Minimetrò Perugia
MiniMetro is a family of cable propelled automated people mover systems built by Poma/Leitner Group. The vehicles either run on rails or an air cushion and have either a detachable grip (to the cable) or a fixed grip. Leitner has a test track for the vehicles in Sterzing. Current maximum capacity of the system is around 8000 passengers per hour. The latest system installed with the MiniMetro brand was the Cairo Airport People Mover that opened in May 2013.
In Perugia, a 3.2-kilometre (2.0 mi) stretch with seven stations opened in February 2008 to relieve the inner city of car traffic. It consists of more than 25 vehicles of 5 m each, with a capacity of 25 passengers and a speed of up to 25 kilometers (16 mi) per hour. The interval between successive vehicles is around 1,5 minutes. In 2013 the system carried 10,000 passengers per day.Plans exist for a second line.Similar systems are under consideration in Bolzano and Copenhagen.
It runs by cable, from Pian di Massiano on the outskirts -- there's a stadium and a lot of car parking, past the main FS train station at Fontivegge. Then it starts to climb, to Madonna Alta, plunging underground for two stops. The first underground stop is Cupa, which is at the foot of the escalators that descend from Via dei Priori. Then it parallels the Galleria Kennedy, plunging under the very center of down (very deep at this point) to Pincetto, which is adjacent to the covered market (Mercato Coperto). You go up a few escalators and emerge in Piazza Matteoti, which is a block over from the Corso Vannucci. It's easy to use -- there are ticket machines at every station, and they're multilingual. They accept coins, bills, credit cards and ATM cards (bancomat). A single ride costs 1 euro; there are discounts for multiple rides, or you can buy a pass.
Don't forget to hang onto your ticket! While officials might not be necessarily checking tickets, you need your ticket to open the turnstile to get onto the train platform AND again to exit the platform at your destination. The trains are little silver cars and are cute, really. They come every couple of minutes. They're painted bright red inside. The stations themselves are ultramodern and striking, and were designed by the award-winning French architect, Jean Nouvel.
Minimetro Perugia Italien

Minimetro in Perugia (Italy)
Rubber-wheeled, cable-driven transit in Perugia. About seven stations, running from below the train station to one of the highest points in the city. Note that my finger was over the mike on the camera for the first minute or so. It may not make much difference. HD quality with Panasonic Lumix 12 mxp camera. Filmed 20 September 2010 in Perugia at about 2:30 p.m. Central European Summer Time.
