grid.
It was refreshing to get such an honest look behind the scenes of what appears to be a utopian lifestyle: living in a hand built timber frame home with a cozy wood stove, and eating fruit and nuts from your own island orchard's trees, and to know there's quite a big financial and physical struggle to make it all happen.

Hemp Car Developed in Canada
A new car, built largely from hemp, is being billed as the world's most eco-friendly car.
The Kestrel has a top speed of just under 60 miles per hour, and can travel around 100 miles before it needs to be recharged. Up to four people can fit in the eco-friendly automobile, and the body, made from hemp fibers, is highly resistant to impact. After a crash, the panels pop back into shape, reducing damage.
The body of the car was designed by Motive Industries, based in Quebec.
Nathan Armstrong, the president of the company, explained Hemp composite is as strong as the fiberglass in boats, yet incredibly lightweight.
Research into how to build a car from hemp was sponsored by a coalition of businesses and schools of engineering.
In 1941, Henry Ford designed and built a car made entirely from organic materials, including hemp. Tests showed the car bodies were stronger and weighed less than than comparable models made from steel.
Unlike the United States, the government of Canada is actively supporting the growth of the hemp industry in their nation. The plant can be used in more than 50,000 products. Hemp can replace plastic and petroleum in a wide range of uses.
The three-door hatchback weighs just 2,500 pounds. A Ford Fusion, which is about the same size, weighs 1,200 pounds more than the Kestrel. This increases fuel efficiency by 25 to 30 percent over traditional designs.
Unlike metals, hemp does not need high heat or toxic chemicals to process or shape. This provides a great benefit to the environment over older car designs.

Oregon White Truffle Hunting With Jack Czarnecki
To Jack Czarnecki, his lifelong fascination with wild mushrooms can be distilled down to one determinant factor: family genetics. More specifically, his father, Joe Czarnecki, who of European Polish descent, created quite a stir in his day with his cutting-edge restaurant called 'Joe's' in Reading, Pennsylvania. In the 1950's Joe Czarnecki was among the first chef's to use wild mushrooms, drawing culinary notables from afar, including Craig Clayborn, James Beard, and Julia Child who back then wanted to find out about this guy.
As a child Jack Czarnecki would go on mushroom hunts with his father, but it wasn't until he and his wife Heidi, took over Joe's in 1974 that he really got hooked on foraging for wild mushrooms, and putting them on his restaurant menu.
Although the truffle is classified as a mushroom, it is almost wholly distinct from any other mushroom. In 1996 Joe's closed after 80 years of existence, and Jack and Heidi relocated to Oregon, and started The Joe Palmer Restaurant in the small town of Dayton, near Portland. It was here that Jack turned his attention to truffles, in part, because Oregon truffles at the time had been given the wrongful reputation of being somehow inferior to their European counterparts. Early on, Jack found both the Oregon White and Oregon Black Truffle to be quite the opposite, true culinary treasures.
As Jack Czarnecki explains in the video, one of the biggest challenges is learning how to make natural truffle oil; oil that faithfully reflects all the complexities and subtleties of the gasses inside a ripening truffle. Although he has made tremendous strides over the four years he has been producing his different truffle oils, he still feels he has more to learn about making truffle oils.
Jack Czarnecki's deep love of wild mushrooms, his training as a Chef, as a microbiologist, and his natural affinity toward philosophical inquiry— of seeking to grasp the large out of that which may be quite small— continues to fuel his drive to commercially produce a better truffle oil.
As though fulfilling an unwritten destiny, Jack's son Chris now runs The Joel Palmer House restaurant, and his other son Stefan is involved in the restaurant, and helping his dad with their truffle oil business.
In the Czarnecki family, the apple seems to fall not far from the tree.

This Mushroom Starts Killing You Before You Even Realize It | Deep Look

The notorious death cap mushroom causes poisonings and deaths around the world. If you were to eat these unassuming greenish mushrooms by mistake, you wouldn’t know your liver is in trouble until several hours later. The death cap has been spreading across California. Can scientists find a way to stop it?

Find out more on KQED Science:
Where do death cap mushrooms grow?
In California, they grow mainly under coast live oaks. They have also been found under pines, and in Yosemite Valley under black oaks.
Why do death caps grow under trees?
As many fungi do, death cap mushrooms live off of trees, in what’s called a mycorrhizal relationship. They send filaments deep down to the trees’ roots, where they attach to the very thin root tips. The fungi absorb sugars from the trees and give them nutrients in exchange.
Where do California’s death cap mushrooms come from?
Biologist Anne Pringle, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, has done research that shows that death caps likely snuck into California from Europe attached to the roots of imported plants, as early as 1938.
How deadly are death cap mushrooms?
Between 2010 and 2015, five people died in California and 57 became sick after eating the unassuming greenish mushrooms, according to the California Poison Control System. One mushroom cap is enough to kill a human being, and they’re also poisonous to dogs. Death caps are believed to be the number one cause of fatal mushroom poisonings worldwide.
What happens if you eat a death cap mushroom?
A toxin in the mushroom destroys your liver cells. Dr. Kent Olson, co-medical director of the San Francisco Division of the California Poison Control System, said that for the first six to 12 hours after they eat the mushroom, victims of the death cap feel fine. During that time, a toxin in the mushroom is quietly injuring their liver cells. Patients then develop severe abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting. “They can become very rapidly dehydrated from the fluid losses,” said Olson. Dehydration can cause kidney failure, which compounds the damage to the liver. For the most severe cases, the only way to save the patient is a liver transplant.

Man Living in a 10'x10' Tiny House & Homesteading in the City
Rob Greenfield's latest sustainable living project is to live in a DIY 100 ft² tiny house for two years while foraging and growing 100% of his own food in an urban area. You can follow more of Rob's adventures in sustainable living on YouTube and on his website here:
We are thrilled to be featuring Rob on our channel, and we learned so much from him just with this one video collaboration. In addition to living in his tiny home, he's figuring out how to create his own cooking fuel using a biodigester, he's growing his own toilet paper, and he even makes his own sea salt.
He built the tiny house in the backyard of someone who was looking to live more sustainably. In exchange for a place to build the home, he created a rainwater collection system, an extensive garden on the front lawn, a bio digester and composting system, and more.
Obviously, we can't all live like Rob is doing in this video (although it does look like a healthy, simple, and rewarding lifestyle), but we can get inspired to make positive changes in our own lives. Maybe start composting or eating more fresh food, creating less garbage, riding our bikes more, etc. That's what we're inspired to do after working on this video with him :)
We also want to say a huge thank you to Brandon Kari for filming this footage of Rob and his tiny house homestead for us. You can check out Brandon's work on his website here:

In this episode we check out the largest abandoned factory we've ever explored - a massive blast furnace known as HFB and it's associated steelworks. This location has been on our bucket list for years and it was amazing to finally be able to travel to Belgium to see it for ourselves. It's truly one of the most impressive abandoned industrial sites in the world.

Selbyville is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States.
By 1918, Selbyville was the major supplier of strawberries for the entire east coast, an industry that remained strong until the 1930s.
Today, one of its main employers is Mountaire Farms, a poultry company, which runs a processing plant on Hosier Street.
This town is also home of the Mumford Sheet Metal Works, which once held the world record for the largest frying pan in 1950.
Selbyville is also home to Doyle's Restaurant, which has recently been recognized by the State of Delaware as the oldest operating diner in the State, and still has the original 1930's diner attached to the main restaurant that is still available for diners to eat at.

Faceless ignorant criminals spraying chemtrail over Fort Lauderdale, Florida
5:20PM Thursday, October 6, 2011
Saw about 5 chemtrails over South Florida this afternoon, caught this one in real time. Is anyone else tired of these minions poisoning the precious air that we breathe ? if so, I encourage you to send the FOIA below to your City atty, Country atty, State atty and the FAA. Sample FOIA below.
TO: Director of the Domestic Event Network ( 7-AWA-ARC-FOIA@faa.gov )
CC: Office of Public Counsel - State of Florida:: Patricia Ann Christensen
CC: Harry Stewart: - Attorney for City of Fort Lauderdale
CC: G. Fairclough - Attorney for Broward County
RE: Chemtrails: Reporting and inquiry: FOIA demand for information
The Domestic Event Network is defined at 32CFR245.5 (page two)
Greetings,
(a) Today, at approximately 4:45PM, an aircraft flew over the intersection of 595 and I-95, Fort Lauderdale, FL at approximately 35,000 feet, in northwest direction.
It sprayed chemicals in the air which lasted for several hours. These are commonly referred to as chemtrails.
Upon information and belief, this activity violates protocols of the Geneva Convention which prohibit the use of chemical or biological weapons on the general public.
As government entities, agencies or agents, you have a duty to investigate, once informed of the nefarious activity.
Pursuant to Florida Public Records Law statute 119.00, and Federal FOIA law (5 U.S.C. § 552, as amended by Public Law No. 104-231, 110 Stat. 3048);
This FOIA request pertains to any documents in your possession or under your control concerning aircraft spraying above Fort Lauderale and Broward County, Florida, USA.
The following information, documents or data are requested:
1) The flight plan and complete registration data for the aircraft specified in paragraph (a). This request includes, but is not limited to, providing the specific identity of planes used (including their N-number registration number), flight plans, duration of flights, and any other documents pertaining to their spraying activities.
2) Who or what agency is in charge of protecting residents of the United States of America from the spraying of any chemicals by aircraft ?
Please provide their full name, address, phone numbers, fax number and email contact address.
3) If these airplanes are black ops, is the agency (asked for in #2) even going to have or be aware of the flight plan (if one was filed ?).
4) Are you aware of any instances where some statute or code mentions that chemical spraying is legal under some circumstance ?
Failure to respond or comply to this inquiry will indicate that you are complicit in a coverup of this patently unlawful chemical spraying and will accordingly put you and your staff at risk of a grand jury investigation. De-jure government entities exist for one reason only, to protect their Citizens. Failure to investigate and respond is res-ipsa proof that you and the government you work for, are, now de-facto corporation who have no further allegiance to the Citizens that they purport, to serve.
Failure to reply within the statutory limit of twenty days indicates that you wish to voluntarily waive any statutory exclusions or waivers that you may think you are entitled to.
No Trespassing signs are posted on my property. I have not given any permission for these chemtrails to be sprayed over my home. Biological and chemical sprays are weapons and the Land Use Fee for trespass on my property, with weapons is $1,000,000.00 per day, per incident.
Thanking you in advance for your anticipated cooperation in this matter of great importance to me, I remain,
Very Truly Yours,
Sincerely,
Your Name or alias
a concerned living soul, sovereign and free, born on the land of the County of Dade, State of Florida.

What Do Earwigs Do With Those Pincers Anyway? | Deep Look
Earwigs are equipped with some pretty imposing pincers on their rear, and they're not afraid to use them. But when it comes to these appendages, size isn't everything.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Many animals seem to show a preference for symmetry in a potential mate. It can be a clue that the mate has the genes necessary to develop properly and thrive in an environment full of stresses and dangers.
But in some critters buck the trend. Like the earwig, a diminutive insect found on every continent except Antarctica.
Andrew ZInk, an associate professor of biology at San Francisco State University, has been looking at how symmetry affects earwigs success when it comes to social interactions.
He’s studying maritime earwigs, a larger and more powerful cousin to the common European earwig you might find in your backyard. Both creatures bear fearsome looking pincers on their backsides. And they aren’t afraid to use them to defend themselves. Zink knows all about that.
--- Do earwigs climb into your ear?
The quick answer is no. Earwigs are not interested in climbing into your ear to lay their eggs or otherwise. They’re no more likely than any other bug to accidentally find its way into you ear. The name earwig come from the old english words for ear and insect. It may have been named after the shape of the common European earwig’s wings, which when extended resemble a human ear.
--- Do earwigs pinch people?
Earwigs will use their pincers to defend themselves, but the pinch is typically not strong enough to be considered dangerous.
--- Do earwigs fly?
Male common European earwigs have wings and can fly to disperse and find mates. Females do not have wings or fly. Neither male nor female maritime earwigs have wings or fly.
--- What do earwigs eat?
Most earwigs are scavengers and omnivores. In addition to scavenging and eating plants, the common European earwigs also hunts small prey like aphids. Maritime earwigs are carnivorous hunting smaller arthropods like sand hoppers.
