La prima volta, sebbene dal versante più accessibile, del terribile Monte Zoncolan al Giro d'Italia... Un Giro da ricordare per essere stato l'ultimo corsa del Pirata, che in questa tappa riesce a scaldare i cuori dei sui innumerevoli tifosi. Sempre nei nostri cuori... Die Straße zwischen Ovaro (W) und Sutrio (O) führt direkt über die Kuppe des Monte Zoncolan. Während die Westrampe nur knapp zweispurig (im oberen Abschnitt nur einspurig) ist, durch drei enge Tunnel führt und Steigungen bis zu 20% aufweist, hat man die Ostrampe, die als Zufahrt für das große Skigebiet oberhalb von Sutrio dient, im unteren Bereich sehr großzügig ausgebaut. Die Steigungen erreichen hier maximal 8%, in den Kehren ist die Fahrbahn bis zu zehn Meter breit.
Interessanter ist die alte Trassierung der Ostrampe: Die schmale und kehrenreiche Strecke, die seit dem Herbst 2005 befestigt ist, kann es an Steigung durchaus mit der Westrampe aufnehmen. Sie beginnt in Priola und mündet nach lediglich 5,6 km in die neue Straße ein, welche zur Überwältigung des selben Höhenunterschieds (730 m) ganze 11,2 km benötigt.
An der Scheitelhöhe der Strecke zweigt ein kurzer Stich zur Bergstation eines Lifts ab, wo sich auch eine bewirtschaftete Hütte befindet.
Der Zustand der Tunnelstrecken auf der Westrampe hat sich seit 2006 dank der Giro d’Italia stark verbessert: Der vorher unbefestigte und z.T. tief ausgewaschene Untergrund wurde geglättet und befestigt. Zudem gibt es nun auch eine per Bewegungsmelder aktivierte Beleuchtung.

The direct answer to the Vuelta’s a España’s Alto de l’Angliru, it wasn’t until 2003 that the mighty Monte Zoncolan claimed worldwide notoriety when the Giro d’Italia used it for the first time, although on that occasion it was from the “easier” eastern approach from Sutrio. Four years later and it was back with a vengeance as the race unveiled the 10.2km monster, with ramps up to 22%, from Ovaro. Highly regarded as the toughest climb in Europe by the professionals, Gilberto Simoni summed the climb up perfectly, “It’s like a slow execution, the easiest part of the Zoncolan is harder than the most difficult at the Tour”. Go under an hour from start to finish and you’re on serious fire, to put it in perspective on that day Simoni covered the climb in a mind bending 39 minutes (so obviously not quite as slow an execution for ‘Soignor Zoncolan’ as he was nicknamed after winning twice on the mountain) as it is for the rest of us!
I’ve been fortunate to ride some amazing mountains throughout the world and so far I’ve never come across anything like the Zoncolan, it just keeps going and pushing you, you’re questioning your sanity the whole way up, thinking to yourself ‘why am I doing this?’ And then 400 metres from the top it completely opens up, you see the views behind, there’s mountain peaks, a little bit of baby blue sky and everything makes sense again. Savour every second, the Zoncolan is one of the true greats of cycling!

Il Giro si arrampica per la prima volta sino ai 1730 metri sul livello del mare dello Zoncolan, tosta salita della Carnia che per il suo debutto nella corsa rosa viene proposta dal versante di Sutrio. Sono 13 chilometri e mezzo, gli ultimi 4 mettono a dura prova i ciclisti, soprattutto il chilometro e mezzo finale, nel quale c’è un tratto di 80 metri al 22%. Gilberto Simoni è in rosa con soli 2 secondi di vantaggio su Stefano Garzelli, ma anziché correre in difesa va all’attacco sul suo terreno preferito e arriva solo al traguardo, con 34” sullo stesso Garzelli, 39” su Francesco Casagrande, 42” su Yaroslav Popovych e 43” su Marco Pantani. Il pirata protagonista di una delle ultime fiammate della carriera rimane a lungo insieme a Garzelli cedendo solo negli ultimissimi metri...!!!!

Today starts rather innocently. After leaving Maniago, a small steel town (knives, scissors) in the northeastern part of Italy, there really is nothing too exciting in the first part of the race. Some negligible hills and after about 70 kilometres a false flat. This goes on for the next 20 kilometres, and then we get the first real climb in Ampezzo.
Passo del Pura is located at an altitude of 1,428 metres. The road to the top is narrow with a lot of switchbacks. Over 11.25 kilometres riders gain 869 vertical metres. The average gradient is therefore 7.7 %. We’re just getting started…
Descending 6.5 kilometres the riders reach the valley and the irregular climb to Sella Razzo awaits them – the climb has some flat section. some short downhills so the diesels won’t particularly enjoy this one. It’s 15.85 kilometres to the summit at 1,730 metres. The steepest part of 15% is just before the top, while the average gradient of the climb is a modest 5.2%.
After a long descent of almost 30 kilometres, the mythical mountain awaits the riders. Monte Zoncolan begins in Ovara, this is the toughest side of the mountain. It’s 10.1 kilometres to the top at 1,735 metres with an average gradient of 11.9%, while the steepest bits are up to 22%!

MONTE ARVENIS DALLO ZONCOLAN| Trekking in Friuli Venezia Giulia Ep. 4
Oggi vi porto con me a fare una camminata dalle piste dello Zoncolan, in Friuli Venezia Giulia fino alla croce del monte Arvenis. Da qui dopo aver ammirato il panorama a 360^ raggiungeremo il monte Tamai e Zoncolan.
Una camminata facile ma non semplicissima da trovare senza cartina.
