South Korean president to hold summit talks with Russian president in Vladivostok early September
문재인 대통령, 9월 초 러시아 방문, 한-러 정상회담
The presidential Blue House has unveiled the president's international tour schedule for the remainder of this year. First up is a trip to Russia and a bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung has the details.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in will sit down with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Russia in about two weeks time.
Seoul's presidential Blue House unveiled the South Korean leader's overseas trips for the next few months Tuesday... and topping the list: a visit to Russia's Far Eastern city of Vladivostok to attend the Eastern Economic Forum slated for September 6th and 7th.
Although the forum will primarily focus on discovering and developing the economic potentials of Russia's Far East and provide South Korean businesses the chance to explore opportunities there,
President Moon will also take the opportunity to sit down with the Russian president to discuss ways to rein in North Korea as well as Seoul, Moscow economic ties.
(English)
I think in practice, Moon will push President Putin for more active stance on N.Korea but I don’t think he is going to get much. But talks about economic cooperation, it could be far more productive. They can basically have mineral resources, consumption goods, automobile components, and all the other things.
Russia has kept close relations with Pyongyang, alongside China... but recently expressed opposition against the North's latest long-range missile tests... making the passage of a UN Security Council sanctions resolution last month, unanimous.
Next on the president's international trips this year is the Big Apple.
The top office said... President Moon will fly to New York in mid-September to attend the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly where he will give a keynote speech.
The South Korean leader who took office in a snap presidential election in May will wrap up his overseas tours for 2017 with a trip to Vietnam for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit and the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Plus Three in November.
(STAND-UP)
The presidential office says it will be another busy couple of months for President Moon Jae-in as he continues his summit diplomacy on the international stage. What experts are keeping a close eye on, however, is whether Mr. Moon still quite fresh on the job will be able to bring meaningful results from his foreign trips in the remainder of the year.

Becoming a Russian Walrus in KAZAN | Trans-Siberian Railway
In this episode of our Russia travel vlog series riding the Trans Siberian Railway, we arrive in the Capital of Tartarstan, Kazan!
scuba
On this leg of our great trip across Russia, we stop at The Blue Lake, a freezing pit of freshwater. Here, we learn about the famous Russian Walrus, or морж. These legendary beasts are brave men (or women) who polar dip in freezing water. While there is no snow this time of year, this lake is fed from ground water deep in the earth, and is a constant 5C.
After unthawing, we explore Kazan, and try traditional Tartarstan cuisine. This includes Chak-Chak, a famous dessert (so famous that there is a museum... we went.)
We end the day at the Kazan Kremlin, a beautiful complex featuring one of the nicest mosques I've ever seen.
A bit of a background story. This is a train journey of 10,000 km across Russia, the biggest country in the world. 25 days to visit Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, and Vladivostok.

There is a foot bath at the beach. However, its length is about 100 meters. It is said that it is the biggest footbath spa in Japan. Looking at the sea, I was soaking in the warm hot spring, so the fatigue of the trip seemed to be solved.

Vladimir Putin Moscow State University
Vladimir Putin visited the historical building of Moscow State University at Mokhovaya Street ahead of Russian Students Day.
During his visit to the MSU Museum of Anthropology, the President was shown the veil from the reliquary of St Zosima of Solovki (died on April 17, 1478), a co-founder of the Solovetsky Monastery. The image embroidered in gold thread on gold cloth was found in the museum’s collection in 2017 and subsequently restored at the Grabar Art Conservation Centre. According to the centre’s experts, the veil was manufactured at the turn of the 19th century. A similar veil of St Zosima made in 1661 is kept in the collection of the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
Vladimir Putin also met with MSU students, who showed him their designs for a digital culture and education centre for students and for the National Student Theatre Festival. They also told the President about the LANAT School Research Laboratory, which aims to encourage talented children to get involved in research projects.

TOKYO NATIONAL MUSEUM - Kuroda Memorial Hall (2015)
Tokyo National Museum - Kuroda Memorial Hall
Built in 1928 with a bequest left by Western-style painter, Kuroda Seiki(1866-1924), for the use of projects to promote art. In 1930 the Institute of Art Research for the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts was also established here. Artworks from the Hall's collection, including oil paintings and drawings, are exhibited on the 2nd floor.
Refurbished on January 2, 2015.
The Dinosaur in the Classroom
My filmmaking for kids class at the Fletcher Branch Library made this film in about three hours of work. The concept is outwardly like a puppet show, but in fact using this technique allows unlimited storytelling potential, and involves all the same stages as the full scale filmmaking process. It is a great way to teach filmmaking, because the process becomes inexpensive, non-threatening, and downright fun for kids. It uses construction paper, scissors and glue in place of multi-million dollar sets. And besides, construction paper, scissors and glue are my idea of a good time. The two music clips came from freesound org, a great resource for film projects.
SIKHOTE ALIN METEORITE
Sikhote-Alin is an iron meteorite that fell in 1947 on the Sikhote-Alin Mountains in Russia. This fall is among the largest meteorite showers in recent history.
At around 10:30 am on February 12, 1947, eyewitnesses in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains, Primorye, Russia, observed a large bolide brighter than the Sun that came out of the north and descended at an angle of about 41 degrees. The bright flash and the deafening sound of the fall were observed for three hundred kilometres around the point of impact not far from Luchegorsk and approximately 440 km northeast of Vladivostok. A smoke trail, estimated at 32 km long, remained in the sky for several hours.
As the meteorite — travelling at a speed of about 14 km/s — entered the atmosphere, it began to break apart, and the fragments fell together. At an altitude of about 5.6 km, the largest mass apparently broke up in a violent explosion.
Sikhote-Alin is a massive fall. The overall size of the meteoroid has been estimated at just under 900,000 kg. Krinov had estimated the post atmospheric mass of the meteoroid at some 70,000 kg. A more recent estimate by Tsvetkov (and others) puts the mass at around 100,000 kg.

SUMMARY
=======
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (Russian: Республика Саха (Якутия), tr. Respublika Sakha (Yakutiya), IPA: [rʲɪsˈpublʲɪkə sɐˈxa jɪˈkutʲɪjə]; Sakha: Саха Өрөспүүбүлүкэтэ, translit. Sakha Öröspüübülükete, IPA: [saˈxa øɾøsˈpyːbylykete], (Russian: Саха (Якутия); Sakha: Саха Сирэ, translit. Sakha Sire), is a federal Russian republic. It had a population of 958,528 at the 2010 Census, mainly ethnic Yakuts and Russians.
Comprising half the Far Eastern Federal District, it is the largest subnational governing body by area in the world at 3,083,523 square kilometers (1,190,555 sq mi). Its capital is the city of Yakutsk. It is also known for its extreme and severe climate, with the lowest temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere being recorded in Verkhoyansk and Oymyakon, and regular winter averages commonly being below −35 °C (−31 °F) in Yakutsk. The hypercontinental tendencies also result in very warm summers for much of the republic.
Media reports suggest Kim-Putin summit is all about show, not substance
외신 반응, '북-러 정상회담은 내용보다 쇼가 중요하다'
The meeting of the North Korean and Russian leaders has been closely watched by the international media.
We now connect to our Oh Soo-young standing by for us to take a look at some of the reports making the headlines.
Soo-young, what are some global media outlet's take on this landmark exchange?
Well, the headlines show that there's not much need to read between the lines.
Following the first-ever summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladmir Putin,... reports from mostly Western media see the exchange as a move designed to show the U.S. -- that it doesn't get to call the shots on the Korean Peninsula.
CNBC quotes an expert who says Thursday's meeting helps the young dictator demonstrate that he has options apart from Washington, after the summit in Hanoi between Kim and Donald Trump fell through without an agreement.
Japan's Kyodo News also remarked that Kim Jong-un likely wants the Kremlin's backing for its negotiations with the United States on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
To recover from the failure in Hanoi,... the New York Times suggests Kim is seeking to reaffirm his new image among his people as a global player.
And... it seems most news outlets sense Vladmir Putin is also in it for self-interests.
The South China Morning Post says Russia is seeking to raise its regional clout,... and it seems better positioned than China, which is involved in high-stakes trade negotiations with the US,... to endorse Kim’s stance.
Chinese state-media has not actively covered the meeting, other than to simply report that it happened.
It's clear most media outlets weren't expecting much substance from the summit but saw it as a significant move on the diplomatic chessboard. So what move are they anticipating next?
Well, prior to the summit, there was much speculation about the possibility of Kim and Putin discussing economic issues,... such as some easing of sanctions on North Korea as well as trade and cooperation.
The BBC says the summit is also an opportunity for Pyeongyang to show that its economic future does not depend solely on the US.
The UK's Guardian noted that Pyeongyang hopes to procure Russia’s electricity supplies and capital to modernize its outdated industrial plants, railways and other infrastructure,... while Russia would like broader access to the North Korea’s mineral resources.
At the same time, most reports casted doubt on the Kremlin's ability to immediately broaden cooperation with the North,... as it has signed onto UN sanctions against Pyeongyang's nuclear programme.
The Wall Street Journal noted there was no public promise from Moscow of economic assistance to mitigate the pressure of sanctions.
The Associated Press quotes a Moscow-based expert who says Putin will likely encourage Kim to continue constructive talks with the U.S., and that Russia can't be expected to side with the North all the way, ... amid global pressure against the North's nuclear programme.
So according to reports around the world,... it looks like Thursday's meeting has been more significant for optics,... rather than producing a concrete course of action.
