Napoli Centrale (Naples Central Station) is the main railway station in the city of Naples and in southern Italy and the sixth largest station in Italy in terms of passenger flow with an annual ridership of 50 million. It is located next to Piazza Garibaldi to the east of the old city. It is the primary rail terminus and station for Naples, and serves Trenitalia national railways,EAV and has an underground section known as Stazione di Napoli Piazza Garibaldi (Naples Garibaldi Piazza station), which is served by the metropolitan trains of the line 2.
Transport
The station has 25 tracks. It is connected to Rome by high-speed trains on the Rome–Naples high-speed railway line as well as slower trains on the original Rome–Cassino–Naples line and the Rome–Formia–Naples Direttissima opened in 1927. It is connected to Salerno and southern Italy by the traditional Naples–Salerno line and the recently opened Naples–Salerno high-speed line used by long distance trains.
Toledo Metro Art Station:
Opened in September 2012, the Toledo Metro Station was the 16th station built on Naples Metro Line 1. Set along one of Naples main shopping streets, Via Toledo, a second entrance to the station is expected to open into Naples Spanish Quarter, Quartieri Spagnoli, in February 2013.
Designed by the Spanish Firm Oscar Tusquets Blanca, at 50 meters deep, the station extends below the ground water and is the deepest metro station built on Line 1 to date. One of Metro Napoli’s Metro Art Stations, it was designed around the themes of water and light.
Curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, works of art include two William Kentridge mosaics, designed by the South African artist and realised by Neapolitan craftsmen. In the deepest corridor of the station are Robert Wilson’s Light Panels and works by Achille Cevoli.
Until the inauguration of Stazione Garibaldi which is scheduled for May or June 2013, a Navetta connects passengers with the Dante and the Università stations. At Dante, passengers can change trains and continue towards Piscinola.

THE ART STATIONS OF THE NAPLES METRO

Metro Napoli e Circumvesuviana (RAPID TRANSIT in NAPLES)
Naples is a fascinating city in southern Italy that is superficially decaying, but bustling with life and vitality. This channel is foremost, a railfan channel, so you will see representations of both major transit systems, the city Metro and the regional narrow gauge rapid transit called Circumvesuviana. The Metro opened in 1993 and running second hand early 1980s cars from Rome. The line spirals inside a mountain and has received major investment in making many of its stations artistically appealing. New lines are slowly being constructed. The railway Circumvesuviana is over 100 years old. It was upgraded to rapid transit format with concrete viaducts, electronic fare gates, high platforms and it feeds a center city subway. Sadly a lack of proper funding means the only one or two trains per hour is run on each of the 5 lines (88 route miles). The predominant equipment type dates from the late 1970s and mimics BART in many ways. The sloped front, transverse seating, lightweight construction and non-standard gauge are some common elements.
The graffiti on the Metro is unfortunate, but on the Circumvesuviana I believe it enhances an otherwise stone cold utilitarian environment. The system is in an advanced state of decay and dysfunction. Until they straighten things out, they might as well embrace the graffiti. The system deserves to have a unique identity and one that reflects the chaotic nature of Naples itself. The slant front cars arrived from Ansaldo 1971 - 1979, powered by 1500VDC. Underground - Art in the Metronapoli (Naples)
Complaints abound about the dearth of public support for contemporary art projects, but the Metronapoli had a rare moment of insight with the Neapolitan subway. Besides the lines being plentiful and easy to use, the city commissioned several of the underground stations to be designed by significant architects like Gae Aulenti and Alessandro Mendini, and for those stations to become contemporary art galleries.
