On the Road: Beaver Bay's Second Hand Rose Flea Market
There's a lot to see along Minnesota's north shore of Lake Superior. The 100 miles between Duluth and Grand Marais is among the most picturesque drives in the United States, especially in the fall. But, there is a lot more to see if you stop at a roadside extravaganza just a little east of Beaver Bay.
Digital Tour of Poughkeepsie/ Central Business District 1
Washington Street continues north, while the central business district is to the south.
The Post Office is an important piece of federal architecture. During the administration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the need to put people back to work in the Depression was paramount. FDR created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to do just that, and among many other federally financed projects the WPA constructed new post offices all over the country.
FDR was personally interested in local history. He mandated that each new post office for every community refer to some aspect of the community's local history. In the case of the City of Poughkeepsie, the design of the building was a direct model of the original 18th century Courthouse. It is constructed of local fieldstone and has certain design elements that reflect the Dutch heritage of the region.
The original courthouse was important in the Revolutionary period. It was where legislators from throughout New York State met and decided to become part of the newly independent federation of thirteen states. The debates in the Poughkeepsie courthouse eventually led to the amendments to the U.S. Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights.
The WPA also gave artists meaningful work. Most of the post offices built during this period have murals depicting local history painted on their inside walls. The mural inside the Poughkeepsie post office depicts the early Indian inhabitants and the settlement of the Dutch and then English in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Across the street from the post office on the eastside of Market Street is the Poughkeepsie Journal Building. It was built to emulate the structure of the post office, and essentially what FDR was doing with federal money, they were doing with private money. The Poughkeepsie Journal Building is also in the Dutch Colonial style with rooflines that are very similar to buildings that were built by the Dutch in Albany and New York City during the Dutch period of the early 17th century.
The City Hall is located across from the post office on the westside of Market Street, directly opposite the Poughkeepsie Journal building. It is a mid-20th century structure and was built in a modernist architectural style. Unfortunately, there were lots of problems with the flat roof and construction, as the building was closed for ten years due to water leakage. It is the central building for city services, such as the Mayor's and City Manager's offices, the offices of the Planning and Taxation Departments, and also the central office for the Police Department.
South of City Hall is the Grand Hotel, originally built as a Sheraton Hotel, and attached to it is the Mid-Hudson Civic Center and the McCann Ice Arena. Continuing southward, across the westbound arterial is the current County Courthouse, built on the site of the 18th century courthouse, and the County Office Building. Across from it is the renovated Bardavon Theater, the oldest continuous theater in New York State, and a few banks and financial institutions.
Further south, is the former YMCA Building which now houses the County's Department of Social Services. Because the DSS offices are here in the county seat, all who seek social services, such as welfare, come into the city, thus straining the city's ability to provide necessities such as housing, since the city has a relatively small tax base compared to the rest of the county where many of these residents come from.

While walking through the territory of a factory, located in the industrial area of the city, I noticed a weird concrete block with a metal gate on the side of it. I opened it and a ladder climb later I was in a dark, small tunnel leading to an underground bomb shelter/safe house.

Medieval America 27: Six States from St Louis to Fargo
In this episode of my trip around America I continue my journey north in the center of the country. I traveled into six new states, and cover 1250 miles in the course of eight days traveling ever north from St. Louis Missouri all the way to Fargo North Dakota.
We stop at several castles and a major museum.
With this video and the previous video (episode 26) I went from the New Orleans at the south of America all the way north to Fargo North Dakota bifurcating the country. There was a big swing in temperate and a constant uphill climb. I also noticed now in this video that the terrain is changing there is a lot more open space with enormous open fields and gentle rolling hills, with much fewer trees. It is clear we are heading toward the prairie states.

I traveled five new states over the course of eight days including
Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota
I went into Indiana and spent one night in Indianapolis. After that I moved on to Chicago Illinois
The Bean, Art Institute of Chicago
The Mars Cheese Castle in Wisconsin
Madison Wisconsin: The Morgridge Center Also known as the Red Gym, It was built in 1894 and was used as an armory and gymasium for the University of Wisconsin. It was designed in the Romanesque Revival style.
Then West on Route 18 across part of Iowa which is one of the most beautiful drives I have taken. all the way to Mason city Iowa. A little over 200 miles.
Then North into Minnesota for Minneapolis, St Paul and St cloud for four castles:
The Landmark Center in St Paul- Completed in 1902 it is also in the Romanesque Revival style but notice how different it looks because of the different stone compared to the Red Gym, (This building is pink granite ashlar) It was initially used as the State post office, courthouse and customs house.
The American Swedish Institute (The Swan Turnblad Mansion) It is built in Chateauesque style which is a revival style architecture based onFrench Renaissance Architecture. IT was completed in 1910 and is made of Bedford Limestone. It is also known as the swedish castle.
The Stanford Newel House in St. Paul It The core of the building was built in 1864 by a man named Lasher during the Civil War using locally quarried limestone. It was purchased in 1886 by Stanford Newel and upgraded with the tower and battlements added.
The UMinn NROTC Building - in Minneapolis, it is the University of Minnesota Armory. It was constructed in 1896. It originally served as the University Armory and Gymnasium. Over the years it has served various purposes and now is the home of the University Naval ROTC and gymnasium.
Fergus Falls Minnesota for the Kirkbride Building also known as the Fergus Falls State Mental Health Hospital . It is purported to be haunted. Construction was completed in 1907.
Ending in Fargo North Dakota and Unicorn Park.
Next up I will be traveling west and covering some of the Prairie States.

Historic Downtown Medina, New York
Historic Downtown Medina, New York
Medina, New York is a quaint Victorian village, nestled on a wide bend in the Erie Canal where the canal traverses the Oak Orchard River. Incorporated in 1832, the village thrived and prospered, most significantly in the years following the Civil War.
Being home to many industries- furniture, foundries, and stone quarries, Medina boomed during the Gilded Age. During that boom, numerous impressive buildings appeared, many built of the now famous Medina Sandstone.
Commercial, residential, and ecclesiastical structures born of this great age earned Medina a well-deserved reputation as a beautiful, flourishing community of prospering businesses and grand homes.
Most all of this historic architecture survives today and has been carefully preserved, most notably the collection of downtown commercial architecture. It is the envy of many communities.
It's not a museum or historical facade. Its a living place where you can shop, interact, and feel connected. Few spots offer such an authentic American experience, and the village is increasingly becoming a destination.
An article posted in the Toronto Sun in May 2010 by George Bailey states:
When you walk the historic downtown you can breathe in the smell of history. Their main street echoes of the nineteenth century. Tucked side by side are clusters of aging Medina Sandstone buildings that have changed little since they were constructed during the boom times of the 1830's -1900's.
More on Medina from Bailey at: torontosun.com/2011/04/29/locals-in-medina-ny-say-hello
In a similar article published in the June 2011 edition of Buffalo Spree, writer Bruce Eaton has similar things to say about Medina:
...those who want to spend a few hours soaking up some strong vibes from the Boom Years of Yore are well-advised to head east to the village of Medina. ...With only a few modern buildings in sight, it's possible to stroll up Main towards the canal and imagine that Grover Cleveland still resides in the White House.
Indeed, Grover Cleveland did once stroll these streets. His young bride, Frances Folsom, resided for a time on the north end of Main Street. A historic marker identifies the residence.
The collection of buildings in the Downtown Historic District appear on both the National and New York State Registries of Historic Places. One needs only stand at any place along the wide thoroughfare and see why- a stunning collection of nineteenth century Italianate buildings built of brick and sandstone in a thriving business district. It is truly is a slice of genuine Americana.
Arrayed along the historic thoroughfare are numerous shops and restaurants- everything from antiques to gourmet coffee, gourmet pizza, books, cookies, yarn, candles, gifts, tea shop, fresh produce, and a bistro with a classically trained chef.
Any time of year is a great time to visit this historic village, but fall offers some unique opportunities. While the community can be reached via the usual NYS routes (NYS 90 to Pembroke 48A to Rte. 77 and Rte. 63 to Medina; Rte. 31 straight to Medina; or Rte. 104 to Rte 63, south to Medina), fall foliage along the back roads of Orleans/Niagara offer not only spectacular fall color, but a bounty of fresh fruits (apples!) and vegetables from the farm stands that dot the route.
Google map a scenic route that will take you winding along the Erie Canal to the village and motor along historic West Center Street (Rte. 31E from Middleport, NY) to see a magnificent collection of Victorian homes, or visit the Medina Railroad Museum at and take a fall foliage train ride to the historic museum located adjacent to the Downtown Historic District.

What did the veterans really think about the cause of the American Civil War? Were the reunions all about unification and reconciliation, or were there other stories being told? Find Your Immigrant Ancestors in the New York Passenger Arrival Records
This webinar will provide a brief history of passenger arrival records collected at Ellis Island and the port of New York. and MyHeritage has updated and expanded this index to improve findability in these important immigration records. Until now, no organization has indexed the millions of additional names and relationships listed in the New York passenger arrival records which provide information about the arriving immigrant’s nearest friend or relative in his home country as well as information about a friend or relative in the USA. These additional names and relationships are now available in a searchable index for the first time and can help genealogists find elusive passenger arrival records and solve difficult genealogical problems.
