Places to see in ( Rome - Italy ) Santa Maria Sopra Minerva
Santa Maria sopra Minerva is one of the major churches of the Roman Catholic Order of Preachers in Rome, Italy. The church's name derives from the fact that the first Christian church structure on the site was built directly over (Italian: sopra) the ruins or foundations of a temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, which had been erroneously ascribed to the Greco-Roman goddess Minerva.
The church is located in Piazza della Minerva one block behind the Pantheon in the Pigna rione of Rome within the ancient district known as the Campus Martius. The present church and disposition of surrounding structures is visible in a detail from the Nolli Map of 1748.
While many other medieval churches in Rome have been given Baroque makeovers that cover Gothic structures, the Minerva is the only extant example of original Gothic church building in Rome. Behind a restrained Renaissance style façade the Gothic interior features arched vaulting that was painted blue with gilded stars and trimmed with brilliant red ribbing in a 19th-century Neo-Gothic restoration.
The church and adjoining convent served at various times throughout its history as the Dominican Order's headquarters. Today the headquarters have been re-established in their original location at the Roman convent of Santa Sabina. The titulus of Sanctae Mariae supra Minervam is now vacant with the death of Cormac Murphy-O'Connor who died on 1 September 2017.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome
Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome
Basilica, Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. This was not on our list to see in Rome. Santa Maria sopra Minerva is just behind or next to the great Pantheon. Yet glad we came across this Gothic style church, the only such styled church left in Rome today. It, like many Catholic churches, is built on old temples from pagan days. Read more below, but for sure this is a church to check out. The symbols and general condition of the building and interior is amazing. Also, yet another obelisk, one of the 11 in Rome!
“Santa Maria sopra Minerva in English - Saint Mary above Minerva, Latin- Sancta Maria supra Minervam- is one of the major churches of the Roman Catholic Order of Preachers -better known as the Dominicans - at Rome, Italy. The church's name derives from the fact that the first Christian church structure on the site was built directly over - Latin- supra - the ruins or foundations of a temple dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, which had been erroneously ascribed to the Greco-Roman goddess Minerva.”

So they actually misnamed the church after Minerva, when it was really an old pagan site for Isis worshipers. Interesting.
More on the obelisk on an elephant of all things in front of the church, just a stones throw from the side of the amazing Pantheon, which we filmed here -
“The Pulcino della Minerva, the famous elephant sculpture by Bernini and Ercole Ferrata, making the base of one of Rome's eleven Egyptian obelisks.” Source -
Bernini was a master sculpture, the best of his time and came just after Michelangelo.

Italy Travel - Rome, Still Exploring!
A brief stop in Rome, once again. This time we visit some less-known sights including several churches. You don't need to be a Christian, or even religious, to appreciate the marvelous architecture.
Santa Maria sopra Minerva is practically the only surviving Gothic monument in Rome. With it's star-filled ceilings and great art, (Michelangelo created the beautiful sculpture of Christ with the Cross), you can spend an hour in here just to enjoy some peace.
Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martir is an incredible sanctuary designed by Michelangelo himself within ancient Roman ruins - the Baths of Diocletian.
The Papal Basicilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is the original Vatican or church of the Pope. It was built over a Roman temple too, in 432 ad, and the design is based on the Roman Imperial style.
Naturally, we had to visit St Peters once again. Though always impressive we were struck this time by the staged design - - faux-painted marble, over-sized everything, mosaics for paintings (a maintenance consideration). But... there is amazing design work and several authentic art pieces including Bernini's unbelievable high alter piece, and of course, the Pieta by Michelangelo.
Other churches offer the best Baroque architecture in Rome, and unique architectural characteristics.
You'll also find pictures of the Pantheon, (Temple for All Gods), built by the Romans in a Greek style, and considered to be one of the key-stones of architecture.
The Ponte Sant'Angelo is the connection between old Rome and the Vatican and is worth a casual stroll. (The related Castelo Sant'Angelo is shown in other TravelFlix adventures.)
We also visit the Largo di Torre Argentina, (wonderful ruins in the middle of the old district), and a few other sights.
Here are some of the specific details, (not all are shown in this short video):
Campo di Fiori
Undeveloped until 15th century, (flood zone),
